temps around country pushing 10 degrees mid January

i would normally expect icy winds , maybe a little snow , certainly maybe half that temp at least most of month

10 degrees wouldn't be out of place sometimes in summer tbh , average for most areas would be around 4/5 degrees

most of the planet will be on fire or underwater but America will have a nice bank balance

Prince Charles hit the headlines in 2010 by saying that the ice caps would be melted in 7 years.

Wrong again!

Ten years later he gets into the news peddling the same stuff, but this time backed by an hysterical 17 year old child.

But instead of laughing them both off the stage, the public hang on to their every word.

The capacity found in most people to be led up the garden path is astonishing.
And that's including those who consider themselves to be well educated.

terry ...so my flowering fuscias and lavender are just an optical illusion ?   the grass hasn't properly stopped growing

i normally experience the coldest nights in the UK at sea level  ...average normally down to 2  , daytime is normally 8

it's been  around 9 in the day and 4 at night on average this winter  ,1 or 2 degrees higher  ... and the same the last few winters and an almost complete absence of frost .

no nights of below freezing at all  or snow at any point

By:
hello :-)
When: 23 Jan 20 16:11
no i didn't terry that's the highest , mostly in Scotland in fact which you would expect to be colder by far

been like this last few winters in general , our climate /seasons are definitely changing

only see the odd nite of frost , and i expect our local spring ecosystem to awake far earlier this year

hello ...Scotland is similar to England in winter  ...it's only at  high ground where it gets chilly  ...i havent't looked  yet but as a betting man i would wager that Canterbury gets colder nights than Shetland  in January

in the past any cold went east to west in winter  ,not north to south that much  ....  it has changed a bit of late  because of climate change .
By:
Coachbuster
When: 23 Jan 20 16:19
lfc ...well it has been stable for decades and decades .... until this decade .

i'm not really that concerned about Roman times tbf ...that was a way back  and there would have been a gradual change
By:
lfc1971
When: 23 Jan 20 16:21
Its natural that the climate will change, its bound to happen, if it didn't or never did that would be remarkable
And proof that something was wrong in the measuring .

should have said Bury St Edmunds or even Lyon right down in Southern France  (and not Canterbury) ,those two def colder than the  scottish towns   ..i would have lost that bet on Canterbury by around half a degree  ... was being a bit ambitious there , Kent too much gulf stream influence ....
By:
lfc1971
When: 23 Jan 20 16:29
I mean its patently absurd to think that the climate will remain unchanged, history alone tells us it doesn't
Its not a possibility considering that we are are at the mercy of the elements, the Sun , the wind and rain and snow.....

the result of climate change as well is more extreme heat in summer in the med basin  and more rain and cooler weather in countries  like the UK  in summer

So is it global warming, cooling or a bit of everything?

(Asking for a friend)
By:
hello :-)
When: 23 Jan 20 16:47
previous events like climate , extinction happened over 100s or 1000s of years

current one is escalating over a 30 year period

Look at Himalayan ice caps , losing a quarter of ice over last few decades , but rate has doubled since 2000

serious problems ahead for region who depend on water , billions of people will be impacted due to lack of flowing water from caps

not many parts of world without some kind of climate related effect looking to future
