Last week we had (well I thought so ) an interesting discussion on course form and recent form as factors in someone's price. I think the general sgreement was that course form influences the price to a disproportionately large degree and that recent form was more relevant.
Anyway case in point this week KJ Choi - I laid him at 50's because his recent form I was sure had been dire. Was very surprised to see him trading at this price in this field. Anyway wasn't surprised to see that last year he was 3rd in this. However at this stage last year he had just finished 6th in the Palmer Invitational and 8th in the Masters in his previous 2 starts. This year 2 missed cuts Valero and the Masters. He loves Augusta and has some great results there - a missed cut suggests his game is way out of shape to me. If you go a year further back he was 37th and a year further back 24th. Decent course form but nothing exceptional. I'm sure some one will argue he's a quality golfer and can come back to form in an instant but on this occasion and at this price I'll happily take him on. |

i agree kj cant be backed at the moment,couldnt reach some of the par 4s in 2 shots at augusta,was abysmal last week aswell

I was hoping to back Dufner but definitely not at 28/1.
So far I've gone for Chalmers at 80/1 who's also got some decent form here. |

Dufner has to be just about the worse price I have ever seen - how on earth can Stricker be roughly the same - course form taken to the extreme

Dufner's price has been shortening on a weekly basis lately, and he's got pretty decent form heading into this week; top-25 in last four events. I agree he's very short though.
Conversely Stricker has been lengthening most weeks. Probably because he's still battling injury (his neck I think?). |

taken stricker I think its a great price. also had some filled for Els @ 55s. Got some more orders in but agree that dufners price is just plain daft.

I think Stricker is an amazing price, conversely I think Bradley is a bit short but really wanted him on my team.

Dufner's price not that much of a shock - people making money off weekly him backing him pre tourney and laying half way, he was bound to go low eventually with more and more people wanting in on the act. One bad week and he'll be back to 60s pretty quick one would think.

i think the influence of course form over recent form in book maker lists is a legacy of elliotts rules and books

The best value player here is without doubt Karlsson. I have taken as much as i could get @ 130s. This man has a major class game, he was the best player in europe not so long ago, he is a better player than Hanson purely as his putting is so much better.
Personally right now he should be around 60s, 130s is a gift and there is another 30 quid up @ 130s if anybody wants it. There must be 20 players ahead of him in the betting that will not win |

Well I can wait no longer, Chris Couch has shown next to no form this year and I have been waiting for a showing from him before I waded in, but 460s and this course seems too good to miss. He was 12th last year in all around ranking and 6th in Driving! The man can play, I just hope this is the week he shows it.

I forgot to mention Couch won this event on this course in 2006, so I am hoping it stirs his game. His driving has been fine again just needs his putting to improve

Not had a good look at this yet - but I would swerve Peter Hanson. Played in the States at the Masters a few weeks ago - off to Chine last weekend and back to the states this weekend. Has to have Jetlag surely.

I think of those at the head of the market Justin Rose represents some value at around 25/1. I back Dufner pretty much every time he tees it up but his odds are VERY short for someone yet to actually close out a tournament on tour. That said I have backed him in the first round leader market at 32/1, and also backed Hunter Haas and David Mathis for first round leader. Both of these guys played well at the Valero Texas open at the weekend and both have played well here before. Don't see either winning but they could set an early target.

Yes. His ball moved on the green, after he had addressed it, even though it was the wind, and not him that had caused the ball to move.
One of a few golf rules that need to be looked at. Having said that. There was an occasion with Ben Curtis in a bunker last week, where the comms said that a rule had been changed, where if the player has not caused the ball to move, then there is no penalty. Not sure what the official ruling is now. |

I think the rule has now been changed that if ball moves not players fault there is no penalty? Didnt similar thing happen to Curtis last week.

Problem with that, ski, is that Curtis did not replace the ball. He played it as it lied.

Studying the field this looks fit for an upset. Quite a few of the fancied runners are out of sorts and don't represent a great deal of value. Of those near the head of affairs I fancy Justin Rose, GMac and Chalmers, but their odds are not that appealing so only a small interest.
I have backed Hunter Haas, Dufner, and Mathis as first round leaders. And also top 10s about Haas, Mathis, Maggert and Estes. Taken a view that all have shown recent form of sorts and although unlikely winners could quite easily contend. Lastly small win on Bettencourt. Looks tricky hence only small stakes - may have more on an interest after second round. |

Worst finish 27 Stricker. 6/6 cuts, 3 top tens, one win Dufner. 9/10 cuts, 6 top twenty fives Exactly which of the fancied runners are you referring to ? I haven't backed any of the above, but I don't quite get your point. |
