Replies: 13 11 Nov 10 20:32 tomdeane - In answer to your question I would point to the fact that last year Albertas Run was the top scorer on 130 points, and only appeared in one of top ten lists (as a sub, scoring 98!). Personally I'm inclined to say there are no big prizes for being original, and it is hard enough to just get the 8 or 9 horses on at very least 50 points. I would say this is the key to the competition, and therefore the skill is in working out which big names to omit rather than "dark horses" to include. Monthly prizes on the other hand I think are a different case. This pretty much my approach each year. Of the top ten most obvious/popular, 6, 7 or 8 will hit the target. It's identifying those that may not and having something decent to replace them with that's the key. Of course when I drop a heavy point scorer I'm nowhere, but when I get it right I have a big advantage (if only I can find the right alternative). Then there's always something that will defy logic or is so far under the radar that there's no point in looking (unless you're willing to blow a pile of cash on permutations). Now, how long have I got to change my mind again... |

5 lists, if I come anywhere close to matching last year's 16th placing will be delighted.
I agree with the above, the key is not to stray too far form the obvious, at the same time giving yourself a chance of an obscure big point scorer (Albertas last year, Madison in 08/09 etc). so from 12.01pm, which of your 'darker' horses could win it for you? |

I usually pick the obvious 7 or 8 horses that will be on 25%+ lists, to pick at least one progressive horse that won't be on more then 10% of the lists, and to forgive a name horse from last year who missed the season and might be dismissed to lightly.

Pretty much a neutral result, which is not too bad. I actually prefer that outcome to seeing Dancing Tornado win it (even though we did have DT covered), as it means pretty much everyone is still on a level playing field.

Correct - winner not in the comp. We might have been underweight in our selection of Dancing Tornado relative to the entire population of entries, which would not have been good.

josh isn't in it.....joci probably means he's glad dt never won, because although he may have had it in something....probably only very thinly....and wouldn't make up for the damage done to his other lines.....apologies if i'm wide of the mark though.....i can understand that thinking particularly for those with many entries.

That's exactly my point duffy. We're all still effectively starting from scratch, without any big syndicates stealing a march by having a large smattering of Dancing Tornado amongst their lists (had he won).

Solwhit will be up there too....runs more than Hurricane Fly, and running in Morgiana, and amongst favourites for Irish Champion Hurdle. The fact that HF wasn't ready for the Morgiana might have put a few off him.
