Newc could easily match the wages with CL football and profit from Isak sale + Isak's wages off the books. Might have to break wage structure but not put 8 or 9 players on the same wage, just give some of them an extra 10 or 20k a week depending on contract expiry and importance, on the drip over a couple of years. Bruno and Tonali only in return for an extension. Gordon not that big a deal and contracted for longer. Everyone else replaceable or on a low wage.
Pool had Jota (RIP) and Diaz to be replaced and needed to replace Salah's goals sooner rather than later. They had buckets of money without others knowing and Wirtz + Ekitike don't adequately replace that. Isak likely tapped up since the LC final at least. The fee for Ekitike was lower without buying Isak first. The Isak fee was higher than expected I'm sure but they weren't to know that at the time and thought Isak downing tools might have kept it lower, got a higher than expected fee in for Nunez who they prob wanted rid of too, which more than made up the difference. |

Interesting to see how Ekitike and Isak fare. Both very good imho.
I wonder how good Arsenal can be with a top kawlity dynamic centre forward after the World Cup. They have the likes of Nwaneri, Skelley and Dowman emerging and probably more behind them. Also interested to see how Pep responds and his new “ method “. At the end of the day the method does not matter but having the best team does. The best team and squad usually wins. |

Arsenal fans going on about how different they were without Gyok in the 2nd half today. His link up play was good today but 95% sure he didn't mean that ball for Trossard for the second, it was an horrific thru ball for Eze imo.
It wasn't Gyok's absence that made the difference either. Arsenal regularly play like that this season (and last) when they are ahead. Been like that from the start with Arteta mostly except he now has a better defence and better structure in front of it. But he was quite animated and vocal today (and since the pre-season) about how they weren't getting the ball forward quickly enough on the counter. Encouraging to see/hear, need to be getting 4 or 5 against that today. Can prob win the PL playing like that but not the CL imo. Saka didn't look 100% today either, should have given him a rest on 70. Tougher run of fixtures coming towards the end of the month. |

Can’t get over the energy, stamina, motivation of Rice. The man is absolutely fundamental to Arsenal’s efforts. So genuine.
By:
I'll side with Man City at 6 here; Arsenal is 2/5. I think 5/1 for Man City is a stonking price this early in the season. I can still remember Arsenal capitulating despite having an 8-point lead in the 2022/23 season.
By:
Rice is best player around at the moment.
And just fits in wherever manager wants him. |
By:
I agree. He is stupendous at present.
By:
Always said since early WHU days Rice is capable of so much more than seems but he's pigeon holed into certain roles his whole career. Not surprising at a top club, England and WHU should have got a bit more out of him. Bloke would be a top CH and very good attacking midfielder (mainly running) too.

I agree City are a stonking bet @ 6.2 on here. Both Arsenal and City are looking head and shoulders better than anything else recently. Man City's next two matches might well confirm they have recovered their mojo. But is there any chance they will be sanctioned, if found guilty in 115-charge FFP case, this season?
By:
City still appear vulnerable to me, which probably explains their price.
By:
City need to add to haaland goals to challenge
Arsenal. Arsenal are reaching the point where teams are happy to take a 2-0 loss. Could be vital for prospects elsewhere. |

City are a deluxe version of United, they can now concede possession against the Arsenal's and they'll do it against Liverpool this week and counter but against sides where the onus is on them to have the ball and break them down they will struggle because they are ponderous and don't move the ball quick enough like we saw against Villa and Spurs, who are both poor sides by the way, consequently they can't win the league with those drawbacks because there aren't enough games where they can play counter attack football and consequently will drop too many points against the sides who defend deep.
The exceptions like we saw on Sunday is a side like Bournemouth who fancy themselves stepping out and pressing and allowed City plenty of space to attack and a side like Brighton who are hopeless defending but even they beat City in an open game on the counter themselves. There's all of that and then you can consider what might happen if Haaland gets injured and the fact that Arsenal are a highly functioning unit who make very few mistakes and though they themselves struggle to create in open play have the get out of jail card in their set piece excellence it's all a bit boring I'll grant you but it won't be recorded in the record books that they are football's version of snooker's Steve Davis. |
By:
i can't see City getting to the level they did 2 years back. Liverpool the only challenger to Arsenal imo. Arsenal in attack not even trying their best to go all out and score (a reason why they are so good defensively). If they improve on that can see them coasting it. Long way to go.

Such a tough year to predict - as if it is ever easy - who will win it. The big event if the year will be the African Cup of Nations. Which clubs will be most put out by it? Will all who go come back fit and well? Might it materially affect a club’s form?
By:
I believe the odds are about right. A 2-horse race, which now relies upon Arsenal holding their nerve. Not usually in their DNA.

Man U look like they'll be the worst hit by ANC. Amad Mbuemo (and Maz). That's their stronger wing too.
