VAR the slightest ever touch by a defender on a forward and not enough to keel my granny over without her walking frame viewed for over 2 minutes in ultra slow motion by VAR officials who decide that constitutes a penalty, i despair where they are taking our game and to the other end of the spectrum we see each weekend numerous blatant shirt pulls, rugby tackles and holds at corners against attackers and VAR goes missing like it has never existed, total amateurs running the VAR freak show.

It needs to go. Didn't even bother looking at two possible penalties in the Bournemouth match. Villa goal was offside, Firmino goal was not. How can they still bollox up a decision when they've watched it a dozen times on a replay? Laugh

The Watford penalty is disgraceful, oh look we can give this *cough* make a few bob backing the next goal as well *cough* and make it a grandstand finish

Unpopular opinion: I thought Watford's was a penalty and I thought Brighton's was last week too. The defender impeded the forward in both cases and it was a foul in both cases. Silly from Jorginho to leave his foot out like that after the ball was gone. It doesn't have to be enough to make him fall over. Blame Jorginho for doing something stupid if you have a gripe about it. He was asking for a pen to be given doing that. People saying Keane didn't intend to stand on Connolly's foot because he was watching the ball. Since when has intention had anything to do with it? He impeded the forward and it's a foul -  end of. People going on about Keane's intention do not understand the rules if they think that's relevant. Soft pens but pens all the same. Keane was simply unfortunate, Jorginho was simply stupid.

If Watford's happens on the sideline and Deulofeu is running down the wing and a free-kick is given nobody complains. Clear foul, penalty all day long. Don't overcomplicate it. I can understand the complaints about the Brighton pen more but still a pen for me.

Was the red card in the Everton game given through VAR if so another ridiculous decision, tackle was a booking at worst which the referee gave, had to be VAR decision after seeing the injury changed to a red card, all the damage done by other spurs player.

The Watford pen was this a clear and obvious error ? i think you already know the answer to this with 2 minutes of slow motion replays from about half a dozen different camera angles

Var really are clueless on so many instances and when Son got the red card for the horrendous incident i thought in real time what for its just a mistimed tackle and trip which resulted in the unfortunate set of circumstances resulting in the injury, now i can make that judgement in real time and so does the ref who issues a yellow then these clowns overturn it to a red simply because of the events immediately after even when they can watch numerous replays of the foul but then it gets even worse with the premier league stating it was a red because of endangering the safety of a player, well in that case every single foul in every single premier league game is potentially endangering the safety of players and a red card and i see an appeal against the red card but will the premier league admit they got this badly wrong yet again and that a yellow card was sufficient, hope Gomez's career has no lasting damage from this and he can return to Evertons midfield.

It's clear on the video that Jorginho fouled him and the ref didn't give it or see it so that is a clear and obvious error on the ref's part. VAR is being awfully implemented but that really isn't one of the decisions I'd have an issue with. There are probably 20 or 30 so far that are more questionable. If you have a problem with that penalty then it is really a problem with the rules. If it happens on the sideline nobody has an issue with it. It was a stupid thing to do.

VAR enables them to see a lot more of what goes on and to see a lot more fouls that they would miss otherwise but that doesn't mean they weren't fouls before VAR came in. You are impeding a player when you do things like that and it's a foul and always was.

The player could easily have stayed on his feet therefore it hardly impeded him,he decided to go down because he wanted to win a penalty and knew there is always some gullible ref or VAR person willing to oblige, its embarrassing really fit strong professional footballers going down like that whereas in Rugby league you can have 3 players of 15 stone trying to drag a player to the ground and they find it difficult and if it was so clear and obvious a penalty then it would have been given by VAR fairly promptly not waiting an eternity so we will have to disagree on this instance.

Watched the Son Penalty appeal several times, diving has become an art, or should I say finding contact has, Son knew the defender was behind him & trailed his leg to touch the defender, when contact was made down he went, these falls or collapses by the attacking player's really should be easier to interpret as unnatural movements, also if Son was booked for this he never would have attempted the tackle on Gomez.
By:

When: 04 Nov 19 18:47
Common sense suggests Son was hardly touched & should not have been deemed a penalty ... but if the rules were followed rigidly there was minimal contact & as such a foul was committed. We have now got into such a fuzz about VAR that nobody including the very people who implement it are changing their decisions from game to game .. it is a fiasco & anyone with any semblence of sense within the hierachy of the FA will ask for it to be removed from the game ... except for goal line use

heard some people today saying they felt sorry for son getting a red card, it wasnt a red card but i dont feel sorry for him, i detest professional fouling, its anti football and if players sometimes get a harsh red for it, well, tough

Going down when there's contact is not a new thing. Unfortunately players feel they have to in cases like that. The contact slowed him down slightly, that is impeding the player just like a slight pull of the shirt or arm would. You are not allowed to do that, you are seeking to gain an unfair advantage by impeding the player and you are not attempting to play the ball and it is always a foul. It was always a stupid thing to do but 100 times more stupid when you know the refs can have a look at it afterwards - just like Sissoko in the CL final. There is no need to do it and you are asking for a pen to be given.

I've no idea why it took the VAR people so long to decide, maybe they thought there was no contact at all and had to be sure there was. But once there was it is a clear pen, the ball and the man are gone and you are not challenging for the ball you are leaving your leg out to impede the player.

Re Son's foul on Gomez, it may not be a red card under the rules in all cases but it should be. Those challenges kill the flow of the game and if you have to slide full stretch just to catch the back leg of the player with the ball a further yard or two in front you must know that you have zero chance of playing the ball before you make the challenge. Should be a red every time, they need to be stamped out of the game.

I am glad you are not a ref as giving red cards out for that type of foul will lead to matches being abandoned as there will not be enough players left on the pitch to finish the game, i have yet to hear a pro or former pro or manager etc to state that Son's foul was a correct red.
By:

I said it should be a red, not that it was a red, ie rules need changing to stamp out those challenges

Not sure Sissoko knew a lot about it in the CL final lurka; he was pointing to another player when the ball hit his arm. Harsh decision imo, but rules are rules.

I agree but he should have known that having his arm up in the box was silly given all the VAR pens given in the CL that season and the WC the summer before. Again asking for a pen to be given and leaving himself in the hands of officials all too eager to award a pen (Kimpembe, Danny Rose, Otamendi etc the warning signs were there). Pocch should have told his players 'keep your arms down at all times', maybe he did.

they should have used VAR for a couple of years just to deal with the cheats  ...that would have helped the game no end .

why wasn't that Deli Alley hand ball  dealt with  btw ?   that was as clear a penalty i've ever seen

say what you like about var but in germany i'd say most of the time i know what the conclusion will be after seeing the replays for any review, its reasonably consistent, the eve/spurs game left a feeling of no confidence in the way its being run here, the alli handball must be the most clearest and obvious penalty (based on video evidence) you could get, in germany i'd have bet 1/10 it would be given

Alli's was a ridiculous decision esp when it doesn't even have to be deliberate this season. Dermot Gallacher on SSN said it should have been a pen.

Brought in to overturn clear and obvious errors, Son's bizarre straight red card was (as far as anyone can tell) not even reviewed by VAR so Spurs had to play the last 15 mins with 10 men which went some way towards them ending up with 1 point instead of 3.  Thankfully overturned by the independent panel so at least he doesn't get a 3 match ban for this nonsense.  Another win for VARce

Son was initially given a yellow card by the ref and someone was obviously in the refs ear to change it to a red in my opinion, does anyone know if this was VAR as i do not recollect the ref giving the VAR sign to change his decision or was it likely the linesman or 4th official or indeed the ref took it upon himself after seeing the carnage ?

Just read the BBC article and sounds like the ref himself changed it whilst VAR sat on there hands

Leipzig disallowed goal for barely brushing the arm of a Leipzig player outside the box. Ball was passed twice afterwards and scored from outside the box. Just giving them yet another reason to disallow a good open play goal which the handball had zero bearing on.

Need to severely restrict the use of VAR to howlers only or else limit both teams to 1 review a game.

Agreed they are slowly strangling the game finding more and more ways to chalk off goals when it is a low scoring sport and sometimes in a tight game the 1st goal will open up a game leading to it being more entertaining .

once the ball touches your arm, and you gain control, you may as well just punt
it to their goalie, as you cannot score under new laws.

The new handball rules for forwards was designed to stop any goal being scored by some forwards hand or arm however accidental and also to rule out goals scored by accidentally being controlled by the attackers arm but all this was for inside the penalty box and of course now some referees and VAR have wrongly started implementing this all over the pitch when it was designed for just the penalty box in direct contrast with the fact that any defensive accidental handball inside the penalty box is not a penalty unless the hands are in a position outside a natural silhouette of the body just like the Delle Ali handball which under the new rules should have been a penalty but VAR conveniently chose to ignore the new handball rules for defenders inside the penalty box on this occasion.
