H all ,
Here are my thoughts for what they are worth on the weekends DIV 2 fixtures: CHESTERFIELD 2/2 at 1.75 look a strong home win bet v Brisiol Rovers 0/2 who have made a shocking start to the season. CREWE 2/2 look great value at 1.98 to beat a struggling Crawley. Not sure why WALSALL are 3.65 away at promoted Barnet who have lost their first two games- might be worth a dip at a decent price. GRIMSBY shd beat Newport but are a very short price. Comments appreciated and of course Foin knows more about this League than i do ![]() |

I do take an interest in this league but that doesn't mean my predictions will be better. We know how competitive it is from top to bottom and anything can happen.
We have noticed that Gills and Notts lack strike power but have strength in depth and their games are likely to be candidates for unders. Note also that the 3 relegated teams are finding things difficult as did the teams relegated the previous season. The promoted teams from the National league tend to do well so I'm finding Barnet's inability to find the net inexplicable. As mentioned before let's see where we are after 5 games although I will be seriously considering unders bets for Barrow v Notts and Tranmere v Gills |
|
By:
Just one word of caution for those backing Unders for Tranmere v Gills, only twice in the last 10 meetings between the two at Tranmere has under 2.5 come in.
One of those was actually last season's encounter though. However, in the reverse fixture at Priestfield in the same period under 2.5 has come in EIGHT times. We have to wait until February 7th for this seasons potential thriller. |
|
By:
Thanks Dixie. Two things about this fixture make me hesitate. Firstly Tranmere won 4-0 against Shrewsbury last time out and secondly the price which is shaping up to be very short around 1.6
That price is a killer, I would consider 1.8 or better as fair value. |

Chesterfield and Oldham fixtures are 12.30 starts

Good luck with your treble again this weekend the Dragon.
My choice today is for Salford which I picked for the comp. I also hope that Col U get off the mark at Shrewsbury. No bets on the EFL for me this week but I've had a little interest in the Jupiler who are a week ahead of us in the number of games played. |

thanks foin gl with your selction also

bristol rovers down to 10 men

|
By:
great start for chesterfield 3 wins in 3 games. two late goals gives them a 3-1 front
happy with my ante post bet so far ![]() |
|
By:
The usual watching paint dry first half for Gills supporters.
Unders looking good at this stage, only 1 shot on target so far. |
|
By:
A positive blockbuster of a second half but under 2.5 still landed as the game ends 1-1.
A very familiar scoreline for Gills fans - since Gareth Ainsworth took over as manager, no less than 8 of their 13 games have finished 1-1, remarkable. |
|
By:
I was pleased to see Colchester get their first victory and Salford keep up the good work. I don't think we can write Bristol Rovers off just yet, they did equalise during the second half despite being a man down.
A dismal start for Notts County, losing in the seventh minute of added time today. Martin Paterson was only appointed in June but he won't make Christmas in the job at this rate. MK Dons are showing why they are favourites to win the title and Crewe are matching Chesterfield for now with 3 wins. |
|
By:
yes should be a very interesting season ahead.
watching brief on the dons battered a woeful chetenham team wo have zero pointsand a -8 goal diff. fishing towns also made a decent start, fleetwood and grimsby. my four selections all won so very pleased with my bets so far - made a good start to the season - pity they were only small bets ![]() full set of fixtures on tuesday evening. gills v chesterfield shd be interesting and mkd away at crawley looks nailed on. will post full thoughts next week |
|
By:
ok- so full set of fixtures tomorrow with some fascinating games but a no no from a betting perspective as too hard to call.
However the ones are do like are SWINDON at home to newly promoted Barnet at 2.16. Swindon will be a top 6 team i reckon with their canny manager and shd be too good at home to a team who have lost every game in the higher league. MKDONS must be a gimme at 1.85 away to second bottom place team Crawley. Undefeatd BROMLEY might be woth an interst away at bottom club Cheltenham at 2.68. Three singles, treble and patent on the three selections- all small stakes given its so early in the season. Gl if u give any of them a go |
|
By:
The selections all look sound to me The Dragon provided there are no important injuries or suspensions.
I might be tempted into backing them singly, I never do multiples. |
|
By:
cheers foin gl if u have a dip on any of them

Thanks The Dragon, GL with your bets too.

Gills finally bagged a few tonight, hopefully a sign of things to come. Sam Vokes came on as a late sub as well so nothing to dislike.

The results tonight show how unpredictable this league still is. I actually backed Salford and settled down to watch the game. It was so scrappy that I chickened out and recovered my stake less 7% after half an hour before a goal had been scored. I then watched a bit of Colchester and watched them concede a couple of goals in as many minutes and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and then watched the rest of the Swindon V Barnet game. For the half hour or so that I saw, Barnet were the better side, the first goal was deserved but the very late second was farcical non-existent defending when Swindon were pressing for an equaliser.
Crewe are sitting pretty and by what miracle did Gillingham score 4 goals in one night? That's their ration for a whole month used up. |
|
By:
Notts County play Shrewsbury tomorrow, what a dismal prospect. I can't hope to predict the result but will be backing unders.
|
|
By:
Foin - in many ways it was a typical Gills performance. only 29% possession but this time they had a cutting edge, 6 shots on target to Chesterfields 3.
Although two goals were penalties however. First one dubious, second one pretty clear cut. Chesterfield had most of the ball but it was all sideways and backwards stuff. Possession stats are often meaningless as i'm sure you know. Young Lenni Cerino scored on his debut, signed on a short term deal from Blackburn. A Montserrat international of all things ! I have a hunch Notts Co v Shrewsbury may be a bit better than you are expecting. As you say, unpredictability is this league's mantra. |
|
By:
Crewe are looking like the real deal.
The scary thing is that 4 of their better players have been out injured since the summer and have yet to join up with the squad. Will be interesting when they come back if the manager changes a winning formula |
|
By:
yup mkd and swindon cost me as most of league 1 selections won as did bromley - hey ho
![]() |
|
By:
II had an 8 fold at 335-1 just for fun, £3
Six wins, just not MKD or Swindon! |
|
By:
soooooooooooo frustrating WD Similiar story here. They were my two bankers

I hop you are right about the Notts game Dixie. They are still without last season's top scorer Alexana Jatta (a The Gambia international would you believe). I think he is back from suspension on Saturday. In the meantime summer signing from Carlisle Matthew Dennis scored his first goal for the club on Saturday. He has lots of energy but squanders a lot of chances from what I've seen so far. Shrewsbury have yet to find the net this season in L2, however Notts seem unable to keep a clean sheet so maybe BTTS: Yes might be the call. Well, this is league 2 and anything could happen, even a goal fest.
|

By:
4-1 to County Foin.
Expect the unexpected in Div 2 ![]() |
|
By:
Yes, you were right, it was a good game to watch. There was some poor defending by Shrews, the first goal was an error by the keeper who stopped a low cross but couldn't hold on to the ball. Shrewsbury were OK in midfield but only converted one chance, a free header. If they can't get some fresh face soon they will be in deep trouble. Notts looked sharp in front of goal but probably flattered somewhat by the opposition.
I also watched two periods of 15 minutes each of the Celtic game, they didn't impress at all especially when you consider their opponents had travelled from East Asia and were playing in a different time zone. They will have to do a lot better on the away leg. |
|
By:
County playing Bromley and Gills v Crewe on Saturday.
Should be loads of goals based on midweek results, so best go for Unders ![]() |
|
By:
Probably right especially as Notts will have Jatta available. No score draws on the cards.

I would not touch( either game!
|
|
By:
You must have seen Gills v Crewe a few times in the 70s WD , there was always goals when they played each other then, i remember Joe Jacques scoring a corking own goal in one game against them, Gills still won 3-2.
Poor old Joe sadly died of a heart attack in 1981 aged just 36. |
|
By:
Joe Jaques!
I remember him well, decent player. Never knew he died age 36. Quite shocked by that. I don’t remember playing Crewe tbh. I imagine them 4th Division and us in the 3rd. I do remember Terry Venables team of the 80’s |
|
By:
That game where Joe scored the og was in 1973 WD in the old division 4.
Gills were promoted the next season and Joe was the captain. Really good pro, had moved back to his native County Durham after leaving Gills. |
|
By:
I think my first game was Boxing Day 1974, Brian Yeo scored a hat trick
Alan Wilkes and Joe Jaques had beards |
|
By:
Brian Yeo sported a beard at times as well WD, can't believe he was only 31 when he retired. Still lives in the town i believe, used to run a local newsagents after his footballing days.
Graham "Bootsie" Knight another legend and local lad from that era also had a stubbbly beard, they were like a team of vikings. |
|
By:
They did and I think even Damien Richardson did at times.
Johnny Simpson I think had the newsagents by the level crossing and Yeo up Barnsole Road? |
|
By:
A good win for Gills and a reversion to "unders" after last week's Lord Mayor's show. Bristol Rovers manage to register their first win in the league, did anyone watch them?
No great surprises from the other games. |
|
By:
Gills actually had nearly as many chances today as the other night, Crewe really should have scored, they hit the woodwork a couple of times and missed a sitter. So the game deserved more goals.
WD - Brian Yeo actually bought his newsagents a year before he retired, he says that later he regretted not hanging on for a couple more years before giving up the game. He scored 31 goals that promotion season , Gills were really good to watch that year, top scorers with 90 goals. Damien got 18 and Wilksey 15. Yes John Simpson also had a newsagents near the ground, he was in goal when i went to my first game in 1969. 571 league appearances is some achievement, in fact at the time it was a football league record for any club. He sadly died at the age of just 60. Ron Hillyard was only 8 games away from John's record when an injury ended his playing days. We were lucky to have had two such good keepers playing at Priestfield. |
|
By:
Thanks Dixie, that's worth bearing in mind.
