Great movie... Doubt they would show on British tv these days without some major cuts...

Taboo (Tom Hardy) was on BBC about 5 years ago, thought it pretty good and was dissapointed when they never made a 2nd series as it was very different to the usuall run of the mill detective stuff.

True Detective, Series 1 with Woody Harrelson and Matt Mcconaughey. 7/8 years ago this was on, I was gripped to it, absolute classic. Series 2 was nt bad either - different actors and story. I cant remember series 3.

Excellent shout Wicklow; True Detective, series 1 is up there with the best. Waiting for Prime to drop their price before watching series 2. I haven't watched Taboo, I've been tempted a few times but like many others, I've held off. It is on Netflix though so may watch the first one this evening.

Yes True detective S1 was savage viewing, the boys acting is on a different level to the usual standard in these type of programmes.

Taboo, was so out there and dark, the setting of london back in those times was so interesting, it most have cost a few bob to make and maybe thats why it was canned. But compared to the usual tripe on bbc, it was on a different level.

Myself and the missus start 1884 during the week, so thank for the heads up on that guys Cool

The Wire is certainly worth a watch.  Fargo (especially the 1st season) too.

Only season 1 of the Wire is great imho.

After that it goes downhill rapidly

I also thought The Wire was one of the best series I've watched for a long time. Thought the 5 seasons held together reasonably well and didn't go as downhill like a lot of series do, trying to reinvent the same plotlines. They come at Baltimore's drug problem from different angles, the police, the crime family, the kids, the politics, the media.

All tree seasons of True Detective also on watchseries.. https://watchseries.mx/tv/true-detective-jj4z8/2-1

I agree first season is insanely good. 2nd was just OK in comparison. Haven't watched 3rd yet.

RE The Wire, I rate is as the greatest tv series to ever be made.

Nsh, it was great from start to finish imo.

We'll have to disagree sofa.

One of the tests I have for dramas is, How real is this? Season one of The Wire passed. Season 2 onwards didn't.

Reality isn’t a factor for me. So long as I find it enjoyable viewing I don’t care if it’s far fetched or not true to life. It’s escapism.

24, Prison Break and Lost were all great when they first came out. They were all fictional though like every other series.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect everything to be a documentary but if something is selling itself as real life then I expect real life.

I'm okay with far fetched as long as it says far fetched on the tin.

My sis has been nagging me for years to watch Couplings, the British equivalent of 'Friends' - Last night, after watching the first two episodes of Taboo (which I'm actually enjoying tbf) I got into this series and it is really quite funny in places and a lot more adult-themed (risqué) than Friends. Takes a few episodes to get into it, but worth it imo.

Another one that is under the radar is Love/Hate, an irish version of the wire. Dublin drug gang etcs. Proper good.

I get why so many people write and make cop shows - the endless supply of interesting storylines but I'd rather watch a non-cop show.

Another Last Tango in Halifax would go down a treat in my house.

Looking forward to that one Dragon. Currently watching three different series, flicking between them all. The main one is the aforementioned 'Taboo' where I've been watching 2 episodes per evening; I stay more focused that way. Tonight I will watch the final two episodes (of 8) and have to agree, it is pretty good. For some light entertainment I've also been watching 'Couplings' (also previously mentioned) which although very funny in places, it appears the writers stick mainly to subject of sex. Whilst I'm as red-blooded as the next guy, it does get a little monotonous after a while. The final series is called 'The Syndicate' - There are 4 series, each one showing different lottery syndicate winners and their stories, both as a group and individual. Timothy Spall stars in the first series, set in Leeds, and to be fair, I quite enjoyed it.

On the subject of Timothy Spall, if you can find a copy (I had buy the DVD) I strongly recommend the film 'Pierrepoint' with Spall playing the lead.

On Timothy Spall, The Sixth Commandment is very good, very dark, it was on recently based on two murders.

Having watched "the syndicate" with the kids and missus a few months back (series 4!), I never knew there was more series of it - Its often hard to find something we can all watch together that we all enjoy.
So cheers Aspro Cool

I've stumbled upon an absolute gem of a series that's well worth passing on. Unfortunately it's on Disney+ though but hopefully it's available elsewhere if you don't have it.

It's described as 'An Australian crime, black comedy series'. "

"Mr. Inbetween."

The lead part is played by Scott Ryan who is an absolute ripper in that role.

Rotten Tomatoes - 95%
IMDB - 9.3/10
S.B. - A*

You beauty.

I mentioned that at the start of this thread Slippy, although it was only a brief mention and I didn't go into any detail at all. I watched them all a few weeks back and have to agree it is a peach of a series. I also found a few episodes online, but the quality is not so good. It certainly gets my vote so I'm hoping that Disney return their offer of a few weeks back (£1.99pm for 3 months, cancel anytime) so that more can take a look for a small outlay. The current (not-so-good) offer ends on the 31st so hopefully it'll come back after this.

Glad you mentioned it again because it's a must-watch series, taken from the film 'The Magician' with the same lead.

I missed your post about it Aspro but glad you had already endorsed it!
I watched the first series in one sitting and that really had me hooked, the lead actor is magnificent. Top notch stuff.

Just watched Training Day after it was recommended. Far too corny for me and too many bullets.

Been watching The  Reckoning with Steve Coogan as Jimmy Savile.

Coogan has Savile off to a tee and they get 60s slum housing very well but there's a little too much rewriting of history for my liking. I can't believe Savile was worried about being found out as a predator in the 1960s. Everyone was at it. John Peel was married to a 14 year old. Jimmy Page lived with a 14 year old. Even in the 70s Bill Wyman had a 13 year old girlfriend and no one said a word.

Here's a tip for you movie buffs. If you haven't heard of it before, check out 'MusicMagpie' - They sell both used and new DVD's (and a lot more), cheap as chips (well, most of the used ones are anyway) where occasionally they'll do deals, like 3 (selected) DVD's for a fiver etc (free postage too). I have used them countless times and all of the used DVD's have been faultless. They arrive within a few days and excellently packaged. Check it out if you just cannot find that film you're looking for. It's not a given, but trust me, I've found many a cheap purchase, especially some older films and series.
