Someone was asking why Noh was not playing.Just read he has turned down the option of being 1st reserve ,Ben Crane flew over today to take his chance at getting in.Hope he gets in ,can't understand why a young player like Noh would not take a chance and fly over.

My point is that Noh should be in at the start since he won a tournament. I do believe any winner should have automatic qualification. It's unfair that winners from the last few tournaments get a place and not those from 2 to 6 months ago.

i fall into the hole of watching numbers move on a screen instead of watching the flippin sport

I agree.

Occasionally the fun is when the odds dropped really low on Sunday then go back up straight away......the TV will show the ball going almost into the hole then spins round the lip of the hole and doesn't go in.LaughLaughLaugh

Agreed ski.......i have had many a Major killed by the fact that i "know" what happens before it happens....from a punting point of view you have to have the machine on but it does massively take away from the drama, win or lose.

I  tried to watch the Masters with the machine off, but being on Blixt and speith i had to have it on especially when JS went 2 clear.....fooked it for me after that and wish i had just watched the box and died a slow death rather than knowing my fate before the gun was loaded Sad

The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool

There are few finer sights in golf than the best players in the world battling it out on the great links courses of Britain & Ireland and this year is no different as we return to the classic Hoylake course at Royal Liverpool where the game’s elite are aiming to lift the greatest prize in the sport: The Claret Jug.  With conditions set fair for the week following a dry and sunny build-up the course is playing firm and fast, ideal for links golf. 2011 Champion Darren Clarke has described it as  “pure links” so we are set for a dramatic and exciting week. The challenge of links golf is one of the oldest yet most difficult to master: the imagination and creativity to play shots from unique positions, the ability to hit the ball low under the wind and control it and a tremendous short game are three key ingredients when looking for a potential winner.

2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell has everything you could want in a potential Open Champion and looks primed for a massive week. He is in fantastic form having just successfully defended his Open de France title at the tough Golf National course in Paris and ranks 1st in putting on the Official PGA Tour Stats. Add that to his brilliant driving and iron skills and you can see why he was 5th in the 2012 edition and maybe should have won. The Northern Ireland man is no stranger to the unique demands of links golf, being born and bred in Portrush and he will surely fancy his chances of adding a second Major to his collection. Take the 33/1 with Ladbrokes.

American Rickie Fowler has long been touted as golf’s next big thing and these past few months have seen him string some very impressive performances together on some of the world’s toughest courses. Under long-time coach Barry McConnell Fowler developed an appreciation and love of links golf which shows through in his brief yet already impressive Open Championship record: 14/5/31 in his first 3 appearances from 2010-2012. His performances in this season’s first two Major’s were outstanding: 5th in The Masters and 2nd at The US Open. He warmed up nicely for this week’s challenge with a fine 8th place at The Scottish Open, closing with an eyecatching 65 on Sunday and he will be full of confidence in his search for a first Major Trophy. Bet365 & Paddy Power are both paying 7 places each way so the 40/1 should be taken.

The European challenge looks particularly strong this year and I have 3 great value selections to complete the staking plan. Many will no doubt fancy Justin Rose to add to last year’s maiden Major triumph at the US Open and with victories in his last two tournaments his confidence will be sky high. He looks sure to go close but at 14/1 the value has long gone. Instead, at almost 5 times the price, why not have an interest in Welshman Jamie Donaldson. This has truly been a breakthrough season for Donaldson, so long a nearly man on the European Tour. Having finally broken his European Tour duck on the legendary links of Royal Portrush by winning the Irish Open he followed that up last year with victory in Abu Dhabi. That second victory has propelled him to a new level and a series of outstanding performances have followed this season, most notably 14th at The Masters and 2nd at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. The 66/1 on offer looks like tremendous value, especially with Betfair Sportsbook’s generous offer of 8 places each way. The flying Finn Mikko Ilonen has long looked the type to make a big impact at an Open Championship and this looks like his best chance yet. After several years ravaged by injury he has roared back with a vengeance, winning last month’s Irish Open to follow on from 2013′s Nordea Masters triumph. The icing on the cake is his outstanding record here at Hoylake: Amateur Champion in 2000 and 16th in the 2006 Open Championship itself. Most of the fancy prices have dispappeared but the 80/1, again with Betfair Sportsbook, still looks like excellent each way value. We complete our selections with the Great Dane Thomas Bjorn, who in the twilight of his career is playing some of his best ever golf. A  master of the links, he has compiled an enviable record in The Open Championship with finishes of 4th, 8th, 9th and  twice a runner-up, including his infamous and heartbreaking capitulation to Ben Curtis in 2003. He has won five titles in the past four years and went close in The Masters in April, leading briefly on Saturday before finishing an excellent 8th. He looks sure to have a good week so I have no hesitation in recommending the 55/1 with Betfair Sportsbook.

Happy punting

Cuyahoga Grin

G McDowell 33/1
R Fowler 40/1
T Bjorn 55/1
J Donaldson 66/1
M Ilonen 80/1

Almost time! The best week of the year is almost upon us!

My team is ready and feeling confident of a good week:

Mikko Ilonen
£5,914.16
Ilonen has been pretty impressive since his win this year and if you look at his numbers for the Scottish Open he would have been in the the thick of it had it not been for an 8 on his card on Friday. Sort of player who often hits the front early and is very tough to dislodge.
Jamie Donaldson
£5,978.28
Donaldson is almost a heavyweight player nowadays. He has done everything wrong over the last few weeks and yet has still came close to winning twice. As with Ilonen a good first round may be the key with him although he can win despite his frustrating slow starting of late.
Jonas Blixt
£6,303.72
This lad is made for links golf, great short game and accurate long iron play makes me keep taking the 200/1 on offer.
Thorbjorn Olesen
£6,961.89
Strange year for Oleson! No real indicators for supporting him this week but he is made for tough courses and just on the off chance he has found something over the last few weeks I have taken some of the 380/1 for him.
Jason Day
£5,041.65
All year I have been talking about him as a likely winner of this years Open, I like the way he only plays selected events and focuses on the majors. He has everything required to win this week and if he is fully fit I cant see him being far away.
Rory McIlroy
£4,845.34
Rory needs a rocket up the behind! I was over the moon he shot that 78 in the Scottish last Friday as he might now get rid of what seems to me to be a bit of arrogance creeping into his game and just focus for all four rounds, if he does he could win by 15 shots!

im back from my self imposed hiatus with thicker skin than ever! i banned myself from posting on all forums of all descriptions for a few months without any real heads up to forumites. i've been instead, observing the dynamics and idiosyncrasies of each forum. the key on here is to post something and make it sound like you are not too sure of yourself. but not too unsure. if you observe social dynamics, like a workplace for example, a group will usually not like the one who sounds sure of himself, because this reinforces their own insecurity and their subsequent control dramas play out.

for instance, i have been reading and reading and in all this time imo, the best thread to get no real traction was seaside's fourth round banker tips that got rubbished because he was too sure of himself. it was going so well. aberdonia asked for a tip, molinari came in and then the thread is over because seaside didn't get the encouragement and thanks he should have got. this really made me upset and reinforced to myself why i had to have a hiatus. but in hindsight that should have been the moment i came back....
