Tad harsh elis i think , same criticizing that shot would have been agog at the 6 a few balls earlier , without " brainless " they'd probably be 4 or 5 down for 70 or 80 runs less with a lessened chance of winning the game which is the mindset with Stokes not contemplating draws.
That said the draw still a big player in this one. |

There is perhaps something of the Sehwag in Brook - in terms of his batting inducing more dropped catches than others.
Sehwag Test chances were dropped at a rate of 37%, waaaaayyyyy above the typical drop-rate in the low-20%s. Be it the harder hitting, or the pace of scoring making the perceived importance of a chance more significant (and thus 'grasped' at a little more than a normal chance), or likely a combination of both - I think Brook has a similar voodoo in play. Only makes him even more dangerous to opponents. |

Damn man,
I am getting close to laying of some India to green out! The lad played well and is clearly a good player but that is twice and he has a problem. It is not hard to overcome but you should not be getting out like that at Test level. India could have done with Kuldeep today and tomorrow. Why play Shardul if you don’t trust him with a hard ball? Hard decision but I would bring in Druv Jurel and Kuldeep for Suhardsan and Shardul. |

India still in the driving seat with a decent start to their second innings and England have to bat last on 4th and 5th day. Draw still very possible if time is lost through rain tomorrow. If India had caught Brook early in his innings it would be game over already.

whispering, ive followed your post on this test , my position now is ENGLAND green 105 india red 150 draw green 920 , for me india wont declare tomorow , but will they be able to bat the full day, i reckon draw is decent odds at moment

Did you miss my post to say I switched my draw green onto India? I messed up by not buying England at 10+ -15. Big mistake. Compounded it by laying draw too heavy at 4.9 instead of well sub 3 but green in India and draw now. It is going to be tough batting last on this and it might rain on Tuesday. |

Lawrence was the first blck guy BORN in England to play for them. Basil was born in South Africa obviously.
There were at least 3 Asians who played before that,Ranjitsinchi,Duleepsinchi and the Nawab of Pataudi. None of them exactly peasants. I have a feeling there was a man of mixed race who played pre WW1 but can't think of him and not sure. He would probably have passed as white anyway. |

I am worried about the draw Hunt,
It is cool, probably no rain and India should be able to bat the day pressure of the third not withstanding. Plenty of rain about tomorrow from the graphics. Much pre start then a lot magically missing while raining all around then after lunch plenty again. It might be muggy and warmer tomorrow which will aid swing. My hope for my bet at least is India bat us out of it or at least bat most if not all day. I have some coverage on the draw but will even it out with India green and maybe if necessary buy back England if they go long again. Big mistake not buying England at 10+ on day 2, apart from that really enjoying the cricket and my bet has been green most of the time |

I was mulling that over that. I knew about the Indian fella’s ….. Upper Class of course. I knew Dolly was Cape Coloured not white, not black, not sure what, not brown but coloured not Indian whatever that means. Now I know about some Butchers I think or do I. So Roland Butcher possibly born in WI. Mark Butcher not black, not white, not coloured whatever that means not sure where he was born. DeFreitas? Possibly born in WI? Been a couple of others… a Kent lad? Father played for WI. Really interesting and weird conversation. It is also one of the thingsI love about cricket Class us a leveller over “ race “ ( I am assuming they don’t mean human ). Even in Jamaica they had clubs for black I.e. darker skinned players and lighter skinned players. I read Beyond a boundary by CLR James reputedly one of the three best sports books ever written. It is a fascinating and insightful read. Ironically a lot of it comes down to our Christian upbringing and God rather than Karl Marx! Talking Dolly what a chapter of shame from Doug Insole and the heirarchy. We digress suppose we get back to the match but first black born Englishman to play for England is extremely interesting too. Also the fella from Plymouth / Portsmouth who was selected for Engkand then dropped when they found out he was black! What a story that is too. |

It looks as though Roland Butcher is acknowledged to be the first black cricketer to play for England. I don't remember him looking at all black but as he was a cousin of Basil's he must have been ( though obviously of mixed race ). I don't think it was mentioned at the time.
D'Olveira was indeed a Cape Coloured. Under apartheid there were 4 categories,white,black,coloured(Black/white mixed race) and Asian. The South Africans only picked whites of course. I don't think there was a word said about the 1960 tour side,but I was too young to be politically aware. There were strong demonstrations in 1965 however. |

Never quite get the " first black person " to do anything , my response would be to ask who was the first white person.
How do they expect to rid themselves from thinking differently about colour when they come up with this nonsensical statistic which appears across all walks of life. Madness in my view and a question that should never be asked. |

DeFreitas was born in Dominica but Hayden this is why I guess it comes up.
DeFreitas sought and in October 1995 obtained legal redress when a July 1995 article appearing in the Wisden Cricket Monthly questioned the commitment of players of foreign origin to the England cricket team. DeFreitas, England and then Derbyshire colleague Devon Malcolm, and others, the writer opined, were not "unequivocal Englishmen". According to subsequent recollection this recalled typecasting of Malcolm and Gladstone Small by politician Norman Tebbit in 1990. DeFreitas recalled that the writer "suggested [we] were interlopers. That was so out of order, so wrong". DeFreitas and Malcolm, issued writs for defamation; DeFreitas settled outside of court while Malcolm accepted libel damages through the High Court.
