Samaras can do it on his day. A good squad player

Samaras was the man who turned the seson around at Ibrox last new year with a magnificent performance, when we were going through a very poor patch, he's frustrating but the manager rates him, so back him when he's on.
Stokesy flying lets hope he keeps it up and becomes the player evrybody at Aresenal thought he was going to be, It's in his own hands. (what a chance he has been given and he knows it) Hooper's still young too, a victim of the parkhead hype mob, he still has an important part to play. We've needed a centre half since BACK TO Martin O'Neil's (legend) later days in charge. Big Mick played his joker for a few years and scored some important goals too, but was never the answer. We must look to not embarrass ourseves in Europe at least. Hail Hail |

By:
ofcourse back sammy when on id back hitler in celtics team.he may have scored the 2 at ibrox but he also missed that pen at ibrox which would all but have guaranteed us the league.but thats all in the past.
he just doesnt fit in this teaM IMO.need a big guy like him who can header/release ball faster etc |
By:
all valid points he's so frustrating, but i'd always play him against them
I just think he is the one player rangers management and players would be delighted not to see on the team sheet, he's capable of ripping them apart singlehandedly when it all clicks, apart from the derry pele, we have nobody else with that in their locker. |

Good morning fellow bhoys, glad to see thread started well with some good points raised on the merits of our current squad. My own opinion of samaras is he is probably more than any other player in recent years the most frustrating player with being unstoppable in games ,to looking like a has been junior player.Hail Hail.

Der (h)un have started a similar thread, but I am in no way suggesting you should gatecrash
it and noise 'em up ![]() |

Looking forward to going to the John Thomson story at the Kings Theatre in Glasgow early September. Should be good on the eightieth anniversary of his sad death of the young goalie aged only 22.
By:
could do without all these injuries if we are to have a good run in europe.
By:
that john thomson story at Kings should be great
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tOjIFICHWY First Celtic song i learned, along with some folk numbers sean south, we're all off to Dublin, great memories. The greatest club in the world. |

Dont know much about the swiss side, but need to put in big performance over the 2 legs to ensure victory.Been far too many slip ups in the last decade when playing so called inferior European sides.Def need professional performance and no excuses.
By:
Good decision by the club to include the Sion game with your season ticket, big crowd vital on European nights, its our 12th man at home in these games.
By:
There will be nothing easy about playing sion. We have a bad record against swiss teams. Didnt they knock us out of europe before. I would have preferred to play them away first. As said before samaras peno miss cost us the league, 3 goals for the season & rangers had worked him out after the new years game. It's not hard to work him out. Beat him to every 50/50 ball & he will stand there with his hands up & let the player who beat him run past. He should never be played again.

As i previously posted mac most infuriating player i have watched in recent times at Celtic park.
By:
samaras was excellent in the 3-0 game as well, albeit against a very poor rangers team,
By:
Agreed malay, but the good games are few and far between for his wages and length of contract he is on now.
By:
i think he does more than ok in the big games,
his goal ratio last couple of years i cant defend, even wayne biggins done better, but i watched him in the world cup for greece and he was not out his depth in any shape or form, the manager sees him every day, he knows him as an individual, and felt the contract was justified, personally i think you would get decent money for him if he was sold, just my opinion lads |
By:
could not agree more malay, seen him play for Greece a few times and looked very very good.Remember him playing a unreal pass splitting the defense for the winning goal to get Greece in the World cup.

Pure p1sh I'm afraid ![]() The Samaras missed penalty alone did not cost Celtic the league, and it is quite ludicrous to make this assertion. Celtic's 5 SPL games prior to the New Year match at Castle Greyskull were as follows: Dundee Utd at home: drew 1-1 after the arabs scored in the 3rd minute of added time. Inverness at home: drew 2-2 after being 2-0 in front. Kilmarnock at home: drew 1-1 requiring a late equaliser. St Johnstone at home: won 2-0 but only taking the lead in the 91st minute, and scoring again with last kick. Motherwell at home: won 1-0 with the skipper sent off in last minute and suspended for ibrox game 4 days later. So, 5 home games with 15 points obviously on offer, and Celtic managed to take 9 - this can logically be argued to have had a hugely more significant impact on Celtic winning the title or not, surely?? Celtic went to mordor on the back of this disappointing tally from the home games, and if you recall, very few people fancied them to get anything at New Year. Samaras was absolutely pivotal in the gaining of 3 points this day, and actually put Celtic in the driving seat for the Championship, as the confidence gained here, carried forward into the next batch of quick-fire Celtic v Derhun games. Fast forward to Inverness, when a win would have made Celtic long odds-on chances to be Champions; Inverness somehow managed to lose their flymo in the run up to the game, and Butcher had his team of hammer throwers fired up. Celtic on the other hand turned up seemingly expecting to win; Incredibly went with a 4 man mid which included 2 lightweights in Commons and Maloney, leaving Ki on the bench, and as a unit had a complete bottle crash, thereby gifting the advantage to rainjurz, who under the Cardigan, were most unlikely to let this chance slip, which they evidently did not. There you have it, several plausible explanations as to why Celtic did not win the title last season, and not one mention of a missed penalty anywhere to be seen. ![]() ![]() |
By:
The home form prior to the new year was pivotal to the weakness the team showed not winning the league and the less said about the inverness performance the better,it was dire.
By:
How anyone who watches Celtic games can defend samaras is beyond belief. How could anyone offers a striker who scores 3 goals a year, a 4 year contract is beyond belief. That penalty miss was the turning point of the season. If he had scored it the league was wrapped up. Fact. He scored a goal a few years ago against Moscow & said dont call me a hero. He is no hero, he is a joke.
By:
think his record is 5 in last 55 games.
By:
If you are referring to me, then I have not made any rigorous defence of Samaras, and I was not involved in the negotiations that resulted in him being offered a contract extension.
I merely pointed out that his contribution to Celtic winning the game at new year, was absolutely critical, and whether you love or loathe the guy, this is utterly irrefutable. All the dropped points at Celtic Park prior to this game, added to the woeful performances in the "in your face" games Celtic lost at Motherwell and Inverness, are unquestionably a massive contribution towards their inability to take the championship last season. At this point it should be pointed out that rainjurz found a consistency after snatching the League Cup, and allied to Smith's nous at getting his team over the line, Celtic were in the end undone by a helluva lot more than just a missed penalty. If Samaras had scored the penalty that day, how can you say with 100% certainty that Celtic might not have contrived to concede a late equalizer in any case? Many factors combined to determined the outcome of the title race, and to blame it all on one man's penalty miss, is palpable nonsense. |
By:
Lets move on lads, the full squad will have it's part to play,
of course samaras had to be offered a new contract, he's a saleable asset with plenty years football in front of him. |
By:
good start to the thread Bhoys the secret to keeping it going as zipi said is to blank out completely any abusive interruptions take on board what constructive critics may have to say and to totally ignore the likes of IT67
