Russell Knox will make his Open debut following the withdrawal of injured defending champion Rory McIlroy.
The 30-year-old Scot was first reserve for St Andrews and learned of his inclusion while playing in the Pro-Am at Gullane ahead of the Scottish Open. "My wife sent me a text out on the course saying that Rory had withdrawn," said the world number 77. "Nobody wants to gain because another player is injured, so it is a horrible way to sneak in but I am very happy." McIlroy will not compete for the Claret Jug at St Andrews after he ruptured ankle ligaments playing football with friends. After getting the message from his wife, Knox had to wait a little longer for official confirmation. "My manager received an email from the R&A to say 100% I am into the Open," he said. bbc.co.uk |

Although exempt into next week's OPEN since 1st July, 39yo Tim Clark isn't confident that he'll be able to compete due to a delay in obtaining a visa ! The long and short of it is that Tim's request for assistance from the R&A some weeks ago was ignored until he actually qualified for the tournament. 'Some sensitive laws' regarding international travel may now prevent him from getting clearance to get to Scotland in time for his opening round on 16th July. Anyways, the South African 500/1 made only 3 cuts from 9 goes with just one T40 in this Major. His best finish happened to be at St. Andrews, but he was on fire that summer and finished with sixteen T25's in 26 starts, back in '05. Clark is currently -2 (on the cut line) after Rd.1 at TPC Deere Run.
"They were able to keep women out of their club for 200 years," Clark quipped, "but they can’t help one guy get into their tournament." - not a happy camper ![]() |

Chris broke his right hand on Friday, playing with one of his sons on the family farm - Tim Rosaforte, Golf Channel. The 30-year-old Kirk, winner of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial CC in May - I backed him there along with Alberto Contador for the Giro as he doesn't rely on distance or scoring on par 5s "so short par 70 tracks are right up his alley".
Chris #19 OWGR went cold in February and March but has three T10 finishes this season and was scheduled to make his second OPEN appearance, having finished T19 in his 2014 debut. He finished 75th at the US Open in his latest start. |

That was Kirk's fourth PGA TOUR title and SUPERMAN SPIETH was T2 just a shot behind.

The eagle has landed. Tiger Woods is at St. Andrews, where he has won two of the past three British Opens played there. Woods played a few holes with some junior golfers as part of a Nike-sponsored function. His swing looks ... full.
Woods told ESPN after playing around a bit on Saturday that the Old Course was playing slower and softer than he'd ever seen it before. "I was shocked," Woods said. "I had seen photos of it a month ago. It was bone dry. It looked like it was going to be one of those dust bowls again; hard, fast, like the years I've played St. Andrews. It's changed. They got big rain and a lot of sun. It's totally changed. "I'm going to have to do a little bit of feel around the greens, my putting. I wasn't expecting the firmness to be that soft. We made ball marks on the greens. I don't ever remember making ball marks around this place." You know who that might have helped? The man who won't be playing this week. |

What do people think of Spieth at St Andrews? Has the game for all courses, don't think a lack of links experience will hurt. Read an article saying that there will be many pin positions that can't really be gotten to, so there will be a lot of mid range putts and no one is better in the 20-30 foot range.
|
|
By:
its nearly always the case at st andrews rhino,
the course is softer though, so some of the greens wont have places to hide a pin |
|
By:
Target golf suits him as well Donny. I'm thinking when they head to Whistling Straits all the talk will be on whether he can seal the deal on the grand slam. Easy to get carried away but I think what he is doing in the US this week on the back of the US Open is incredible.
Best young athlete on the planet, can't think of another in any sport reaching his heights. |

The top three to qualify from Gullane are T2 Frenchman Raphaël Jacquelin securing his 10th appearance in The OPEN, Daniel Brooks who led after 36 & 54 holes but faded to finish T7 and along with T10 Rikard Karlberg #338 OWGR (in a tiebreaker with YE Yang #413 OWGR), both earned their first start at The OPEN.
The final tee time at St. Andrews on Thursday will go to the highest finisher inside the top five and ties, not otherwise exempt, at the John Deere tonite. There are already 13 players at the John Deere booked on that flight to Scotland tonite. |

South African Tim Clark as anticipated has withdrawn - visa problems no doubt - OR maybe the Airlines think like the R&A and class that 'anchor putter' as a weapon - expect a ban anytime soon.
