The Reds finished seventh last season and failed to qualify for continental participation, and the Spurs boss believes that has been key to their Premier League charge this term. Sherwood told reporters: "People say that if you have less games you have more chance of emulating Liverpool this year. "The extra games this season have meant we've ended up playing 12 more games than Liverpool. They are challenging for the title because they didn't have the Europa League. "It is certainly helps when you have a whole week to prepare for games." Liverpool are currently top of the division, and victory in their remaining four games will see them crowned as champions for the first time since 1990. |

Rafa Benitez has backed Liverpool to seal a return to the UEFA Champions League this season. In his column for the Independent, Benitez said that Brendan Rodgers’ side have one major advantage over their rivals. The Spaniard who spent six years in charge at Anfield says his old club are in a great position to secure a coveted top four finish because they do not have the distraction of European football. Benitez guided Liverpool to Champions League success in 2005 and went close to guiding the reds to League triumph four years later, finishing second to rivals Manchester United by four points. “I think it will be the season when my old club Liverpool will finish in the top four, and get back to experiencing the great Anfield Champions League nights which were very special to me, said Benitez”. “I think there will be a changing of places because Liverpool coming fourth will mean Manchester United finishing outside of the Champions League. “It is hard to talk confidently about these things in a crazy British season, of course, but Liverpool will have one important advantage when January is over. “That is time. They don’t have to play in Europe in the months ahead and that is a big advantage when the others are distracted by those commitments. I don’t mean it is not good to be competing and pressing to win in the Premier League and Europe, too.” |

Seem to remember Chelsea winning the league with 95 points in 2005, along with winning the League Cup, & getting to the CL semi-final.

Doubtless Man Utd will be 1/20 for next season's title. Chelsea will have a sh!te season because they have a Manager who is losing the plot, and the cossack will ship him off once again.

earlier in the season we were in a 'false' position because we had had easier fixtures apparently then narrow defeats at city and chelsea were said to have proved this correct
we have not lost a game since. |

Swings and roundabouts though isn't it. By not being in Europe they miss out on the revenue of CL or a Europa run- if Liverpool win the league they will have done it on the smallest budget of any title winning side in a very long time.

Eh? So if West Brom won the title it is devalued because they didn't play in Europe??
It adds value imo. He's taken a team that finished 7th and put them 1st. I'd like to see the other so called top managers take Spurs and do the same thing. |

anyone care to answer the question that has been asked on here a couple of times, who were the last team to win the premiership that were not in europe that season ? I assume with it being a big advantage it must be recent so you should not have to rack your brains (although I suspect there is a couple on here without one).

16 November 2013 Kenny Dalglish believes Liverpool and Southampton are benefiting from not being involved in European competition this season.
