trouble for tiger is that he admitted to dropping it 2 yards back in the context that he was trying to avoid the flag this time and thus gaining an advantage. On a day where 'rules were rules' i can't see how they can't take action.

Golf rules are usually very strict, and by admitting hes dropped it two yrds back from the original spot means hes admitted breaking them imo
It looks on tv like hes just gone back and stood somewhere behind his divot mark and dropped the ball without really thinking or being meticulous I would say he will wait for the furore and media speculation then disqualify himself |

what a stupid mistake
By:
Why did he drop it 2 yds further back?

RP - To say I am amazed is an understatement.
Wood's got DSQ recently for not knowing the exact rules and now it might happen again!!! |

Perfect yardage.

There is no logical reason to drop it 2 yds back

Nobody mentioned this possibility at the time, either on the forum or on TV. He is drifting in the market though. Top ramping by somebody.
By:
unless it was to suit a certain yardage...the flag is not a factor
By:
drifting bigtime

i thought it was strange at the time. after watching numerous drops and unplayables... he went on his own and just seemed to drop it where he thought was right... but they aint gonna dq tiger!!! i have just layed off my little bit, just in case tho

His aim of course should have been to try and hit the flag again..so why drop further back?
By:
agree banana. cover longs but don't short it.
By:
flatter ground?
By:
Ifc this will make you laugh, he dropped further back because he did not want to hit the flag again, he is that good!!!!!
By:
drifted 0.3 of a point in the last two hours... not exactly a massive drift!
By:
perhaps so! |
By:
if i back now will it be refunded if he dq?
By:
most people wont be up and gambling on the market-only by chance i saw the drift
By:
yeah that's the impression he gave in the interview. He didnt want a repeat of the last shot. Maybe his cockey-ness could cost him big time.

Easy to spot who is Tiger red or green on this thread

The only way he gets DSQ is if they have pictures showing his original divot mark and how far back he plays the next shot from behind it and they can calculate the distance. Apart from that all they have to go on is what Tiger said.
By:
the divot mark of the 1st shot is seen quite clearly when he drops the ball
By:
Yes thats true Nige, but in such cases a lot of weight is given to what the player says
Thought by the way that this few minutes of play by Tiger was some of the best i`ve seen on a golf course |
By:
Ah here, all they need do is ask Tiger will we DQ you or not, your choice Tiger.

Here is my opinion.
What Tiger said is of no important. He could have said 50 yards back to the reporter if he wanted to. The words are of no importance. All that matters is the actual act(s) of playing golf. I have looked at the video replay of the two shots on side by side. He did drop it at the right place. What is in dispute is the rule 26.1a. Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); Now, it is not a question of dropping it in the right place as in 100% the same spot as that would be impossible and secondly is is not a question of dropping it near the spot. The word is nearly and there is a difference in the meaning of the words 'near' and 'nearly'. Tiger dropped the ball and went a bit further back, but still 'nearly' as possible. That is the correct way of playing golf as you can NOT drop the ball nearer to the hole, hence to be on the safe side you go back a bit but still in ''close approximation'' - a definition of the word 'nearly'. I would think 2 yards is reasonable as ''close approximation'' when playing golf as it's less than using 2 clubs lengths. However if the ruling body thinks 2 yards is NOT ''close approximation'' then he would be disqualified. Now for some advice. If you think Tiger will be disqualified then lay off all your greens on Tiger and remove any lays you have on the market for any players you have backed as the prices will tumble down like an avalanche. |

By:
sounds like Tiger did the right thibg by saying in his presser that he dropped it further back... where was the official???
By:
Exactly Ski it is down to the ruling body's interpretation. Probably why sky have not made comment as of yet
