If England can't do better than Stirling, a man who has had a poor season and shows no sign of improving then we really are fooked.
By:
it's all guess work from Roy...back 4, Eric Dier and everyone else do their best Barcelona impersonation for 90 minutes.
By:
would of liked to see Vardy given a start, in a 4-4-2
and played the ball forward quicker |
By:
Lallana did well yday. One of the better players. Just final pass, crosses poor.

Sterling has the yips and he also has the habit of giving away needless free kicks. Had Welbeck been fit he wouldn't have played and it's debatable whether Oxlade Chamberlain would have took his place too. Andros Townsend should be in the squad.

Thought England played very well myself to a man, except Raheem. Alli is a class act.
By:
agree they played very well but were let down by the coaching
Eddie Jones cocked up selection in the egg chasing versus the Aussies but realized it and had the balls to make the (early) changes with both personnel and positional Roy didnt |

Worry is russia were so poor and we could only score 1 goal past them.Could we be the 1st brit team home.
By:
Some reports today suggest that the same team may be selected for the Wales match; if so, and not a mis-leek, then definitely bus fare home time: and even a win should result in the same journey for some/one.

How Hodgson got the England gig says it all really he had Vardy who most teams would have played but dosen't like him obviously.
Engalnd deserve to go home much like Arsenal great squad but playing the wrong players. Willshire should start ahead of Rooney. Sterling should be sent home FFS |
By:
Don't often big up England but was one of the best matches I've seen them play.....Before the game Rooney and Stirling would never have got anywhere near my squad but thought they played well and we were very unfortunate not to win the match easily.....Don't agree with going negative when the team is in such control so would have bought Vardy on instead of Milner but I'm not in charge.....they surprised me...

Sterling has come out and said to the press he feels like the most hated player in England at the moment. Confidence must be low. It's a shame as I thought a few years ago he was going to be one of our brighter talents. The whole Liverpool business seems to have some how effected him ?
By:
I dont think it is the acrimonious transfer to City that is the problem.
The lad simply inst top class , he is on a par with Shaun Wright-Phillips , just a decent player. His reputation was gained when Liverpool had Suarez in attack, maybe the one of the worlds top 3 strikers ...causing absolute panic and mayhem week in week out. Defences had to forget about Sterling from time to time ...giving him loads of space to run and dribble with space aplenty. He looked fantastic. Take the Suarez factor out and then you find out his true ability . |
By:
That's a very good assessment of Sterling.
By:
exactly, in time even the blind beggar will suss out sterlings best 3 months conincided with suarez and stevie g in peak form, never come anywhere near them heights during the rest of his career
By:
'the rest of his career' wtf are you banging on about? He's 21. At worst he's got another ten years.
He will make you all look stupid. |
By:
Sterling is the only winger in the squad (for whatever reason). Therefore he is pretty much guaranteed to play a lot in this tournament regardless of ability / form etc
By:
Surely Man city have players of quality that would have allowed him to play his best at City? A poor season by their standards and he is low in confidence consistently playing down the left, from what i've seen and i keep banging on about it, he has a poor left foot and that will almost certainly always be the case.
I'm not buying this he needs suarez idea, sturridge was getting this too and his scoring ratio has been right up there without him too when fit. I'm not comparing these 2 either, one is a prolific natural goal scorer and the other struggles to maintain composure but was getting plenty of chances and causing plenty of problems for the opposition. Personally I think Sterling is being made the scapegoat now, it's gone too far. |
By:
Rashford has the pace and trickery to play on the wing.
By:
scapegoat for what according to the looney posters, pundits, managers, players it was england best performance in a tournament for 10 years
By:
I just think Kane has been poor by his standards for the last 2 games, rubbish movement, caught offside when he should have been more aware. It's all right blaming everyone else but he has not played with a zest or intelligence needed in a tournament like this in last warm up game or the Russia game. I think looney people like Wright and Shearer also mentioned this (what would they know about forward play) but Sterling is getting all the flack.
But we can just say it's down to Sterling and not look elsewhere. A scapegoat for England failing to be clinical is what i was referring to. |
By:
OnePercenter, I'm not sure Rashford has any experience of playing out wide. Not really as simple as being able to run fast. The same could be said for Vardy and he only seems to be half the player if he isn't played up front. Wingers still need to have a basic understanding of how to play the position, especially helping out defensively, especially at this level
Ashley Young should be in the squad - he can play either wing or either fullback and would be the best set-piece taker. They could have left the redundant Bertrand at home |
By:
You just can't believe how that performance has been described. Playing a weak team weakened even further by the loss of two or three decent players, we've scored from a free-kick and our centre-forward has been completely anonymous. I think stridingedge is right - although he can't be blamed for other people's failure to provide any fodder, Kane has looked pretty listless, hardly surprising given his workload over the last eighteen months, and should be taken out of the fray. Also, if you leave your best player - Wheelchair - on the bench, you're a mug. I will give Roy the benefit of the doubt as it was the first game, but if that geezer even dreams we can win a game that matters without JW in the side, he needs shooting.

This has the makings of a classic thread, a sterling goal and a couple of assists

We are playing Wales next, even Joe Hart has a good chance of scoring.

sterling has always been over hyped like most ordinary young england players (alli, rashford, etc.) but most get found out eventually.
england can never accept defeat and always look for somebody to blame (remember beckham effigies being burned) so somebody will always be pointing a finger rather than admit the team just isn't good enough. it does surprise me that roy is picking players who aren't even first team players, and players who couldn't handle pressure, instead of players who showed determination, ability and battling qualities all season. better to pick players in form than just pick your mates and a few media picks. after all, that same media will turn on you the instant it all goes wrong. |
By:
Smallings defending had a lot to do with the score line too.

I was at a party on Saturday night and was slagging Sterling off all night. Not one of the dozen people watching concurred. Good to see I'm not going mad! Hopefully he'll play this week as I've backed the draw!
By:
Sterling should man up play a good game and the fans will love you.Why can't our players have a german or italian mentality.
By:
roy loves losers so sterling likely to have a long run in the team
likewise the nivea boys, more bothered about beards, barnets, tatts and complexion than playing football vardy will get his chance but not till we are on the brink of elimination |
By:
I reckon Rooney will be pushed up into the left hand forward position and probably Wilshere will come into midfield so Dier can go more man to man v Bale.
As for Sterling, the over-reaction on here after one game continues to not surprise at all. I fully accept I would say this but I'd start Sterling-Sturridge-Lallana as a front 3. They know each others' games well and it has echoes of 18 months ago when it was Sterling-Coutinho-Lallana as a mobile front 3 for Liverpool which looked really good. Sturridge is our best striker. He just is. He's better than Kane, Vardy and anyone else you'd care to mention. Lallana is just a great team player but is also talented, can create and get on the end of things. Had 2 good efforts saved v Russia. And while Sterling is being pilloried the lad still has amazing pace and great ability and can turn things in an instant. For all the talk of Sterling here (how we love our scapegoats) I thought Kane was very poor. I'm not overly concerned if he gets another start (in fact I couldn't give a toss really) but if I was picking the team he wouldn't be in it. |
By:
rumour is that roy is starting the same team as started in the first match
By:
Roy will stick with his original team as he hasn't a clue tactically, JW and Vardy should be on the team. Sterling is woeful yep he is fast but thats it, a young Theo now where did that go wrong.

PoP
The trouble with playing both Sterling and Lallana is that neither of them have sufficient end product. If the other frontman has a nightmare, as Kane did the other night, we're in $hit street. The Man City fans who've watched him all season are less than impressed with Sterling for all the same reasons that people on here want him out of the team. He is most effective as an impact sub as in the recent friendly. Whoever he drops, I agree that Sturridge must surely start tomorrow as he is the one with the composure in front of goal. If Roy suggests starting with the same team he should be sacked on the spot. |
By:
how come you support England Miss Wales a bit ironic but would agree Sturridge better than Sterling
