These certainly are exciting times for the O’Flynn kennels in Tullaroan. On Saturday night they toasted classic glory as Milldean Tally won the Sporting Press Irish Oaks at Shelbourne.
Then next Saturday the kennel “star” Milldean Panther (pic right) will take his first comeback step when he has a trial at the same venue.
Despite it all, John O’Flynn Snr was as cool as a cucumber when I spoke with him yesterday and he outlined the future plans for the kennel’s superstars.
“I honestly don’t know what we are doing with the bitch. We are still savouring our sin on Saturday. She ran so well and now she’s going to have a break as she has been on the go for eight weeks.
“To be honest I’d be half tempted not to race her again but I know the owners will want her to race and I suppose we will have to consider the Derby. After that I don’t know but the Night of Stars Bitch race at the end of the year would have to be in our minds with the huge money on offer”.
While Tally is having a few quiet weeks and basking in her new role of “Queen of the Track”, her illustrious kennel companion Milldean Panther is reported ready for a return to the track.
He hasn’t raced since April 21st when he won the Formula One Grand Prix final at Curraheen Park in 28.24 after walking out of traps and giving all his rivals a big start. He has since been treated for a back problem but O’Flynn Snr reports that he is in “great form and ready to go. We plan to give him a trial on Saturday night and if everything goes right there, which it should, we will then give him a trial around Dundalk in preparation for the **** International. That would set him up nicely for the Irish Derby”.
Meanwhile, John Jnr can celebrate his new status as a classic winning trainer. He has done a mighty job with his bitch which was originally bought as a potential stayer after some fine performances around Harold’s Cross when known as Tallys Girl. I have little doubt that she could be a huge player over longer distances but I doubt if we will see her in that role.

Phil Gough yesterday reported that Sparta Maestro was slightly the worse for wear following his surprise exit from the ECC Timber 550 at Shelbourne on Saturday.
However the encouraging news is that he expects the dog to be back in full fitness within two weeks.
Speaking yesterday morning, Gough said: “I knew there was something amiss when he took a step to the inside on breaking and he never really strode out properly. It was very obvious on Sunday morning that he was sore on a foot. He has a couple of minor problems but the major one is a sore pad on his foot. It was as if he had stepped on a stone and it was very sore but it should be okay in a week”.
The plan is now to give him two weeks off to allow him recover fully and then the Puppy Derby champion will bid for the Townviewfoods.com Champion Stakes at Shelbourne which is due to commence on Saturday, July 14th.

Really is a pity that Ladbrokes continue their association with the event.

They do absolutely nothing for greyhound racing in Ireland and have zero interest in pricing other events throughout the year, or offering any prices on a Saturday night.

It's highly possible that Shelbourne are really stuck for sponsors, but having these charlatans sponsoring the main event in the calendar is very disappointing.

His best piece of Shelbourne form is beating Tyrur Lanney 2L when leading, i'd ignore everything that happened in Drumbo as regards our Derby

Sure go for it, don't mind me i'm just thinking out loud Laugh

If it's in there the trainer will get it out of him anyway, i just don't trust any Drumbo form at all as some dogs runs it and a lot of others seem to hate the place.

Irishone would wait to be honest until all price up - someone would go 100s I would think, fast dog yes but to win the Derby? No doubt if I rang Laddys for a price for Skywalker Puma it would be cut....(cant see too much value at the minute IMHO)

They have layed the red carpet out in the past, when Rapid Ranger ran in the Irish Derby he was stranded in Holyhead as the ferry before theirs was cancelled and they couldn't get a place on the one they had booked. Shelbourne got in contact with the ferry to let them on and then they got a police escort to Shelbourne from the ferry to ensure they made it on time.

Anyway i don't see why they should lay out the red carpet to English challengers really. Yes it is great when they come over and it adds to the competition but if they don't want to come so be it, the show goes on and it is still the best greyhound race in the world in my opinion.

Where is the value in the market now? Here is my views anyway.

Sparta Maestro @ 10/1 (I still think he deserves to be favourite despite Saturday nights flat run where he was found to be sore on his foot. Before that run he had never been out of the first 3. He runs Shelbourne brilliantly and can do it from the front or from behind. Of the market leaders he is the one i prefer at the prices.)

Razldazl Will @ 25/1 (Bigger on here. I have actually been disappointed with him this year but he just keeps making finals so in terms of an ante post bet he seems a reasonable price for that reason. The only competition he has entered that he did not make the final was the Gold Cup where he got bad trouble but he has made the National Puppy Stake, Easter Cup, Betfair 600 and ECC Timber finals all at Shelbourne and it is not hard to imagine him making the Derby Final too.)

Skywalker Puma @ 40/1 (He did a stunning run at Kilkenny last Friday night and has already shown what he can do at Shelbourne and the step up to 550y looks sure to suit. In fact watch the Larry Dunne final that Sparta Maestro won and Skywalker Puma was absolutely flying into the 3rd bend where he got no run and i wonder what the result would have been had he got through there. He has massive pace and stays well and should be tough to knock out.)

Power Of God @ 50/1 (Won the Produce Stakes at Clonmel but i don't think that track suited him the best and he did well to win in the circumstances. At Shelbourne he has already clocked 28.44 (twice) and he runs in the Race Of Champions at Tralee Saturday night where he was only beat a SH by Razldazl Rioga in the semi finals. The only worry i have with him is the draw, he is mad for the rails so the draws will be crucial for him.)

Camas @ 66/1 (A Produce Stakes finalist behind Power Of God and he runs in the ECC Timber final on Saturday night at Shelbourne. This lad is a proper (w) seed and a proper wide runner. Since coming to Shelbourne he seems to have improved his trapping and he has fine all round pace. If he keeps drawing the outside box he should avoid all problems and is one who could go deep in the comp.)

Cashen Mafuma @ 66/1 (Another Produce Stakes finalist and he looked unlucky in last weeks semi final of the Race Of Champions. His form down the country is very good and he can do it both ways. The last time he ran in Shelbourne over 525y he was pretty unlucky in losing 1/2L to Dear Pa and the extra distance should prove to be no problem. He was naughty after the line that night so probably has a kink but if reproducing the form he shows in CML, LMK and TRL the price would be too big.)

Captain America @ 100/1 (Made the semi final of the Produce Stakes but it was in the 1/4 final where he really looked on the up. That night he drew trap 6 (unseeded) and he made his best start and it really seemed to suit. He was then knocked out in the semi final but returned on finals night to win in 29.79 over 550y from 6 this time seeded (w). He then went around Newbridge in a trial in early May in 28.46 but has not been seen since. I just hope everything is ok with him but the improvement he showed during the Produce Stakes was excellent and if he can show that around Shelbourne i think he could do a lot better than those odds suggest.)

I thought Tyrur Sugar Ray was a good price @ 33/1 but his last 2 runs have left given me more questions than answers. He clearly has the pace to figure in the Derby and things didn't go perfect for him in those races. Maybe i'm being a bit rash as he is very inexperienced. Like Power Of God he is another who wants to be drawn rails as so far he turns left from boxes but maybe with experience he may learn to hold his line run up.

i remember saying to you pf i wanted a 100/1+ winner this year.  I just didnt want it to be snapper. Sad NOt sure it could have gone any worse after the semi final draw and following events Sad

there never seems to be as much interest on here for this derby??  i take 1000's on the english, lucky to take a few on the irish.  But when the site wont add some dogs and say they have more than enough for the time being Laugh you can sort of understand why i suppose.

myself...not really come to terms with the irish either hence the smaller book for me here and the terrible % at the moment.  (been too busy to do some proper research and get a better idea)  hence just copying the books for now. Sad
