Ramsey to June being reported as a done deal, as widely expected. £140k a week for five years - that a cool £36 million.

Agree with you, Enpassant. It's becoming clearer and clearer why they went for Emery.

This shows the contempt that this business has for its customers, if I can put it that way. Completely happy with 5th or 6th place with tv money rolling in from the Premier League and the Europa League (even if it's less cash than CL). We're currently just 3 points off 4th with half the season gone - probably much better than most of us expected at the start of the season. I think that what frustrates fans most is that there isn't even an attempt financially to bolster the squad so that we can try and compete for that fourth CL spot.

Imagine if we were struggling near the foot of the table and in a relegation battle - would the hands still stay in the pockets in that situation? I think not, so why not show just a bit of ambition.

We have NO flair/creativity in central mid (or bench)so will HAVE to be dangerous from the flanks with no height in the side.

Doesn't look great but at least we look a small bit better defending today. If we had a little something different in CM this game is there for the taking. As it is it is 50/50.

So so poor. We just had nothing to change the game. The 2 CH's touched the ball in the last 20 minutes than anyone else. Poor from the moment the team was announced to the last kick of the game. For those wanting Ozil out (and I'm not suggesting he has been great by any means) without him we have no creative ability in the entire squad. Horribly balanced side out today indicative of what is available. Prioritise a hopeful bid to win the Europa because this squad is not getting top 4 as it stands.

ridiculously bad header from Xhaka for their goal, headed it into the ground in our box FFS. The amount of idiotic challenges we make is just shocking, our players have no football intelligence when it comes to defending and nothing is being done about it. It really is schoolboy mistakes being made again and again.

I said Rice is a player I'd like to see us sign a few days ago. He probably just became unaffordable now, not that we are going to spend money this window.

Xhaka is not good enough and has made countless mistakes that have led to us conceding goals but there he is first name on the teamsheet week after week. The worry wasn't a simple mistake today it was the ineptitude of our game play. It's not like it couldn't be predicted before the game ; Emery got so many calls right early season now the opposite is true. I have no idea if Torreira is carrying something but if not then Emery must accept a great deal of blame indeed. Lacca throwing his arms about constantly did not help anyone but I have a little sympathy for him and Auba as they had nil created for them.
If wages is the barrier to buying then we need to sell asap because we have deadwood in the squad. Personally I would sell any combination of Xhaka for 2 bob right now, Elneny, Iwobi, Jenkinson, Ramsey (for nothing just to get his wages off the books), Koscielny, and if selling most of these meant we could get 2 players in that actually help the TEAM then that's fine by me.

We are always going to underachieve for as long as Kroenke is owner. Simple as that. It was obvious he was going to suck the life out of the club like he has with all his other teams. No money to spend is disgraceful, it's not as if Emery spent loads in the Summer. Can't see him staying more than his 2 year contract if this keeps up.
By:

It's not the transfer fees that are put up as the issue. It is the 7% maximum increase in wages to adhere to FFP.

I think the way Kroenke thinks is, why should I put my own money into the club when the club can't even spend it's own money properly, that's why he sent his son over and before you know it, Wenger has gone, Gazidis has gone, there's a new footballing director in charge, a new head of recruitment and a new manager.

The mess that has been made in recent years has been amazing, allowing so many players contracts to run down to the point where, they leave on a free or for peanuts, the signing up of current players on ridiculous wages such as Ozil, poor recruitment of players in the first place and the poor coaching where players never seemed to improve over time such as Walcott.

As far as I understand it, you can only increase your wage bill by 7% annually, which would explain a) why Ramsey is leaving and b) why Arsenal can't buy anyone and are only looking for loans where the parent clubs pays part of the salary til the summer where they can offload some players.

I would imagine Emery can't wait to get rid of Ozil on 350k a week, you can sign two needed defenders on 175k a week instead, where it's actually needed. The problem being is Ozil is contract for a few more years and nobody bar China will pay up that kind of money to take him on, seems to me Emery is trying to shuffle him out the door so he might take up the next best offer.

Imo, Emery is the least culpable of everyone, when he came into the club he never had big shoes to fill he has a big mess to clean up, Leno is a good keeper, Lichenstein is just a stop gap used to cover Bellerin, Koscielny and Monreal should now be moved on and Mustafi is not top drawer, it's no coincidence Arsenal's form has dipped since Holding became injured, he suits the way Emery wants his defenders to play out from the back.

Every manager needs 3 transfer windows to get the players he wants and to ship out those surplus to requirements, he should be judged next season imo, this season is a free hit.

Emery will get the time because we all know he cannot be held to account for the underlying problems. That said he is making some pretty questionable calls on things that are in his control.

It's a little early to do as yet but it may benefit us to forget top 4 and use the league as a way of introducing 2/3 young players into the side and see how they get on. It could save us a small fortune if even one shows he is good enough. There would be little to lose in such a situation.
Also shake up the first 11 as it isn't working anyway. Not to upset anyone here but; put Niles beside Torreira in place of the hapless Xhaka and if it doesn't work nothing will be lost but we could find he is far superior. Mavrapanos (fitness is a ? of course)could go straight in and see if he can save us £30m odd). Smith-Rowe could be given his head in the 10 role.
All this could only be done, I suspect, if we have lost all chance of top 4- which situation we are heading to at a rate of knots of late.

'Worst Arsenal side I've seen.'

I have no frame of reference to work from but good to know.

'Woeful stuff, barely trying.'

Yes woeful indeed and agreed. barely tring- I do not agree and think this remark lacks any real analysis or evidence of the eye ie an easy thing to say post- a throw away line.

'Miles off.'

Agreed.

So if your intention was to 'strike a nerve' in that there was a glimmer of something in your post I hope this response confirms the merit of that thought.

I like the views of anyone Arsenal or otherwise but to simply come on an Arsenal thread after a poor display and defeat with the above is, well, barely worthy of a comment and thus my response of 'cheers'.

Good evening to you also.

Niles getting some stick- He had a poor game at RB (not his position) had some poor games earlier in the season at LB (also not his position). His best game came when he was freed of those defensive duties in midfield. Emery sticking to what is now a tried and failed system

Emery does seem to be making some strange calls but maybe he just wants to get things straight in his mind who to get rid of at the end of the season??

Kroenke seems reluctant to put any of his own money into the club so getting in the required players just aint gonna happen anytime soon.

The previous regime Gazidis/Wenger has left the club in a pretty poor state, and getting back into a top  4 side
again will take a good while, as long as Stan refuses to flash the cash.

I agree with the point about a manager needing a few transfer windows to sort things out, but clearly nothing is going to happen in this particular window.

Emery already sounds a lot like Wenger in his interviews - a company man who tows the party line and protects the Board who - as a fair few have pointed out on this Forum - are the real problem. He even said that he was happy with the quality of players he has at his disposal, which is a real concern. The issue at Arsenal is that they are owned by a company with a number of sporting interests and we are not the priority in the owner's portfolio. I would have thought that having a Top 4 Club would be a minimum requirement and would give you a much better opportunity to 'grow the brand globally' as the marketing types would have it.

It's certainly not the worst Arsenal side I've seen as I go back to the Terry Neill and Steve Burtenshaw days, but that was one of the worst performances I've seen in many a year. Totally bereft of guile, creativity and heart. Top 4 already gone, FA Cup exit likely imo, which means we'll be stumbling on in the Ropey until we meet someone competent. Depressing stuff, all things considered.

No need for Kroenke to put in his own cash, not that he ever has or would. He just has to spend the cash generated by the club on strengthening the team. He has been hoarding cash within the club for 7 years now. It was up at £200m a few years ago before the TV deal rose by £60m a year per club. Seeing any of his teams do as well as they can has never been a priority for Kroenke.

He keeps the cash within the business because that increases the value of his business, that is his priority with all of his teams. He does not see strengthening the team as doing that, even though players have resale values when you are willing to spend on giving them new contracts. He is such a skinflint that he refuses to do this and then we lose valuable players for nothing/cheap every single year and replace them on the cheap, if at all. If he'd invested in the Summer of 2015 for example, we could have a much better squad now worth a lot more than what he paid for them. Everyone could see that transfer fees would rise because the new TV deal was already agreed by then. Instead he spent £10m on Cech and Leicester won the league the next season.

For years we were told 4th place was our rightful place in the table because: money. That is still the case but it mightn't be for much longer. We are a massive club with a massive brand and huge resources. He has hijacked the club and hoarded those resources for himself. Mothballed the club like all his other teams. David Dein advised against him and the board should have known he'd do this because that was the only track record he had as an owner.

Fans need to see the light with this guy and not wait another 10 years before copping-on like they did with Wenger. A manager with defensive nous would still make us better and we could get top 4 but not going to stay there more than a year or two with Kroenke sucking the resources out of the club. He said he didn't buy Arsenal to win trophies. He's not even hiding the fact. How many other owners have bought clubs and said something like that? Plain for all to see.

Kroenke is bad for football let alone our club. As a business man he is very clearly successful but he mugged up over here.  He obviously listened to a highly educated and sophisticated Arsene Wenger on footballing matters and the yes man Gazidis. That was his biggest mistake (from his point of view).
The problem we are experiencing now is a direct consequence of what those two did (never forgetting Kroenke is a decease at our club).
Our ability (more likely willingness or not) to buy players will not be revealed until we have got rid of several players on high wages. Some may not want to leave but some will be sold off.
If we manage to lose those players that do not figure in Emery's plan or might but for the fact they are not value for their wages- then and only then will we know for certain if there has been a change in ambition at the top.

So as much as I am uneasy with the entire outlook, I will hold my judgement until the club has lowered the wage bill in line with FFP. I do not think it is time for boycotts or the like, not yet.
By:

When: 13 Jan 19 21:53
Kroenke would not see anything he has done at Arsenal as anything other than successful. The value of the shares he bought has risen massively since 2011, that's all he cares about. Reducing costs and making the company more profitable as a result. The football team is just incidental to that.

He didn't listen to Wenger or Gazidis, they listened to him. They told the fans for years there was lots of money to spend when there wasn't and that the squad was good enough when it wasn't. All that talk about Wenger not seeing value in the market was guff to fob off the fans and protect Kroenke. Emery is doing the same now, they all know who their boss is. They wouldn't have hired Emery without clearing that with him first.

Change in ambition? There has been no change, it has been the same since he took over. There is no ambition, he didn't buy Arsenal to win trophies. He said it himself.

FFP? There is no issue with FFP, not even close. You can't hoard £200m+, probably £300m+ now, and be anywhere close to the FFP limit. The worst thing is that under FFP rules I don't even think we can spend that money because the rules provide that spending has to come from revenue generated within the same FFP period and most of that money was hoarded away in previous periods. I don't think there is anything in the rules about cash reserves.
By:
enpassant
When: 13 Jan 19 22:03
Wenger and Gazidis are gone because they made a complete mess of transfers and contracts which has costs the club (ie Kroenke)£100m's - as a businessman he will absolutely consider that a very big mistake. Just because one aspect has (shares) has gone well does not mean he balances that out- he will look at it coldly as lost revenue.

Again Lurka you seem to have misunderstood my post. I am not sure how or even why that is the case.

To be clear I'll state again. It is NOT the amount of money we have available for transfers that is the issue right now. It is that we cannot increase our wage bill - that is FFP related.

This could take years to rectify and the main challengers for the title are hardly standing still are they ?

As i see it the only hope we have short term is to flood the first team with new young blood and see if they can fill the void.

If we can unearth a few hidden gems then perhaps we can get back into the mix in the race for top 4 because as it stands we are dropping away from being involved in that as well !!

If it was me I would move on Ozil PDQ. Give Ramsey a new contract and give him the captaincy. If Welbeck fully recovers from his horrific injury then initially offer him a short term contract to prove it.

There are two international class players that we dont have to go out and buy. Alongside them flood the first team with new young players who with all due respect cannot be any worse than what is currently on offer.

Ensure players like Bellerin are tied up on long term contracts and get rid of all of the players who are not up to it and / or are at the later stages of their career. ( We all know who they are )

Big decisions are required right now. It may well mean writing off this season and probably next but hey ho changes are needed
