The players should just hit it hard and low, every time a player stutters it increases the risk of missing the pens- you'd think they would be coached how to increase the chances of scoring from what is a basic goal scoring opportunity

Got to feel sorry for Pickford, he did what he needed to do.
By:
Southgate had the game won? Bollócks. He has never had a Plan B. If anything they scored far too early
By:
yeah pickford did well
By:
Stones has gone a whole tournament
without a stupid mistake, thats a low target, but he's a decent player when he cuts out the errors. Maguire played well too, bar a dreadful passback at 0-0 |
By:
good night for you Sonts' - must have been sweating the shoot out ...better team won though, no question.

tonight put England back 20 years

By:
On the plus side - only one year until the World Cup and we have a great chance
By:
I backed Italy pre tournament so fairly neutral tonight but don't get the anti English posts on here at all- seems like even the English wanted Italy to win

Brentford
Cheers, I won't rub it in with any more posts because that's not a nice way to lose for anyone I feel relieved not smug |
By:
Understandable. No one likes cheats and divers. Justice was done.
By:
Southgate would even lose at shadowboxing

England don't have a good defence. They have midfielders protecting a dodgy defence. Maguire and Stones did well tho. maguire esp, but they didn't have to defend much.
Arsenal had the 2nd best goals conceded in the PL last season. You would never say they had a good defence tho. England play similar with better players. |
By:
Well done SS, bet you are relieved after the last few weeks lol
By:
But they rarely had to do anything y-h-t-l. England barely stretched anyone so there were very, very few flash counter attacks. Young Phillips, sweeping in front of them, made their lives so very easy. Having Kane coming back to gather as well? Criminal really.

Mount doesn't look ready, but
he's had some good experience. Same for saka for me, southgate sees something, he's quick, for sure. Sterling had a good tournament but somewhat wasted in final until Italy equalised. Foden, sancho, grealish, bellingham all underused. Maybe not ready. Rashford, dunno, where does he fit in? |
By:
good on ya SS, I know you're a decent football guy behind the mask

Henderson
Our best passer, and exactly what we needed... Maybe wasnt fit enough? |
By:
level.
By:
Southgate has 18 months to learn tactically, integrate Bellingham and grealish and build a fluid attack.
He is learning on the job. He has learned since the World Cup. He can play like this most but not all of the time. He might be better off going now because he'll likely not get a 3rd soft draw in a row but he won't. He needs to be tactically versatile with a plan b and c |
By:
Walker did well, but think
he should be kept to centre back for England. |
By:
Anyway, well done winners, been a great tournament for boosting the bank again. Few more weeks and it'll be premiership again

Rice and phillips
Both did OK, but don't win enough tackles for me. I'd be happier with either rather than both. |
By:
Southgate doesn't have it. He proved it once again tonight. He's a great waffler and the FA love that. I think you're stuck with him for a while.

By:
Well done mega
I've enjoyed the tournament And the company on the match threads. |

Three significant defeats now in penalty shoot outs.
But in 1990 and 1996 we were trying to win the game right to the end against good teams. Italy were organised , Chiesa was class ....but... the negative tactics for the best part of 2 hours with some much attacking flair was all Southgate's miserable failure. And I have never seen a player looking more frightened in a penalty shoot out that Sako. No doubt all the managers UEFA coaching accreditations led to this truly hapless decision. |
By:
Anyway, back to the serious stuff in a few weeks. Pre-season friendlies start.
By:
Maguire played well too, bar
a dreadful passback at 0-0 That dreadful backpass led to the goal. |
By:
The ref didn't but buy Raheem Sterling's dives.
Good game, very exciting. |
By:
Well done Italy backers and well done Italy.
By:
congratulations italy, imo the best team in the tournament yet they were second best against spain and despite being better than england only beat us on penalties.
