I was away fishing with my mate recently, he's a diabetic and whilst checking his own he tested mine. The reading was '6'
By:
anxious I'll tell you why what is considered to be the normal range for blood pressure has come down.
It's the same reason they dropped the safe level of Cholesterol down from 6 to 5. It's so they can get more patients and dole out more drugs. I see that the level for pre diabetes is now over 5.5. That used to be over 6. as well. |
By:
You could do with dropping a few pounds then mate, I'd suggest you'll be less pre-diabetic if you do.
I lost a stone (went from 14 to 13) in about 4 weeks, just by being a bit sensible. (Slightly smaller dinner, "No, I won't have that extra sandwich", soup instead of kebab, porridge instead of fry up or beans on toast... that sort of thing) How long after food was it 6? What was his? I had my dinner an hour ago, I just tested mine. It's 9.3 but that will drop to about 6 or so in the next hour. |

He was 10.5 I think.. he had just got up. I'd only had coffee and ciggie
By:
Yes i have seen these sorts of things too crippen , im not tottaly convinced by either the medical profession or some alternative views
By:
Cholesteral is cholesteral now they say we have good and bad cholesterol what is that all about
By:
The closest thing to a reasonable post you've written, crippen.
Except despite the 'illuminati' style reasoning, the reason for the figures changing is to get people onto diets in the hope of relieving some of the pressure on the slaughtered NHS, prediabetes, high cholesterol is a convenient excuse. The cost of these drugs is minimal and nearly everyone diagnosed is not given drugs. |
By:
That has always been the case, anxious.
HDL and LDL, ask the Doc (or look it up) |
By:
Cholesterol is produced by the liver.
Again hereditary factors play a part, but not much is made of this because people tend to give up when this is suggested. |
By:
The usual blood test is taken after fasting.
Take it the same time in the morning before breakfast. If you're getting readings around 6 with your weight Aspro, you can easily pull that back. |
By:
What about coffee.. is that permissible?
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'll start working on the weight immediately |
By:
I think as in most things moderation is the key , like in life when you go the extremes you find a problem
By:
Especially drinking anxious... screwed myself right up with that. Thankfully I found it easy to quit
By:
Smaller meals and portions is usually a good idea
By:
I read recently that it takes around 5 minutes before your brain acknowledges food in your stomach. It said eating slower helps because you don't push too much in there before the brain works it out. Any truth to this do you think?
By:
Alcohol in moderation is fine i think , the problem is what do people regard as moderation
By:
Mine wasn't moderation... long story but gladly behind me now
By:
You want coffee, have coffee. And, yes. Smaller plate, smaller spoon might help, but mostly just have whatever you want, only less of it is what worked for me.
Anxious is absolutely correct. OK - Regarding diabetes. I'm not going to spend the evening battling Crippen in a forum medical Phone-in. It's a question of what or who you want to believe: A diabetic, with personal experience with specialists in the field, who lives with a highly qualified health professional. or Someone preaching some self-promoting, book-writing, American with a discovery only HE uses for a worldwide disease and a couple of people who believe his guff. |

On cholesterol:
The good cholesterol is the HDL. The bad cholesterol is the LDL. But the bad cholesterol comes in two parts as well, it has a good part and a bad part. They don't test for this, they simply take LDL as being all bad. So you might have all good LDL and are being treated for nothing. or you could have VLDL which is the bad bit. Alcohol produces VLDL along with fructose, which is why drinking is bad for your heart and eating loads of sugar doesn't do your heart any good either. |

In truth Study, tonight it has been quite a sensible and enlightening conversation between us all. Good tips from both you and Dr C (medication aside)

I'll tell you what I think about losing weight.
By the way I don't have any problem at all with weight gain at all on a starch based diet. Food with the addition of sugar is simply too delicious these days. If you can quit sugary foods the cravings will go away, and it becomes much easier to lose weight. That's anything with added sugar. |
By:
I had this conversation with the nurse I was booked in with to discuss the pre-diabetes. I don't eat a lot of sweet stuff; chocolate can remain in my fridge for months! My only sweet vice (aside from sugar in savoury products) is sugar in my coffee. I'd much rather have a sausage roll
By:
Don't keep chocolate in the fridge!
By:
Why?
By:
Has anybody read the Newcastle diet i think this is one that indicates low carbs , ie not eating as much bread , potatoes , rice etc , white flour .
By:
Ideal temperature for chocolate is 16-18 degrees.
Cold, like hot can cause bloom (separation of cocoa solids), not that this will affect the taste, just the look. Also the cold chocolate goes from mouth to stomach without you getting enough of the taste from it if it's too cold, as it doesn't get the chance to melt enough in the time you're eating it. |
By:
Ahhh, I've got you there Study. As I said, I seldom eat chocolate but in my fridge now is a (small) bar of Galaxy, 6 chunks, which I like to suck down to nothing. Problem solved

By:
anxious, I've heard low carbs is good for losing weight but 'no carbs' is bad for you. A weight program that many swear by is the 5:2 diet, although I haven't tried it myself
By:
I used to love galaxy, and other bars especially Topics.
Can't stand them now. It's weird. If you don't like sugar in coffee and you get a drink of coffee with sugar, that's what ordinary chocolate is like to me now! |

Here's something else you might want to know.
When you eat a meal the carbs turn to glucose which gets stored in you liver and muscles, to be used as immediate fuel. The fat gets turned straight into body fat, to be stored until you run out of glucose. You can't burn fat and carbs at the same time. The glucose gets used first and then the fat gets turned to glucose and burned after the glucose has been used, during sleep most of the time. Or not at all if you've been pigging out. The protein is used where needed and the excess turned into glucose. Carbs with the exception of sugar/alcohol do not easily turn into fat. So if you're trying to lose weight, try to avoid putting on fat at every meal in the first place. And remember that 30% of fructose is turned into fat. You can see now why those who stick to starch based diets don't gain weight. |

As Dr McDougall loves to quip - ''the fat you eat is the fat you wear.''
By:
There you go STUDYFORM, now even a wooden head like yourself has no excuse for being overweight through ignorance.
By:
STUDYFORM your 'conspiracy shoite' comments are ignorant to say the least YOU seem like you've bought the Big Pharma conspiracy and are paying for it with your health,I'm living testament to what a diet based on McDougall's teachings which are wholly based on fact.
Aspro you will always lose weight short term on any low carb high fat diet and any intermittent fasting diet like the 5:2,the problem with all of these diets is their contents aren't any good for long term health and sustainability only a starch/plant/wholefoods based diet with a small amount of supplementation provide long term definitive health benefits. Aside from weight loss and all that comes with that issue auto immune illnesses improve and are cured especially arthritis and allergies were the most notable cure for myself this spring and summer. |

Dr McDougall is ONLY promoted, written about, sold, by Dr McDougall.
His "teachings" are rubbish. Phrases like "Big Pharma" are from people like McDougall. Your assertion that diabetes can be cured with diet - is complete blollox and there are many thousands of experts, doctors and diabetics who will attest. You are living testament that some prat who makes something up and posts it on youtube can always find a fool to follow it. Fad diets nearly all exist to make their inventors money, buzzwords/phrases like "Big Pharma" (or illuminati) are put there incase someone with sense or knowledge questions the BS. STUDYFORM • October 14, 2018 7:24 PM BST http://slowburnfitness.com/dr-mcdougall-a-k-a-dr-potato-head/ This is the 1st thing I've found about McDougall, that isn't by him!!! You are preaching the crap of a charlatan. |
By:
So what do you suggest other than being on type 2 meds for the rest of your slow death?
By:
I suggest seeing true experts, taking the meds (if that's what's needed) because that's what they're for, a healthy diet, exercise, and taking REAL advice.
I'm assuming you don't intend to read the link I put up, as it refutes Mcdougall's nonsense. |
