It is ridiculous that a club with £200m+ in reserves can't increase its wage bill by more than £7m a year. Those rules weren't intended to prevent that, it's just that no club has those kind of reserves really. Arsenal should make a case for a special dispensation to UEFA to allow them to spend some of their reserves. Or perhaps there is some clever accounting trick to get around it. But I doubt there is any will from Kroenke to even explore that.

I have heard/read from several different media/pundits that there is money available (time will tell) for summer transfers.
It does seem strange that a club sitting on profits (so very few clubs have such kitty)cannot use it how and when they wish.
It may be that the rules try to stop creative accounting, the like of which Man City are accused of, where they pump money in artificially. Without the wage increase cap they would literally have a blank chequebook and could trample over all before in no time at all.

I suppose it's a 'big game' today but I have very little expectation of it. We could win or get heavily beaten, it's just impossible to know how we will perform in any given game atm.

Will Xhaka finally be left out? It's not even fair on him; he really doesn't have the attributes that Emery seems to want from a player.

I would like to see a return to a back 4 with Monreal at LB- push Kolasinac further forward as a left sided winger almost.
In some ways it is a game that can set us for the rest of the season on one path; win and gain confidence back and go on a run. Lose and focus almost entirely on the Europa and finally give chances to the young players (one or two at a time in the league) to show if they are ready.

BL HB SOL SM NM LT MN SK AI MO PEA -  4231   this team imo, look pretty solid and ought to create goal chances for PEA who doesn't really contribute to build up play ( if we needed that Lacca would be the choice).

I agree, we are so inconsistent it is impossible to predict what will happen. We could get tonked by five or win comfortably. I'd like to see Ozil play, we have lacked any creativity whilst he's been out and been relying on individual brilliance from the forwards to score something out of pretty much nothing. I'm going next Friday to the United match, if we lose against Chelski and go behind against Man Yoo the atmosphere will be toxic!

ramsey - a fine player - leaving for juve  - why are they playing him  - shouldn't they have someone else ie a youngster to get experience etc   - he won't be featuring in future plans so why not someone who is

or haven't they got anyone?

Good result and performance but Chelsea were shocking. Terrible re Bellerin -he's gone from poor early season to vital in the way we play, big loss.

Good result against Chelsea and much better energy levels. It begs the question, was this or the West Ham game the blip?

...and regarding the Ramsay question - the rumoured deal with Juve is £300k, considerably more than reported earlier. We would have had to pay him close to that to get him to stay.

I have no problem with the manager playing him - hasn't downed tools as yet and is a good pro. In contrast, Hazard's performances for Chelsea seem to be tailing off, but I don't think he's being played in the right position.

An excellent win on Saturday. I have to say, like the rest of you I am (uncharacteristically) pessimistic still, it did appear that Chelski just didn't turn up - not that we won because we played particularly well.

I was very impressed with Callum Chambers performance for Fulham in defeat against Spuds. I hope they recall him rather than sell him, at the end of his loan period. He looked like he has improved.

I'm going to the United game on Friday and will be the first time I've seen them live this season which would have been unthinkable in previous years, my interest is waning, I don't think it's the mediocrity after being spoilt by the Wenger early years as I was still mad keen on going back when we were rubbish in the Don Howe years and before. I think it's more the change of ground, the owner, the way that football has changed with all the money, and maybe a bit of over exposure to it is making me lose interest. I much prefer a day at the cricket in the summer, a day at a National Hunt meeting or Point to Point, or a good gig in the winter.

Pity about Bellerin, although I don't think he's instrumental to the team. In fact I've been a little disappointed with his progress, when he first broke into the first team he looked like that he would end up being one of the best fullbacks ever.

Agree with you Pixie. My interest has def waned. I put that down to getting older but your points are very valid to how i feel about football in general.

Regarding transfer windows, we will have to wait and see if we spend in the summer. We will have money to spend then, something we are not allowed to do now.

Disagree about the gigs though. If 99% of bands were playing in my back garden, i'd draw the curtains and tell them keep the noise down.Grin

We're clearly looking through the bin-ends trying to secure a couple of new arrivals but the financial position, as stated by the club, means that every deal is unnecessarily complex. It's a slight concern that you'd be prepared to take players in for six months but have no firm commitment beyond that. Kind of indicates that you haven't got complete confidence in them in the first place (and in Rodriguez's case, which I think is an exotic name floated out there to get fans interested, you'd probably be right).

Really looking forward to the game tonight. I'm expecting positivity from both sides as a replay won't be ideal for either. Will be a good test for us as United have their mojo back. Could go either way this one but United look the value at 15/8 for me.

Would prefer not to lose (particularly at home) but I am not too bothered by getting knocked out of the FA Cup. We were OK for long periods but in-game injuries disrupted us yet again.
Still the same though; good signs with plenty to work on.

We huffed and puffed but it was a brainless, tactically inept performance. The longer the game went on, the more clueless we seemed to be.

Third goal was inevitable as soon as he made the double substitution and we were lucky not to get a drubbing in the end.

Club now seems to be going steadily in reverse. I'm not convinced about Emery though he's not getting any support from the much-vaunted 'restructure' they've tried to put in place around him and which actually seems to be falling apart.
By:

When: 26 Jan 19 10:33
I'm not so sure. It's not the first tim eof late we have had the heart ripped out of the side with in-game injuries. Once were conceded two so quickly in a cup game it is hardly surprising we looked open to the counter. Imo we are not far (I know this has been said for a decade) away from a decent side. The summer will be the key and we will ALL KNOW the direction of the club under the new(ish) set up. If silent Stan puts £150m into transfers things will change on the field I have no doubt whatsoever. If he tries to do it on the cheap with £20m of sales and £50m on purchases then we will ALL KNOW he is taking the p!ss and then the support must gather around some sort of long term coherent protest/boycott. I'll keep my powder dry until the summer.

£150M transfer spend (or £500M for that matter) is no guarantee of anything.

Players valued at £70M+ are very few indeed, so however much Arsenal have to spend it will all go on players at the £30M- £50M price range, which is where they've been buying for years as it is.

Have to say don't really see the difference between Emerys style and Wenger. Emery even uses Maitland-Niles exactly the same way as Wenger did.

As Fink says, we were brainless in the way we kept making the same attacking tippy tappy passes in the Utd box without ever having an end product. [Ring any bells].

Defensively, we seem to have no tactical scheme on how we play.Again it seems like no coaching on playing as a unit has taken place. Both Xhaka and Torreira seem to be playing forward at the same time. How about one of them sitting?

I'm all for giving Emery the time he needs to adjust the squad to his way of thinking. But i was hoping to see a tactical improvement in our play by now, but afraid to say i don't see it.

Where Wenger walked into the club inheriting a great defence, Emery has walked into the club having inherited a mess, Sokratis has been Arsenal's best defender this season and Leno hasn't done much wrong and they're both his signings, but Koscielny is an injury prone 33 year old, as is Monreal, Mustafi is just terrible, Kolansinac doesn't do defending, Maitland Nile is a square in a round hole at right back and Bellierin as much as he has gotten better, he's still not good enough in 1 on 1 situations, Holding is an Emery type player and it's no coincidence Arsenal soon lost their unbeaten run not long after he was injured, but even having said that they've been conceding in almost every game since day 1, Steve Bould is more culpable imo, he's the one who's been coaching them the last few years

Then there is the Ozil problem, he can't sign new players til he gets rid of him, looks like Suarez and Perisic are both non starters because only loanees can be brought in and their clubs are not having it, they want the money up front?

Then of course there is Xhaka, he would  not stand out in Accrington Stanley's team. Surely a gooner at the end of the season, I hear Nainngolan could be a replacement.

Don't think it's fair to write Emery off after just 5 months and barely a full proper transfer window to operate in, if players are allowed settling in seasons don't see why managers can't as well. If a team is a reflection of their manager, then this team currently has two faces, and it needs at least 2 seasons before you see just Emery's, then he can be judged imo.
By:

When: 27 Jan 19 14:38
I'm certainly not wanting Emery out. He needs two seasons before we can judge him. Just saying i thought we'd be seeing the green shoots of recovery by now [tactically].

Agree about Ozil and Xhaka, but then again Emery has GX playing come wind, rain or shine. Steve Bould is there to put the cones out, has no input on defending under both Emery or Wenger.

Alot of our problems financially are down to Gazidis. Putting average players on big money. In Stans defence, he appointed Gazidis because SK knew nothing about football. Gazidis has put us in a mess regarding wages and FFP.

On the field a team can play better than the sum of its parts if they are tactically astute.
By:

When: 27 Jan 19 15:48
Gazidis lied to us when he said, Wenger would leave this club in a great position, i'm afraid Wengers legacy will be tarnished forever. If he left After 10 years, he'd be a legend, and i'm sure the club would be in a much better state.

Suarez reported as a done deal. Think that will be it for the window, though they're trying to get Nkunku over the line.

Whilst these aren't exactly earth-shattering signings (if they both go through), at least both players have worked under the manager before. It might give us more of a clue about 'style' which we all keep banging on about on here.

Smith Rowe loan move is good. Hopefully he'll at least get some experience in the Bundesliga.

Delighted that Perisic now looks to be a non-starter. With our bloated wage bill, the reported £250,000 a week and £35 million fee just doesn't look great commercial sense for a player whose best years are behind him.

I see, quite by accident, we've arrived in the Top 4, though we'll be out again at the end of the weekend. We may still be in touch at the end of the month - Chelsea have a couple of difficult fixtures, as do Man U, who have to play Leicester (away) and the Dippers. It's the hope that kills you.....

Hope Iwobi plays on the right to protect the very dodgy Lichsteiner. I think if Lich' play this as a RB and not as a RWB he would be far more solid. Sooner we played it as a 5 for the first half and look to frustrate them. We have goals up top if we can just be more solid ie concede no more than 2 !

Kompany aside, I think they had their full squad. We had 3 starters missing from our defence alone. Given this and the fact Pep has designed his team over several seasons, around his own philosophy and many a transfer window we are should not be overly down. I think Emery is doing all he can with the players he has to choose from. I think we can still be there or there abouts in the hunt for top 4 and have a good chance in the Europa. Looking forward to the coming seasons as long as Emery gets the funds he needs.
