Those 1979 games were certainly interesting WD. Good old Kenny Price heavily involved in the aggro from memory .
I remember Gills fans had a rivalry with Reading in the late 70s too, never understood why. My mates and i attended an FA Cup game away against them in 1978 and there was loads of old bill there anticipating trouble, thankfully nothing major occurred. At the time i used to wear a gold pocket watch and chain that my grandad had bequeathed me, wrapping the chain around my jeans belt with the watch in the hip pocket, a copper insisted he was going to confiscate it as it could be used as a weapon. It took me a good ten minutes to talk plod out of it ![]() Gills have a few injury worries for Saturday so be careful backing them at this stage, Little and Dack (natch !) both doubtful. |

Oh yes great fun as a highly testosteroned teenager.
I remember Ken Price saying in the local paper I will go in where it hurts. To that add Danny Westwood and Damien Richardson we had the firsy forward line to score 50 goals in the season with all 3 scoring ten or more. I remember Southend and Chesterfield were despatched on following Saturdays for 7 then 10. We then added Tony O’ Cascarino the well known Italian geezer who played for Ireland! Cops could do anything then and enjoyed doing it. |

Back to the footy that Turkish treble is still on in my book although the Fatih Karagumruk game is on Sunday. They can be covered quite easily and I would also say Galatasaray -1 is on the cards for speculative heft.

An old mate of mine played for Gillingham , Dave Mehmet ( RIP )
By:
Dave Mehmet was a very good striker for Gills, String. Top scorer one season and captain for a time. Only 63 when he died, very sad.
WD - think your recollection of Tony Cascarino is a bit awry, he joined the club in 1982 after Gills supplied a set of tracksuits to Crockenhill to secure his transfer . He left before the 1987 season, at the start of which Gills had those two thumping wins, actually 8-1 v Southend and 10-0 v Chesterfield (who had been top at the time without conceding a goal !). New signing Steve Lovell had replaced Cas and scored four goals against Southend but remarkably didn't get on the scoresheet against Chesterfield. The club made the national news at the time. I was on hols in Gran Canaria the week after and was telling everyone i met out there to look out for the mighty Gills goal bonanza against Sunderland that Tuesday night - ended up 0-0 ![]() |
By:
![]() Age son, Ram is shrinking! I remember Dave Mehmet by name only. Sorry to hear about his demise String. Yes Cascarino came later but pretty sure he played alongside Danny Westwood. I remember his miss against Everton in the FA Cup that kept Howard Kendall in his job and the rest was history. |

Gills player Garath McCleary misses tomorrows match against Notts County as he starts a two match ban for simulation handed out today by the FA.
It relates to the late penalty awarded last week in the match against Bromley for a foul on McCleary. Seems very harsh. Now i said at the time it was a dubious award but there was some contact. The ref thought it was a penalty, is he going to be suspended too ? Can't remember this happening before. A dangerous precedent by the FA imo. |

Tranmere, Swindon and Walsall+1 are my bets for today. It looks like there might be a few draws in L2, Oldham in particular but I don't back them at SP, wait for a goal first or back 0-0.
By:
Another hard fought win for the Gills, but deserved. They are so resilient. Notts Co hardly offered any threat up front.
club record equalled. 20 league games unbeaten , Newport away next week. UTG. |
By:
16/1 on here earlier i took some of that --outrights
By:
Two out of three. Tranmere couldn't hold on to the end and a late goal rescued a valuable point for Newport County. Salford are definitely getting it together Whispering and recent signing Udoh scored 2 today.
Swindon march on with back to back 3-1 wins and Bristol Rovers' revival continues. Gillingham win by the only goal to stay on level points with Swindon at the top. |
By:
Yes Tranmere let me down for some gravy Foinavon but did ok overall, Gillingham, Salford and Swinedon came through. Grimsby, Walsall and Stevenage no cigar.
By:
86th minute equaliser against Tranmere
By:
Yes, I covered the draw by backing Walsall+1 Not a great price (1.50) but I thought the draw was a
possibility since Walsall don't score many. It sounds as if you came away with an overall profit. Gillingham rely on a strong defence like the Arsenal of old, don't know if it's much fun to watch. |

vwd on your correct score foin ---top stuff
By:
Thanks, the Dragon, the same Swindon score that Aspro won with last week.
By:
For those forumites who like betting on correct scores, of those 20 unbeaten games for the Gills, 15 have finished 1-0 or 1-1.
The unbeaten run began in March after losing away to Newport, the very same opponents they face next week in an attempt to set a new club record. Fate ? |
By:
u shd have a go on the correct score comp dixie

Can't take anything for granted in this league but Gillingham, Bristol Rovers and Walsall look the most likely winners tomorrow. Grimsby too on their day would see off Barnet and pricing up these games must be difficult for the layers too. At the moment I still favour the DNB market (or backing selections +1). If I had to choose one, it would be Bristol Rovers to beat Colchester. They have got into their stride at last whereas Colchester seems to be going backwards.
By:
Yes good call Foinavon
I got Walsall trebled with Gillingham and Stevenage but I like Rovers away so doubling down with Gillingham and Walsall. Gillingham near full strength this weekend. Dack was good last week and Little may feature. |
By:
They are good prices too which always gets me a little nervous and why I like to cover the draw. Gills defence is likely to be too good for Newport although they have scored in 3 of their 4 home games.
By:
A word of caution to all the Gills backers, they have lost their last six matches against Newport
![]() |
By:
If it's more than 12 months old it's likely to be different players, different coaches and different form.
Not to worry, recent form is in Gills favour. |
By:
Just looked on here to give my two penneth, and looks like we're all in agreement
My biggest bet this weekend is on Gills at 11/10 Followed by the Gas(Bristol Rovers) at nearly 2/1 Gl all |
By:
yes but newport are bobbins- won 1 game all season and that was away at lowley crawley..
newport have also lost every game against top 11 teams and gills are currently second in the league. gills unbeaten in 8 with 5 wins and three draws with all fixtures ahaianst teams higher than newport |
By:
Two early games, Cambridge v Fleetwood looks close, don't think there will be many goals and unders is short.
Harrogate v Shrewsbury looks like overs to me and the price is good so I've backed overs at 2.16. I've backed my 3 win selections from yesterday all +1 |
By:
Got the early games the wrong way around unfortunately. Shrews were unlucky not to get a pen but that's the way it goes.
. Harrogate deserved a hard fought win. |
By:
newport winning

I did warn Gills backers, Newport have the indian sign over them it seems. Plenty of time left.
Stevenage leading in Div 1, goal scored by a mate of mine's boy, Harvey White. Good to see a local lad doing well, maybe Gills should have snapped him up ! |
By:
gills 1-1
stevenage also 1-1 |
By:
gills winning
By:
1-3 and paid out yes
By:
Good turnaround by the Gills, Bradley Dack scoring, hope he can stay fit as he is much too good for this level when on form.
Newport have been the better side so far though, it's a ridiculously open game unlike normal Gills matches, the home team have had six shots on target already. and as i write Gills go 3-1 up with a Dack penalty. It's a funny old game saint ![]() |
By:
As we speak my Gills and Bristol Rovers bets obliging, gonna do a little covering, hate losing when I'm in front
Dixie, is the lad White related to Dean White, an old local player of yours? |
By:
Just in time, Rovers now drawing
By:
I'm covered for the draw but not the loss. Hope they don't concede another.
By:
No, no relation to my knowledge Reg . Dean was from Hastings i believe but was a bit of a legend at Gills, his boy Ben is youth team coach there now.
Funnily enough Harvey's mum is called Deana ! |
By:
leveled out my Bristol bet Reg, the next goal is a lottery at this stage should there be one.
By:
Gills win 3-1.
New all time club record, 21 games unbeaten. Well done Gareth Ainsworth and the team. |
By:
OK Dixie
Me too Foinavon But as I said my main bet were the Gills at 11/10 Can't believe they were still 14/1 on the outright market, 3 places, with bet356 before today... Gonna have another bit tomorrow if say, 10s plus Wrong thread but Baldy put up Chelsea at 7/4 in the shop today, against Man Utd this evening, had to have a bit of that |
