why won't you answer my question? |
By:
wiljons, why back Anderlecht at 12.5 when you can lay Munich at 1.09?
magician, I believe they nick the spread, see my example earlier |
By:
because if i put 10 on anderlecht at 12.5 i would return 115
If i laid at Bayern at 1.09 to win 115 it would cost me 10.35 |

The implication here seems to be that betfair are operating a matching engine in some markets.
BF exists as I understand it as a person to person betting exchange . If Betfair themselves are operating in these markets then that obviously isn't person to person and Betfair are exploiting their position as the operator to profit from these markets. Have they used the permission they received from the GC to operate in the exchange games markets as a precedent to do the same across the board? That would be a very worrying development. Playing poacher and gamekeeper at the same time gives them a wholly unfair advantage Has anyone received any information from Betfair that they are not acting in this manner? |
By:
wiljons, ok my bad, i thought you said backing at 12.5 would cause the market to go overround but clearly it doesn't, just didn't understand why you want it to go overround
By:
Teapot - you said earlier you tried to back Murray at 3.0 and betfair matched you at 1.48 on Duffy
So if iv got this right, lets say you put 10 at 3.0 on Murray Gives a profit of 20 If betfair layed your 10 at 1.48 then it only cost them 9.60 to get you your potential 20 on Murray Where does the 40p go? |
By:
I sense this thread could soon be removed...
In the meantime, is there any way to exploit this new "quirk" to our advantage? |
By:
"will they pass on best execution, or will they nick the spread, between request and execution price"
They pass on the best execution. If there is overage in either direction rather than leaving the bet in the market, if it can be partially matched on the opposite side of the book they match it. |

good point well made Fork
Scripophilis and The Magician's refusal to answer Mr***** questions is alarming to say the least. These are normally two polite posters but appear may have something to hide here, why's that? If it's betfair running this 'machine' are they subject to normal in-running delays like the rest of us. In fact that question applies be it betfair, end-user or The Jolly Green Giant. And if accoring to Scrip it isn't betfair OR an end-user where is the money going? To be divided up equally between all us users for a christmas pi$$-up? |

I dont know what they are doing - i did not know they started doing it, and as yet I don not know if they are doing it on horses races or not I suspect I know what they have implimented but lets wait and see.... Scrip seems to know, and I have asked - so might know something later tonight but I SUSPECT if a person asks to back a outcome at a price that is not available at the front of the cue (FOC) on the left hand side of the screen (LHSS) but that request can be matched but laying all other outcome at the FOC on the RHSS, then they do so and match you back, against a combination of back against all other runners that is what I SUSPECT questions are 1) does client still get best execution 2) does the existing time priority of the orderbnook get preserved 3) tounge in cheek, does and owner that backs an opponent get in trouble for laying his own horse :o) Betfair match that individuals by laying all other outcomes |

"Scripophilis and The Magician's refusal to answer Mr***** questions is alarming to say the least."
My god, there are so many paranoid people around! |
By:
The Magician, my post was in haste, i apologise.
By:
Magician is correct. I first spotted this on the 18th Feb, I am amazed that so few have picked up on it.
By:
Scripophilist, is it any wonder? All he's asking who is matching the bet if not betfair or an end-user, the answer surely isn't that hard.
In fact i've just asked the question myself. |
By:
What on the Blessed Virgin Mary is a 'matching engine?'
By:
the man marcus
glad you find me polite.... and hope my post ( which I was typing while you posted yours) relives any suspicion that I have anything to hide |
By:
I can't apologise enough, not like you haven't tried for ages to get a level playing field here urself.
By:
miljons, I can't be sure that they matched me at 1.48 but it was the price that appeared on the screen after I placed my bet, if they did indeed match me at 1.48 then they didn't pass it on to me they must have kept it for themselves lol... anyway im guessing a bit here because Betfair haven't announced exactly what they do, I was just surprised to matched at all
By:
Scripophilis - How did you manage to speak to someone at betfair who would confirm this?
By:
Scrip
I have called betfair - and expect an answer shortly ( but is it working on the horses) a) in the market b) in the SP betting I suspect it is as my algorythms detected a change roughly that date - but I untill tonight put it down to random fluctuations if they can do this, I assume they are now using Project X software. which is good news for all. but if this matching process is allowed then betfair should start offering All-up betting Betfair Scoop 6 etc etc |
By:
I just called betfair and they told me to delete my cookies.
This is officially becoming a job for the boys. |
By:
typical betfair response, they just told me theyd email me, which they still havnt
By:
So WTF happens to any 'leftovers' (ie overrounds)???
Does this happen when BF becomes aware of the incoming order, or only when it hits the exchange screen? |
By:
Isn't this somewhat reminiscent of what sporting options started doing.
I seem to remember that ended none too well. |
By:
to add to this, i was also told by my source that this was first implicated on Football match odds, and is liekly to be spread across the markets but not the ones with more than 4 outcomes
By:
Does this happen when BF becomes aware of the incoming order, or only when it hits the exchange screen?
Before it hits the exchange screen |
By:
exactly Lat, if you get matched at 3.0 when the best lay price is 1.48 someone other than the punter is profiting.
Apply that across all markets & you've got a nice little revenue stream. |
By:
So we've established the following:
someone/thing behind the scenes can see our bets before they hit the system, let's call it The Jolly Green Giants Matching Engine for this exercise The Jolly Green Giant Matching Engine presumably is an instant operator, else his purpose is non-existant so in summary, something behind the scenes sees the market before we do and can take the money instantly very people to people betting and fair |
By:
Particularly if you know what's coming!!!!
By:
and no 5 sec delay
By:
exactly
Ho, ho, ho i'll take it if the point goes my way, leave it if it doesn't Ho Ho Ho GREEN GIANT |
By:
wiljons 06 Mar 19:22
to add to this, i was also told by my source that this was first implicated on Football match odds, and is liekly to be spread across the markets but not the ones with more than 4 outcomes strange - reports where Project-X coudl handle this for 400 outcome events.... perhaps they are not using it yet..... mmmmm more questions than answers but this is fun, a new challange, writing bots to deal with the impact of this change |
By:
Some daft comments on here. Betfair have updated their matching engine so that if there is overage in the market it automatically gets matched on the other outcomes in the book.
Can't see what's odd about that. You ask for a price and you get it more often, nothing odd there. You can't see the bet in the market because, well, it's been matched by Betfair. I first picked this up on the 18th Feb. |
By:
I have noticed in in-running tennis over the last couple of weeks that I have fairly often been matched at exactly the price I had asked for despite no money being available at that price on a refresh just prior to my money hitting the market and no excess money being available after my matched bet. This would fit with my bet being matched via the price on the opposing player. My bet on these occasions is being matched at exactly the price I ask for which would seem to suggest that any overround goes straight to betfair's coffers. This was not happening back in January during the Australian open etc.
Surely it would be fairer to use the B.td.q system whereby available back money on a two outcome market automatically also appears as an available lay on the other side. |
By:
Are you not slightly concerned about the potential integrity implications of this, The Magician?
By:
The Magician
surely it's not possible to write a bot that can see bets before they hit the system and then match them instantly on in-play markets? |
By:
Scrip - so where do the left-overs go?
By:
Guys, I remember a thread from about 2 months ago, I asked "bot" if Betfair intends to implement cross market matching & automatic overrounds matching, does anybody remember what the thread title was or who the starter was so I can pull it off?
By:
Also: To state my position, if an outside bot is being operated, fair play, if the matching is done inside betfair's system without chance of user participation, Betfair should announce it.
By:
Scripophilist.
I thought that the matching engine they used to employ was discontinued in 2005 or thereabouts. Have you any information to the contrary? |
