Very good points raised by AyersRock - statistics by themselves are meaningless - unless you have seen the players yourself then it is a pointless excercise discussing who was definitively the best - I did see Pele in 1970 and I stand by my view that he is and was the best of all but everyone has their own opinion

I have watched most of the WC 1970 games and today there is much more footage of Pele available than in 1970.

We are able to make a better judgement than ever before.

Pele was the greatest because most people haven't heard of Garrincha.  Best was also pretty close.  Maradonna cannot be the greatest because he is a cheating Argie. Messi is PDFG but Pele is the greatest because he is.  I think that settles this discussion!

Well i'm not going to deny that Ronaldinho and Eto'o were great players but it's undeniable that Barca's success reached new levels once Messi appeared

Biscuit did Messi, Goofy and Eto'o play in the same side for a season?  I think they did and were the most exciting side I have ever seen if they did, apart from Brazil 1970 of course and Brazil 1982 oh and Milan of Gullit, Van Basten and Frank R,  tippy tappy is not great football, skilful no doubt but not exciting.

Spain are so above the rest of the world in terms of success at present as they play together each week for barca and Madrid and the rest of the teams don't, barca will win nothing without messi they are a shadow off themselves

They played together for about 3 seasons but in the last season Ronaldinho was injured quite a bit and was shipped out when Guardiola took over in 2008

It probably helped that they had the services of Casillas, Ramos, Alonso, Javi Martinez, Silva, Mata, Navas, Torres, Soldado plus the likes of Villa, Fabregas and Jordi Alba before they joined Barca.

barca without messi are pretty average in terms of champions league last 8, as we saw last season, so the success of Spain just goes to show how much higher the standard the CL is compared to a world cup, which is logical given the higher concentration of top players/team and therefore rubbishes the "you've got to win a world cup argument"

bayer leverkusen v sociedad maybe?

surely thats too exalted company for a lowly international fix like Ger Arg

Maybe I am pushing the envelope too far with
anderlecht v olympiakos?

Ok
time to show my hand
will you permit me
Neftchi Baku v Skenderbeu Korce?

Mr Rider

Spain have a massive advantage over the other teams in that the majority of the squad come from one team and transfer their system to the intl scene. The other countries dont have that by a and large. It is a huge advantage for them.

Added to that they play inferior opposition than Barcelona and the other top CL teams come up against.

This argument that the Spanish players in the team have proved they are good enough without Messi is nonsense. they dont dominate the ball Barcelona have for a start.

Spanish teams have spanish players, English teams don`t. Thats why Spain have been successful

Peles 3 main highlights involve him having a free header saved, going round the goalie and missing and shooting from the halfway line and er ..... missing

Nobody will ever touch Diego apart from maybe Bryan Robson circa 1982

nobody will ever be able to really judge how good pele was, because he chose never to play club football at the highest level.

...well, someone had to say it.
