Marcus Fraser narrowly missed out on claiming his first win since 2010 at the Thailand Golf Championship on Sunday, but his disappointment was largely offset by the knowledge that he had qualified for The Open at St Andrews next year.
The Australian, who finished tied second alongside Martin Kaymer, a shot behind winner Lee Westwood, earned one of four places in the game’s oldest Major that were up for grabs at the Thailand Golf Championship, which forms part of the Open Qualifying Series.
“That’s why I came up here – to try and get one of those spots at The Open at St Andrews next year, so it’s great, I’m excited,” said Fraser, who bogeyed Amata Spring Country Club’s demanding 18th hole to miss the opportunity of forcing a play-off with Englishman Westwood.
Fraser’s fellow countryman Scott Hend (fifth), India’s Anirban Lahiri and Jonathan Moore of the United States (tied sixth) were the other non-exempt players to earn their places in the field at the Home of Golf in 2015.

Wee Rory eyes two more majors victories in 2015. The career Grand Slam may have eluded Rory this year, but McIlroy still has his sights set on adding to his major haul.
McIlroy is in England this week to defend his title at the BMW PGA Championship, a victory that sparked a run of seven worldwide wins in the last 12 months. That tally includes a seven-shot win last week at Quail Hollow and it also includes a pair of major titles - a feat McIlroy hopes to repeat this summer. "There's three majors left and I feel like two of those major venues are going to set up really well with me, at St. Andrews and Whistling Straits," McIlroy told Sky Sports. The confidence isn't surprising considering McIlroy's current form and his past success at both venues. He tied for third at the 2010 Open Championship at St. Andrews, where he opened with a 63 and rallied after a second-round 80. He also finished T-3 at the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, one shot out of a playoff between Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer. The next major on the calendar, though, is the U.S. Open, where an untested venue has dampened his expectations - for now. "Chambers Bay is a bit of an unknown at the U.S. Open in a few weeks, so (I've) got two great opportunities to add to the major tally," he said. "Got a lot of other great opportunities just to get more wins, and even try to increase my lead in the world ranking. There's a lot to play for this year." |

Three players, who are not already exempt and who finish in the top ten at The Mizuno Open in Japan AND The Irish Open Hosted by The Rory Foundation, will secure places in The Open Championship at St Andrews from 16-19 July. In the event of a tie, the qualifying place(s) will go to the player with the highest ranking in the Official World Golf Ranking at the start of that week. |

English pair Tyrrell Hatton and Eddie Pepperell along with Denmark's Søren Kjeldsen earned exemptions into The Open Championship with their high finishes at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.
With a two-stroke victory at the Mizuno Open, Taichi Teshima earned an exemption into The Open Championship. at JFE Setonaikai Golf Club in Okayama. The event doubled as Japan's Open Qualifying Series for the season's third major. Teshimi is 0-for-2 in the major (2001, 2002). The top four punched tickets to St. Andrews. Scott Strange finished alone in second place. In his only previous appearance in The Open, the Aussie missed the cut in 2008. Shinji Tomimura and Tadahiro Takayama shared third place four swings in arrears to gobble up the other two berths into the field of 156 at St. Andrews. Tomimura has never played in any major while Takayama is 1-for-3 at The Open with a T23 at St. Andrews in 2005. |

Players on the PGA TOUR have the chance to qualify at three events: Travelers Championship, The Greenbrier Classic and John Deere Classic.
The top four players, not previously eligible, who finish among the top 12 (and ties) at the Travelers Championship and The Greenbrier Classic will earn entry into The Open Championship. The top player among the top five (and ties) at the John Deere Classic will also qualify. |

Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Alex Noren have qualified for The Open Championship because they sit inside the top 20 of the Race to Dubai standings at the conclusion of the BMW International Open. The top five and ties inside the top 20 of the R2D are exempt into the season's third major, but the other 18 had already gained entry.

Aphibarnrat finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in Munich and sits 13th in the RtoD. Aphibarnrat will be making his third consecutive start in this Major where he's 0-for-2. Nicknamed ‘Asia’s John Daly’ for his burly frame and go-for-broke style of play, he won his age group at the Junior World Golf Championships in 2003 and 2004 - and not to be confused with the other Thai with a burly physique, Prom Meesawat - The ‘Big Dolphin’.
Kiradech OWGR #86 won the 2015 Shenzhen International following a T4 finish in the True or False Thailand Classic. The Thai was the 2013 Maybank Malaysian Open winner in Kuala Lumpur G&CC as a 23yo - big guy with a big reputation in KL - where he was also third in 2010 and third in CIMB Classic in 2013. The 25 year old has had a tough time since winning in Malaysia - “I've been struggling for a year. I lost my coach (Natpasit Chokthanasart, who died in December 2013), changed my equipment. It's a big changing time after I won. It's been like that for a while. I haven't been at the top of the leaderboard but finally I had the chance to do it. It was tough to stay there.” - after he won the Shenzhen back in April. The BURLY THAI deserves another green curry tonite after qualifying for The OPEN. Noren was 14th in R2D to comfortably qualify (took this week off). It will be the Swede's sixth appearance in The OPEN. In his only other try at St. Andrews, he missed the cut in 2010. |

The Silver Medal awarded to the leading amateur of an Open Championship on a Sunday is one of the most coveted and treasured of trophies.
The medal has been played for since 1949 and was won four times in the first five years by Frank Stranahan, of the United States. Since then only three players have won it twice: Joe Carr, Sir Michael Bonallack and Peter McEvoy. Interestingly, only two of the 42 players to have won the Silver Medal later captured the Open Championship itself: Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Since 1981, however, five have gone on to become Major Champions. In order: Hal Sutton, Jose Maria Olazabal, Woods, Justin Rose and McIlroy. This year’s Open marks the 30th anniversary of Olazabal’s Silver Medal winning performance at Royal St George’s in 1985. At just 19, Olazabal looked every inch the next great thing from Spain. And so it proved. A year earlier, he had won the Amateur Championship at Formby, beating Colin Montgomerie 5&4 in the final, and brought to the table a supreme long-iron game and a form of wizardry around the greens that seemed to come straight out of the Severiano Ballesteros training manual. Olazabal, widely regarded as one of the game’s true gentlemen, turned professional in 1986 and promptly finished second on the European Tour’s Order of Merit. He won the Masters in 1994 and again in 1999 after returning from a debilitating foot injury that had threatened to end his career. He played in seven Ryder Cup matches, formed the most successful pairing in the history of the competition with Ballesteros, and went on to captain the winning Europe team at Medinah, Chicago, in 2012. At the Gailes Links qualifier Mark Young was the lading qualifier while Ryan Fox and amateur Paul Kinnear moved on to St. Andrews after a 3-man play-off with Rhys Davies.
Benjamim Ben Taylor, who holed the clinching putt for LSU at the NCAA Championship, was one of 12 players who qualified for The OPEN today. Taylor, whose par putt on the final green gave LSU a 4-1 victory over Southern Cal on June 3, shot 5-under 137 to share medalist honors with amateur Alister Balcombe & Gary Boyd at Royal Cinque Ports. Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen was one of the three qualifiers at Woburn (only after a 3-man play-off), along with amateur Paul Dunne, who recently completed his college career at UAB, and Robert Dinwiddie. Goosen, who finished fourth at last week’s BMW International Open on the European Tour, hasn’t played in the Open since 2012. Jordan Niebrugge, a senior at Oklahoma State and a member of the 2013 U.S. Walker Cup team, shared the top spot at the Hillside qualifier (3 under), along with Scott Arnold and Pelle Edberg. In all, five of the 12 spots went to amateurs. |

Danny Lee, David Hearn, James Hahn & Greg Owen are through to The OPEN after the Greenbrier Classic, while James Morrison, Jaco Van Zyl & Rafa Cabrera-Bello have qualified from Paris.
Lee earned his first victory on the PGA TOUR following a two-hole play-off with Hearn after the pair finished tied on 13-under-par alongside Americans Robert Streb and Kevin Kisner, who were both already exempt for The Open and bowed out after the first play-off hole. New Zealander Lee carded a three-under-par 67 to close out the tournament and is set to make his first appearance. The 24-year-old is a former US Amateur champion and was the recipient of the Mark H McCormack medal as the top player in the WORLD AMATEUR GOLF RANKING™ in 2008. |
