I do not see it akabula...sorry, enlighten me.
She was a well off women earning good money, she tried to evade tax, as others do of course. |

People like Lammy constantly refer to it.
It's like a comfort blanket for them. But nobody alive was concerned with it whether slave or slave owner. It was acceptable at the time to most people but more and more began to see the evilness of it and it was stopped. To think that damages should be paid to dependants is a nonsense |

Sorry Ebul I thought you were having a go at Aluns post. My apologies.

Black people living in Africa were a lot better off as they were free people.
'black people in America today are better off for what their ancestors did' ^ Yes, but so is everybody else: For America to become economically viable at all it was necessary to clear forests, drain swamps, dig rocks out of the ground to clear the way for farming. And when all that was done you needed them to pick cotton etc Back breaking work. No one in the world had enough money to pay the wages people would have demanded to do all that. So you had to threaten to kill people to make them do it. Otherwise it would not have been done. And so there would have been no huge profits for 19th century capitalists to invest in railways, telegraphs etc. Without slavery we could still be in the horse and cart era |

alun2005 29 Jul 19 23:51 The most important thing is that slavery was abolished in America over 150 years ago. Precisely NONE of the African-Americans (i.e. Americans) currently alive have ever been slaves. Every one of them has had an equal opportunity to live freely and progress in the world's greatest country, and we must be glad for that. Even so, we still bizarrely see people trying to play the victim of crimes committed centuries before they were even born. The ultra-privileged person below was jailed for tax evasion, but laughably in court tried to put the blame on slavery. Quite possibly the most ludicrous 'defence' or 'mitigation' ever offered up in a court. That nonsense alone merited three months. Every one of them has had an equal opportunity to live freely and progress in the world's greatest country This shows the agenda of the poster or just plain ignorance. I doubt it was the latter! |
|
By:
Whispering please don't start the 'agenda' nonsense when anyone posts something that could be about someone who isn't white,it's a bigger subject than I first knew when starting the thread there's a few posters who are making good points which I've never heard and others might be interested as well.
You haven't got a monopoly on non-white censorship it's a free country nobody has posted anything remotely unsavoury if you think they have that's your racial sensitivity issue. |

There were slaves (serfs) in Russia right up until the revolution , and then things got worse
|
|
By:
As with slaves serfs could be bought , sold or traded , abused with no rights over their own bodies , could not leave the land they were bound to , could not marry without permission
|
|
By:
These of course were white Europeans ( it happened in England and throughout Europe ) although as far as I know none of us today complains
|

What’s Lammy on about ?
I don’t know |

denzil trying to justify slavery....a new low even for you denzil……………….get back under your rock
|

By:
Yes....trying to absolve all slave traders from blame.
|
|
By:
I think we can take it as a given that the slaves taken to the Americas much preferred their life back in Africa
than being a slave. The other side to this question that black people in the Americas have a better life than their cousins in Africa so should be grateful that their ancestors were taken as slaves, is very tricky Denzil? As others have said, it no way would justify the slave trade, that was just awful. |
|
By:
There are problems in the United Sates today between white and black people which is very sad.
I do not think referring back to the slave trade helps tbh. No white American alive today has ever owned slaves and white people are not responsible for what their ancestors did. There is a need here to look forward not back. It happened, it was bad, it was stopped. |
|
By:
Many ludicrous points of view on here. The best thing for the indigenous population is to leave them alone. It's their life, their way of life and should be their choice what they do. Obviously some caveats but as a general rule let them be.
|
|
By:
So many of you sound like missionaries who knew that savages needed to be converted to Christianity. They needed it so much they all got the flu or the pox, had their assets nicked and all but got wiped out.
|
|
By:
Denzil your OP is extremely odd and it isn't in the least bit surprising that people think it is in effect a "Should slaves have been grateful?" dog whistle.

What kind of lives did slaves have before they were snatched for the slave trade?
Hunting, fishing, shagging, a few ritual dances. |

The prospects for development were limited until, as Charlie points out, the missionaries of Christ landed.

Whilst ancestors of the African enslaved have gone on to feature heavily in the modern world.
The prospects for development were limited until, as Charlie points out, the missionaries of Christ landed. Was hoping someone could post evidence of what life was like before then we'd be able to show how far or not Africa had gone before the slave trade and will be able to determine how people of African descent have had their future lives improved by the suffering of those that were enslaved. Instead of the usual more should be made of the future positives that came from slavery as the wrongs have been fully recognised. His current missionaries are partly responsible for the HIV epidemic. I'd believe it have got a link to a paper on the tropical disease in Africa and the slave trade can imagine there'd be plenty crossovers back and forth. |
|
By:
Big place is Africa, would be quite a diverse range of lifestyles in different places. If us westerners hadn't discovered it until now I suppose in many ways we'd be more sympathetic to their way of life, although $$$ and development would probably still win out.
Wrt HIV, I mean in modern times, the 11th commandment "Thou shalt not wear a johnny". |

Slightly off topic there's a school of thought which (before I knew the extent of drugs in sport and for how long) I subscribe to is that the genes from the enslaved who survived the starvation, exhaustion, torture and disease were passed on and are superior to non Africans hence the sporting achievements especially in Athletics and boxing which is a definite positive.
|
|
By:
*physically superior

To nobody in particular but is anyone saying that our European way of life is better than what would have been the Arfican way of life? If so you're a nutter. You're just trying to judge life by what you know.

Have an interest in how humans can develop their immune and metabolic systems after being subject to extreme stress and/or illness.
I had an aunt who died aged 108 with all her faculties although poor eyesight who got the Spanish flu last rights the lot but survived without ever being ill again (so they say) and her age is way outside the usual age range of the rest of the family. |

Forgive me if I'm wrong but are you saying slavery was a good thing?
|
|
By:
I trust you've read the thread below from the 637PM post and there's nothing that says enslaving people and selling them is a good thing on this thread the debate is the how's,why's,before after positives and negatives,I'm putting across some positives which I think more should be made of:
