He is cantering - although at a crawl at the moment - but odds are for him making the race now
By:
Bobby are you keen on NTD constantly talking up his chances of making the race? You seem to be far more cautious?!
By:
Meat Loaf - It was a bad cut, it has healed well and he should be back in work on Monday. What we don't yet know is how much of the edge the break has taken off him. We have some options for a race course gallop, and the plan was never to have him 100% before March, but he won't go unless he is fit enough to do himself justice and he hasn't done enough on the gallops to tell us exactly where we are yet.
By:
Sorry should have added - I cannot knock NTD for his enthusiam, why would you not get excited at the thought of turning out a GC winner if you are a trainer. I temper mine with a little caution, thats all

Thanks Bobby for your honesty as usual. It really is a rare commodity these days!
I have followed Imperial Commander from his early days when Twiston had 3 good novice hurdlers in IC, Battlecry and Carlitos. Is Carlitos still in training with Twiston? Its was a real shame that he picked up a bad injury a few years ago. I can't see Kauto or Denman beating IC round Cheltenham. The only two i would flag up would be Joncol and Money Trix (if soft ground). Thanks again. |
By:
Meat Loaf - Carlitos is still there, if he can ever get back to the track he is well handicapped.
Personally I cannot see how Joncol could turn up and jump round Cheltenham at Gold Cup speed first time up at the track, to me his size and co-ordination suggest he is always going to be better on a flat track. Money Trix has a lot to prove on form. Diamond Harry and Burton Port are the only two novices to have enhanced their cv's so far this season - the main opposition remains KS and Denman IMHO. But to be honest we just concentrate on getting IC as fit as we can get him, because at his best he is difficult to bear around Prestbury Park. |
By:
I can't see anything coming out the woodwork for the Gold Cup. Imperial Commander has the measure of the best chasers around at Cheltenham no question. Diamond Harry looked classy off a light weight in the Hennessy but I reckon he needs to find another stone and a half to trouble IC and put a really poor display in the RSA behind him. Good trainer though. Burton Port has improvement in him I think but the way they rode him as a novice and Barry's one, two, three - jump negotiation of the Chepstow fences doesn't inspire confidence at the highest level. Having said that I'm sure a former GC winner needed similar coaching over the fences. Could have been Master Oats who could do ten miles on heavy and the ground came good for him.

Hi Bobby,
Hope you are well. Just a quick Q. Imperial is a lovely stamp of a horse, and his head carriage is a treasure for me. I have to say, personally I think he'd look even more handsome with a mane and tail (I think v few horses look good 'done up'). This is a question about the process behind his presentation at the track, not a request for a mane and tail, but have you ever given consideration to abandoning the bobbles and tail, and what are your views on the matter generally? Before my fellow Forumites laugh at my question and/or think I have been drinking (I haven't!), I am being serious! I think it was Daryl Holland that used to quite ofren remove bobbles from a mane when loading, and I always appreciated it! Thanks, RC. |
By:
Hi R Carver - To be fair that is about the only aspect I don't interfere with - Jo Collinson is in charge of race presentation, as it has seemed to work so far I cannot see any reason to change it. I think when you watch the close ups a flowing mane and tail always look great - but if Jo prefers bobbles then bobbles it is
By:
Hi Bobby can you ask Jo to give IC go-faster stripes for the King George? Cheers.
By:
After consulting with the vet and trainer I am afraid the wound has not healed in time, so regrettably we will not be appearing in the King George at Kempton. He will now be targeted at Cheltenham in March. He will be scratched tomorrow and the trainer will make the announcement at lunchtime.
By:
unlcuky Bobby. Goodluck for March and hope he is A1 by then.
By:
Thanks for replying Bobby. IC always looks great and horses not done up are my pref, so was just wondering about the process. Thanks for the reply.
Very sad he will not be running on the 26th, I fell gutted, so you all must feel 10x worse. I'm sure you will select the right replacement and GL. RC. |
By:
Hard lines bob, we'll have to wait another year to see if he can handle Kempton when fit and well. Somehow can't see Kauto being in the way in a year's time. Sure you'll be feeling much better at around 4pm on Friday 18th March.
Re. earlier post on Burton Port's suspect jumping ability I meant Newbury not Chepstow (Welsh National on the brain). |
By:
Bad luck Bobby.
Would you not consider the Pillar Chase (or whatever it is called these days)? I know IC goes well fresh but it is still a big ask to win the Gold Cup after being off the track for the best part of 4 months. |
By:
Not a problem at the NTD yard. You probably wouldn't want the ground to come up heavy though. That's as rare as hens' teeth in March these days
By:
Like Nigel's ackertack today. Stood out for me at the stable visit bobby kindly organised and interesting Paddy swaps horse from horse that ran very well last time.
By:
Frontier Dancer out today, good luck
By:
Alex - he will need it, won't get the trip im my view and is up against stiff oppostion in any event. Definitive Edge at Clonmel has a realistic chance.
By:
You were right about FD and wrong about the irish horse by the looks of things... whats the long term plan for FD? Will he make it to the top like IC?
By:
I think it's quite easy to say no, Frontier Dancer will not be winning a Gold Cup. Or a grade 1 for that matter.
By:
I clearly didnt mean a Gold Cup, o mention a grade 1... i also believe i was also asking Bobby. thanks
By:
What does will he make it to the top like IC mean then please? The horse is clearly stones below IC; and BD has already indicated that its fate rests with handicaps. So Im struggling to understand why you answered CVB in the way you did. Indication of what is wrong with these forums nowadays.
By:
OTT Manyana.
By:
Alex / CVB - Definitive Edge finsihed distressed, pilot said he never travelled and made a noise so investigations are underway. CVB's assessment of FD is fairly accurate, he needs better ground, a shorter trip and softer opposition - capable of winning some decent pots if well placed but will ultimately be a 135 - 145 chaser. Still not many of them around though !
By:
thanks bobby
By:
and not to distract from the thread, what is wrong with the forum is the arrogant tone of certain regular posters replies to newer members who dont crawl up their a***/ start monotonous threads with no real info except draggin up the same old arguments. FD was quoted in the novice chases at chelts, and without seeing the horse run i wouldnt know how good the horse is as results dont always tell the full tale, hence i was asking bobby. thanks
By:
I think you're getting the wrong impression from my post mate. I was just trying to give a fair opinion on the horse. It's quite easy to tell when then gulf in class is that big as it is between a truly exceptional horse like Imperial Commander and a handicapper like Frontier Dancer. Grade 1 winning horses are rare in this game.
By:
Dont want to get dragged into a slagging match on here, but AM , the arrogance appears to rest in your corner. I dont know CVB, but I cannot see or understand your replies to his posts. I have followed FD since it first ran in a bumper and despite Bobby enthusiasm, it will struggle to make the grade, but I hope Im wrong for its owners sake.
By:
Manyana - as an owner I am sure many would be happy with FD who will end up north of 140 as a chaser - they are not all Gold Cup winners ! Given better ground, a more suitable trip, and experience jumping at speed he will land a valuable prize or two, and off 128 (or less if we get a few lbs back he will be well handicapped).
By:
BD - yes I would gladly own him - just trying to bring a realistic view - not all horses are superstars. My main issue is that when people make a comment on their views on an open forum , others are too quick to ridicule or 'jump' on others. CVB had a view, so do you, so do I. A forum should be used for an exchange of views, and not a place where people get jumped on just becuase they state what theirs is. I hope IC recovers quickly to retain last years crown, as in my view, it still hasnt received the plaudits it deserves. I have read in RP from several authors that it only performs at Cheltenham; which to me is nonsense, but is also like saying an athlete only performs well when winning an olympic gold..
By:
it wasnt the content of the post that upset me, just seemed to have an arrogant undertone i didnt like... over it now, move on pls

By:
Bobby - is there any news on Roll Along? Thanks in advance.

Hi Bobby, how do the stable think Khyber Kim will run in the Xmas Hurdle? With Overturn setting a strong gallop I can see Khyber coming from off the pace and storming up the straight. Can't imagine Starluck would have had the necessary work into him at Alan Fleming's in the big freeze and just can't have Binocular at this time of year after the last two Fighting Fifths and his awful run in this last year. What do you reckon BD?
By:
TC, I'm keen on Khyber Kim in the Christmas Hurdle too.
Alan Lee was very bullish about him on ATR on Sunday. |
By:
I love Khyber Kim and was confident about his chance in the Champion Hurdle last season, but I can't help thinking Kempton is a peculiar venue for him to start this season. I've no idea if he will be suited by the track and I've always found the Christmas Hurdle a bit of a trappy race anyway. That's undoubtedly clouding my thinking and as I don't know which Binocular will turn up I'm happy to sit it out. The trainer's obviously happy to meet Binocular again with a fresh horse but that just makes me wonder why he didn't do it at Newcastle. He won the Bula last year so that was also an alternative and an easier one on paper than this. Just makes me wonder if the horse experienced a setback since his last race.
By:
I don't think Kempton will be an issue, my only concern is that he is having a lot of work thrown at him in a short space of time to get him there. That said he looked superb when I saw him on the gallops a fortnight ago, and is still working really well. I would expect a bold show.
