I am puzzled why Emery cannot seem to improve our defending one iota. If he simply accepts we are what we are at the back and helps them with a DM's that SIT AND HOLD. I said we should defend deep today others thought we should press them - 5-1

While we have been making progress compared to the last two years under Arsene, our deficiencies were well and truly laid bare yesterday. Even allowing for the two charitable penalties, we weren't at the races and I don't think we defended as badly in all Wenger's time, which is a concern.

The fact remains that the club won't invest more than peanuts in players. Although the manager is clearly capable, he is going to be hamstrung by working with the scraps that we manage to pull in. Top 4 was always unlikely. That means we're going to find it even more difficult on the recruitment front.

Agree with Enp. Thought our defence capabilities would improve as the season went on. Thought the players would take time to bed into a new system, but i don't see a system - looks like they have just been dragged off the street and told to play at the back. Cry

Thought Xhaka was terrible yesterday. Didnt offer any protection to the back four and was overrun most of the game.

This is the unfortunate legacy of persisting with the old fraud for about 10 years too long.

We have a squad packed full with dross & sh!t.

To cap it all, our highest paid player can't be trusted against decent opposition.

Merci Arsene.

Can't blame Wenger for defensive frailties this season. The manager has not even tried to organise the back line as a unit and most of the goals are from mug individual schoolboy errors that no professional should make, some really ridiculous challenges and decision making. There are a lot of similarities between Wenger and Emery when it comes to the defensive side, they both seem to concentrate 100% on what our players do when we have the ball and 0% when we don't have it. Defenders aren't allowed to hoof the ball into touch when under pressure with no options and have to try to play a dodgy pass to the goalkeeper or some other player under pressure etc. Also seems to be a lack of discipline and an acceptance of poor defending as being ok or good enough for Arsenal with no punishment for it.

Didn't help having a clearly unfit Mustafi at CH yesterday. Why he started I don't know. Lichtsteiner is used to playing in a highly organised back line but you can see how unorganised ours is when you stick him in there. If Emery is another defensively ignorant manager then it's more groundhog years for us. Hopefully he will bring his own defenders in and address it.

He can't exactly rely on the sh!t he was left with.

That's my point.
By:

When: 30 Dec 18 15:03
No he can't but Leno, Sokratis and Licht weren't left by AW. The decision to play an unfit Mustafi was Emery's. Torreira messed up for one of the goals too.

You can blame the personnel but most of them aren't AW's men. More at fault is the complete lack of organisation and seeming lack of willingness to do anything about it. The vast majority of the goals we are conceding are fairly easily avoidable. Most managers would be going mental at the state of the defending and would address it.

Totally agree lurka.

There will be some on here who'll still be blaming Wenger in ten years time for the club's failures. I think the passage of time will put a different perspective on his tenure.

Let's see what we win in the next five years (I'm not holding my breath) and let's also see if our notoriously tightfisted owners are prepared to back the new manager with quality signings.

What I would say, in Emery's defence, is that isn't necessarily such an easy fix in a short space of time.

Not too long ago, some people were saying Klopp couldn't organise a defence. You could see improvements were getting made, particularly in how we were defending set pieces but every so often Lovren would fall over, Karius would do something daft or the midfield would be stranded upfield.

Yes, the big improvements have come from buying better players but there was an idea behind it all to get players who would fit a certain type of defending.

As long as Emery has a plan and a system, can school the players on it and eventually get better ones in more adept at playing that way then he'll turn it round.

Just don't expect it to happen all that quickly.

When: 31 Dec 18 12:56
Yeah, you're right fink & lurka.

Wenger has left us with a terrific squad bulging with talent.

Such is the depth that we can afford to leave £350k a week player out the squad whenever we play top class opposition.

Its a wonder he was ever sacked.

Every manager going through a bad spell of results gets stick. I am happy with a lot of what Emery has done and is doing. He has to be given time to show he can address problems that arise and that is likely to be down to 2/3 transfer windows and funds. I have real concerns about some of his decisions of late but he gets the benefit of the doubt for me until such time as he has got his players in place or has not been given the funds to do the job- if the latter he ought to resign and the support must turn 100% on the silent, absent one.

Nobody has suggested Wenger left a terrific squad or didn't deserve the sack. You seem to be blaming equally poor if not worse defending on a manager who you said was clueless on the defensive side and applying a different standard to Emery.

You can't defend just as badly if not worse with the same and some new personnel and avoid criticism. If there was any attempt at organising a previously unorganised defence you'd see it immediately just like we have on the attacking side. There hasn't been, yet. He's had 6 months to sort it out.

Mitakes like diving in, kicking Salah of all people twice in the back of the legs after letting him goal side of you in the box, putting two hands on the back of an attacker in the box (also happened against Burnley) are all things a schoolboy of 10 or 11 knows not to do and most managers would pull the player aside and tell him not to do that. Doesn't seem to be happening. We are handing goals to teams rather than them having to play well to score against us. Hopefully Emery will bring in some of his own style of defenders in the Summer and we'll see a big improvement. All of his other teams didn't defend like that so there is hope. But he clearly hasn't done anything yet to stop our defence leaking silly goals.

Emery has only signed a 2 year contract as well and hasn't hung around much longer than that at any of his clubs. That's a bit of a worry in terms of him taking 2 or 3 windows to get players in, especially if he doesn't want to extend his stay in his second year.
By:
Wesdag
When: 31 Dec 18 18:02
I think I prefer to reserve judgement until Emery has had a few windows in which to bring in his own players.

In addition, having a £350k a week show pony who only plays when the opposition is weak, can't be good for team spirit & morale.
By:
enpassant
When: 31 Dec 18 19:30
Emery will have very few high profile opportunities if he fails here. If he 'doesn't want to extend his stay' on the back of failure he will go back to small clubs and that may be the end of any hope of managing one of the big 2 in Spain or whatever ambition he has. So I cannot see him walking away, if given the funds to do the job. He may use, not being given the money needed to walk away and who could blame him if that turns out to be the case.

I really cannot believe Ozil is out for the reasons suggested above. He surely must be on his way out; if we can get him out that is.

Think all managers should start off with a 2 year deal. Save the clubs a fortune in paying up contracts when they are sacked. If Emery gets the financial backing from SK and looks to be on the verge of something good, then im sure he will be happy to extend his contract with us.

We all know we HAVE to invest hugely in the next 2 windows, so Kroenke needs to invest in Arsenal, not take the cash out for the LA Rams.
By:

When: 01 Jan 19 10:44
Yep it's not a bad idea, but the worry is only if Emery is doing really well by next year and is getting attractive offers from other clubs because most big clubs will pay him more and give him more to spend. Then you risk all his progress being undone and the most valuable asset at the club leaving, something that's been happening with us for years. With Wenger you didn't really have to worry about giving him more than two years. I doubt he's going to want to leave if he's not doing well and getting other offers, unless there are issues with transfers and Sven and him not seeing eye to eye on players. But he's probably more suited to a club like Arsenal than one of the bigger European clubs.

^ Unbalanced, lacking flair and has Xhaka in it. Niles shunted out of position again after showing where he ought to be played again(looks like that on paper anyway). Iwobi will need to be given freedom to roam in this set up or we have nil creativity in the side.
We may be fortunate it is Fulham today given this team selection 'cos it doesn't look good on paper at all.

4-1 but it was not a comfortable 4-1. Emery's first real taste of the crowd showing frustration at his decision (taking off Lacca) which given his record on subs this season seems a bit impatient of the support. Could have conceded more than the one and even that goal was poor defending across the board but one or other (or both!) Guendouzi and Kolasinac could/should have picked up the scorer. In Guendouzi's case - let him run right by and did not track him back with him at all and Kol really should have seen the danger but didn't react. Poor stuff.

Get the cheque book out please.
Possibles if perhaps difficult:
Chilwell and Maguire (Leicester) Zaha (CP) would be very handy Banega is said to be unlikely now but would have been a nice signing and a bonus (for me at least) would have been the likelihood he would have taken Xhaka's spot in the team.

"Our challenge now is to improve defensively. What’s the reason? Maybe different things. First, not with every player, we need to defend more than we did today with different injuries. Today’s the first time we could play with Koscielny, Sokratis and Mustafi - and the injury to Mustafi in the first half meant we had to change to four at the back in the second half. But we are very happy with the attacking players scoring lots of goals like today, but we need to take more balance defensively and to improve. It’s one thing for us to work on, to prepare for the second half of the season. We need to do it better in the second half of the season by working with every player in the team tactically - and that’s what we’re going to do. "

When you think about it, it's a minor miracle we've managed to get so many wins.

In an average season we'd be much closer to the top of the league, it's quite incredible that Spurs, City and Liverpool have been so consistent.

We're still miles off defensively - Emery will use the next few months to plan ahead. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if he sells 3-4 of our defenders in the summer.

I'd say our best chance of a trophy will be in the Europa League, obviously Chelsea are the team to beat.

Happy new year all.

That's a lovely shopping list enpassant, but completely ignores the financial realities at the club. The fans want us to shop at Fortnum & Mason, whilst the owners are making a beeline for Lidl.

The club simply won't spend to try and be competitive and Stan "I'm not here to win trophies" Kroenke won't sanction spending the kind of money to make up what is now a sizeable gap in quality. As long as there are enough fans coming through the turnstiles and the tv money keeps rolling in, the owners will be more than satisfied.

It's no coincidence that Emery was chosen as the successor to Wenger - a manager who built a reputation (PSG aside obv) for getting bargain-basement players to punch above their weight.

Agree with Eboue's points about the league - top three set in stone now and Chelsea and a resurgent Man U battling for fourth. Think we'll finish sixth again, albeit a little closer to the clubs above us.

Good to hear him talk about the defence. Baffling to see him start Mustafi again and he gets taken off at HT again and is now injured?! Don't think we'll be gong after established PL players or England internationals like Maguire. Couldn't afford him and there are better defenders out there for less. Ditto with Zaha. He's already been offered £17m a year from China apparently.

Harder to go unbeaten nowadays than when we did it. Record will stand for many a year.

Thought the game last night was excellent. Getting stuck in and no nonsense defending. We are light years behind those two sides.
By:

We are light years behind both ATm but I thought both were below par and a lot of the football was poor. Liverpool missed a trick in not going for the throat and played into City's hands inviting them onto them imo. Any time they had a go at City's defence they looked very shaky while liverpool were a lot more solid looking.

Declan Rice is a player I'd like to see Emery go after.

Denis Suarez: watch 'highlights' but have to say they were not inspiring at all. On the evidence from them I would hope, if we are interested in him at all, that it would be just a loan deal as he looks a nothing player from the clips. If anyone knows more about him would like to hear some views because I am concerned a little by this.

Tough cup draw. I'm guessing that the fixture will be chosen by the Beeb, possibly moving it to Monday - which means that the midweek fixture against Cardiff will also be moved?

Be interesting to see what sort of side he puts out for Round 4, assuming that some of the walking wounded are back and available. Think he'll prioritise the Ropey League above the domestic competition as it has the carrot of CL qualification.

West Ham looks difficult on Saturday. We were lucky against them at home. They've improved this season but can still throw in the odd shocker.

With the attack we have we will score. If Emery simply prioritses defending by setting us up with that in mind we win. We hand opponents goals and points by reckless tactics (and yes also individual errors).
