Did toy with Pak at 5s earlier but would have deepened my position on them so didn't. Shame really. I think first innings scores will be very close now and that's very much in Pakistan's favour with a dry turning wicket; far better spinners and England to bat last. Suppose there's still theoretically enough batting for a significant first innings lead but just don't see it with effectively 5 down and the ball spitting.

England ought to win from here but it wouldn't be surprising for a small to medium England lead to turn into a tricky little chase on a deteriorating pitch day 4/5. This is effectively 5 down and a wicket missing second innings plus only two quicks.

If England bat for 45 overs tomorrow they will have a lead of around 125 / 150 which would be decisive. Should they only lead by say up to 75 then it is still all to play for as the pitch deteriorates on the final 2 days - I think the draw is just about out of the equation & England must be the call at close today

I don't think Pakistan are by any means a 9/2 shot and England look too short at 1.53 although they do have the initiative now. I am sticking with Pakistan. may buy some more tomorrow and then will hope to green day 4 even day 5. All to play for in this match carpe diem Rodney |

FWIIW, I rated Taylor after his performances in the last Ashes in Oz. Really surprised he was dropped and took so long to get back in the Eng team.

i can come up with all sorts of apologist reasons for leaving him out during the summer, and the way he was sidelined after doing nothing wrong against a very good south african attack in 2012. I don't agree with any of them, but i can accept that there are some, and those in charge think differently.
but taylor should have been playing in the UAE from the get go. his footwork and play against spin is too good to leave him out: stokes, bairstow and buttler with no ali as a safety net is a flat footed and vulnerable 5,6,7 against spin. |

never played in a ashes series pxb. this is his test return after being dropped for no reason after the 2012 sa tour in england.
but his one day performances against some very good bowling show that he's got it. but his county form was good enough apparently for him to be selected straight away this summer; despite being one of our best batsmen during the world cup. he's another one who's clearly pissed in someone's tea; screwed the wrong person's wife. |

He played some one dayers in Oz before the world cup and during - did pretty well amongst the wreckage.

Wondered where the Ashes came in to it and was about to look it up! Obviously I have enough respect for pxb's opinion that I check even when I know he's making something up.
Agree with DS's post a few up about apologist reasons. Taylor has had a tough few games in test cricket and it's hardly surprising that he failed against a rampant SA as the number 1 England side began to fall apart. He did fail though, so there were reasons to drop him and one can just about stretch that to him failing to come back until this tour, especially as he could hardly buy a county run this year until the back end of the season. Not to have played him all series against good spinners though, in favour of Buttler, or even Bell or Bairstow, was just crazy. |

Only had 3 innings against South Africa.
KP was adamant he was 'too small' to play international cricket and the hierachy seemed to agree. Taylor's belief and dynamism against spin is as good as we've seen from an Englishmen for some time. Thorpe comes to mind but not too many. The fact that it took Buttler's drop in form to get Taylor into this team does not reflect well on the selectors. |
