No big deal - just lose a bit of weight and your bloods, blood pressure etc will come down and keep you off medication. Early diabetes symptoms are a lifestyle warning notice.
Good luck. |

Haven't you got a blood glucose metre ufcdan?
You need to take more of an interest before you wind up really fat and ill. |

Apparently I'm 'pre-diabetic' and need to make lifestyle changes. The readings (I was told) is under 42 is ok, 42-48 is pre-diabetic and over 48 is diabetic (I think I've got this right). Last time I was 35 but latest fasting blood readings were 44. No pills, just advice and they will check again in December

Here's the scale I'm more familiar with
Normal ...........3.9 - 5.5 mmol/L Pre diabetic......5.5 - 6.9 diabetic ........ over 6.9. The other scale widely used is normal = 100. Simply divide by 18 to give the previous scale. The pre diabetic condition is claimed to be completely reversible. Also many cases of full diabetes. It means maintaining a very strict dietary regime, it'll bring your blood pressure down with a bang as well. Here's one of the doctors you need to listen to, check out all his videos on the subject. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv8xa-9NScU |

Hi ufcdan. Lots of free info on how to control or reverse type 2 diabetes on dietdoctor.com (I have no affiliation or need to advertise this site). You need to drastically reduce, or if you can omit carbs and sugar from your diet. Eat mainly protein and fats, Yes fats and increase your exercise. It worked for me and I hope it works for you. Good luck.

McDougall and his associates say the exact opposite of that Jonboy.
|
|
By:
McDougall and all the science dating back donkeys' years are correct it is easily the most sustainable way, plus when you've been low carb for a long time and you re-introduce sugar/starch you get big insulin spikes and will accumulate the weight lost very quickly especially if you continue to eat fat from meat/fish and dairy as well, not to mention the carcinogenic effects of said foodstuffs which makes long term low carb pointless health wise.
As addressed before by people like McDougall living on starch/fruit/veg doesn't create the billions the medical industry receives from those forced down the path of a lifetime on medication ergo shoddy advice is the norm for the industry, despite years of KNOWN science which say otherwise. |

The best thing anyone can do is to get a blood glucose meter, they're cheap enough.
You should get one on the NHS if you're diabetic. If not. Here's one, there are lots of others about. http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/caresens-dual-blood-glucose-and-ketone-meter/ Try the McDougall diet, watch your readings drop, and your blood pressure, then come back and thank me and Denzil for showing you the way. |
|
By:
This one's even cheaper.
http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/caresens-n-blood-glucose-meter/ They sometimes give the meters away and just sell you the strips. The strips are cheap too. |

I'm diabetic, and work in a business where I hear about it all the time.
It used to be called "late onset diabetes" and has always been common. Much of the reason so many people have it now is because they never looked so hard for it before, except a wee on a stick, which was not always accurate. It is also hereditary. Recently, the NHS guidelines have changed and now many more people are being classified as "Pre-diabetic" as well as diabetic, because the numbers have changed. What was NOT diabetic a few months ago, is now!!!! The key to how actually diabetic you are is how much Metformin you are prescribed. 500mg a day (1 pill), for example means it may well be reversible with some common sense. 2000mg (2 tablets, twice a day) is one stage before an additional pill (eg, Alogliptin) which is just the last stage before Insulin. Blood glucose meters are accurate, but are NOT a guide of diabetes, however they can be a method of control for concerned diabetics. My GP and surgery keep issuing me with new ones every time they get talked into buying them by whichever pharmaceutical company has come up with the best new offer. The money is made from the testing strips. The best and most reliable test is the HbA1c, which is got from a blood test, usually every 3 or 6 months. HbA1c is how much haemoglobin in the blood has become bonded to glucose. Without doubt, losing weight reduces the severity of diabetic issues, and weight loss will almost certainly fend off the need for insulin in type2 diabetes. Many other "age related" or even genetically pre-disposed conditions can and will be attributed to diabetes even if it isn't diabetes which caused them. This is a worrying trend. A cynic might even say it saves the NHS a bit of spending. According to an extremely clever and well qualified endocrinologist professor I once chatted with. 2 things: "You either have diabetes or you don't" and don't get hooked up about the blood glucose or glucose tolerance readings "they're just numbers" Finally, worth remembering is that sugar isn't the only sugar! Carbohydrate becomes sugar in the blood. BUT also remember that we need carbohydrates to live (despite any Atkins followers saying otherwise). It's just about being sensible and as with most of life; Everything in moderation. |

These glucose meters.............would it mean me feeling a small pr1ck ?

STUDYFORM words fail me when reading this post if this is the kind of shyte being peddled around via extremely clever and well qualified endocRinologist professors no wonder diabetes is on the rise.
NO HUMAN BEING IS PRE-DISPOSED TO TYPE 2 DIABETES AND IT ISN'T AND HAS NEVER BEEN HEREDITARY SUGAR ISN'T THE PROBLEM FAT IS THE PROBLEM SUGAR IN ANY FORM 100% DOES NOT CAUSE DIABETES EVERYTHING IN MODERATION IS COMPLETE BOLLYX IF YOU EAT A MODERATE AMOUNT OF FAT WITH A MODERATE AMOUNT OF PROTEIN AND A MODERATE AMOUNT OF CARBS YOU WILL LIKELY BE OVERWEIGHT AND ILL MODERATE EXERCISE HAS NO BEARING ON THIS WHATSOEVER |
|
By:
Would like to add the hereditary factor only occurs when people eat too much fat and foods which make you fat creating the lifestyle necessary to create the illness, often eating habits are inherited from family which would suggest a predisposition but that can only occur with the fattening lifestyle.

You need to do a bit of (proper) research, Denzil.
If one of your parents has diabetes, you have a 15% chance of being diabetic, if both your parents have it, you have a 75% chance. But this doesn't mean you can't fend it off Diabetes is about how well (or in the case of type 1 -if at all) your pancreas produces insulin to offset the glucose in the blood. I never said sugar causes diabetes. It doesn't, nor does fat. Being overweight is a good way to help the pancreas not work efficiently. But, there are plenty of slim diabetics. And not everyone who's overweight is diabetic, are they? But losing weight is the best way to keep diabetes away if you are on the edge of having it. You've written that little explosion like someone who spends too much time at the gym, or reading about fad diets. And despite your indignation, I'll listen to the endocrinology consultant before some American website that wants my money and makes loads of spurious claims. If McDougall or any other quack had this wondrous cure for diabetes. The world's doctors would use it and diabetes would go the way of smallpox. If the rice diet was so brilliant then over 50% of the world's diabetics wouldn't be in India and China where rice is the main foodstuff. So FYI, it's quite easy to check out. Here are a few (real) things you could try looking at https://www.diabetes.org.uk/ https://www.endocrineweb.com/conditions/type-2-diabetes/symptoms-diagnosis-treatments-type-2-diabetes https://pathways.nice.org.uk/pathways/preventing-type-2-diabetes#path=view%3A/pathways/preventing-type-2-diabetes/local-action-to-prevent-type-2-diabetes-including-strategy-policy-and-commissioning.xml&content=view-node%3Anodes-needs-assessment-to-prevent-type-2-diabetes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes_mellitus |

I'm afraid STUDYFORM's knowledge of the treatment for diabetes is entrenched in the conventional medical wisdom that protects our food industry and pharmaceuticals industry, and that is the problem.
I won't go so far as to say criminal but it's close. That's if you think that pushing products that are known to make people ill isn't criminal. And keeping them sick just to make profits for drug manufacturers isn't either. |

McDougall isn't a quack by the way, he's a fully qualified medical doctor who practises in America.
There's a band of high profile qualified medical doctors in the States using the same methods, including, Barnard, Klaper, Greger, McDonald. Check them out there are many more besides these. Greger edited a four-page spread in the Daily Mail about these methods earlier in the year. And a national newspaper is hardly likely to employ a quack. McDougall himself once had his own television programme; he's been widely interviewed about his methods and is well known in medical circles. I'm glad STUDYFORM joined the debate, because he's brought up the point of the spread of diabetes in India and China. People in India and China never used to suffer from diabetes like they do now. It's since they became prosperous and adopted the western diet including animal products that diabetes has exploded onto the scene. Before recent times they couldn't afford to buy the food that's making them ill right now. And that point is watertight. |
|
By:
STUDYFORM you say you are a diabetic 'late onset' your words as you didn't specify type 1 or 2.
You are taking drugs longterm for a curable illness by food and nothing else and you tell others to do some proper research that is your choice, but it's poor form giving someone looking for help advice that will lead them down the path you took which obviously is not curing your illness. |

Diabetes is about how well (or in the case of type 1 -if at all) your pancreas produces insulin to offset the glucose in the blood.
That's not it at all. This needs explaining properly: Most people with early S2 diabetes are producing way more insulin than those without diabetes. Because their problem is insulin resistance. Which means they're producing the insulin all right, but the insulin is not opening the receptors to let in the glucose from the blood and allow the glucose levels to drop. So they keep producing more and more insulin to try and do the job which is damaging in itself. In extreme cases this can wear out the pancreas and that's how S2 diabetes can turn into S1 diabetes. What has to be worked on are the glucose receptors that are slowing or stopping the glucose from going in. And the reason they're restricting the glucose, is because they're clogged with fat. Remove the fat from your diet, which allows the receptors to clear, and it's goodbye diabetes if you catch it early before you've f'ck'd up your pancreas. It's so elementary it's amazing that isn't common knowledge especially amongst GPs, who seem quite happy to dole out medicine that keeps people ill instead of giving advice that might cure them. Listen to Dr Greger explain it in five minutes along with all the studies to back it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRZduVxlP_U |

You mention so much that's wrong..... It's hard to know what to dispel first. Here are a very few. McDougall isn't a quack by the way, he's a fully qualified medical doctor who practises in America. So F'ing what? There haven't been qualified doctors in America quacking it about to sell books before, have there? Greger edited a four-page spread in the Daily Mail about these methods earlier in the year. And a national newspaper is hardly likely to employ a quack. McDougall himself once had his own television programme; he's been widely interviewed about his methods and is well known in medical circles. The Daily Mail... Well that MUST be OK then. As for media not employing a quack - I give you Gillian McKeith. There's a band of high profile qualified medical doctors in the States using the same methods, including, Barnard, Klaper, Greger, McDonald. There's a BIGGER band who are not!!!!! Why not take notice of them? What has to be worked on are the glucose receptors that are slowing or stopping the glucose from going in. And the reason they're restricting the glucose, is because they're clogged with fat No, It isn't. People in India and China never used to suffer from diabetes like they do now. People in India and China weren't being screened for it like they are now. Diabetes is about how well (or in the case of type 1 -if at all) your pancreas produces insulin to offset the glucose in the blood. That's not it at all. This needs explaining properly: Your knowledge of the subject is entrenched in the shoite plonked by those with nothing better to do all over the internet. The Atkins diet is NOT good. Very few GP's if any will advise embarking on it. It isn't a conspiracy theory where the whole Medical profession is out to fool everyone except the few - like you, and it seems, Denzil - who have the inside track, the "real knowledge". This is a small clip from the endocrineweb site I posted the link for earlier. Development of type 2 diabetes seems to be multi-factorial; that is, there are a number of issues to blame. Genetic predisposition seems to be the strongest factor. Obesity and high caloric intake seem to be another. Twenty percent of people with this type 2 diabetes have antibodies to their islet cells which are detectable in their blood resulting in the expected low levels of insulin, suggesting the possibility of incomplete islet cell destruction (see discussion about autoimmune diabetes in the type 1 diabetes section). These patients often tend to respond early to oral drugs to lower blood sugar but may need insulin at some point. You cannot - as you do all the time, just decide that everyone can be cured of every ailment with stupid (or not) diets and not taking pills. As with just about every topic, crippen, you are about 90% wrong. Even more wrong (100%) is Denzil's assertion that late onset type 2 diabetes can be "Cured" by diet. This is simply ENTIRELY WRONG. Some of the pre-diabetes diagnoses, which are, as I said, handed out too freely, can be reversed with a bit of weight loss. But unless you're a magician or have stumbled upon something medical science hasn't. The is no actual cure for diabetes. It's not a new disease, and is a slow and silent killer. I HAVE NOW WRITTEN 3 VERY LONG AND CONCISE, FACTUAL POSTS ABOUT IT AND POSTED 4 LINKS - THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO DEBATE - I AM NOT INTERESTED IN WHAT SOME CONSPIRACY THEORISTS OR QUACKS WITH BOOKS TO SELL SAY OR THINK. IF THIS IS TO MY DETRIMENT (I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT IS), THEN SO BE IT. |

Clearly my mention of the Atkins diet was not a recommendation.

All info from McDougall is free there is no charge for any of the articles on his website or the 100's of free videos on many health related subjects.
STUDYFORM are you on medication for type 2 with no hope of ever being cured? If so why aren't you doing more? Reversal and curing of type 2 is almost nailed on following the correct diet and has been proven for decades, you seem to be getting your information from those who keep you ill which is a shame. |
|
By:
STUDYFORM for what it's worth I currently eat about 500-600g of sugar in various forms every day do you think I'll get type 2 soon?
|
|
By:
At no point, at any time did I say eating sugar will give you diabetes, denzil. Maybe you could try reading what I wrote.
Diabetes is a disease where handling sugar in the blood is either tricky or impossible. I also said it can be reversed. But not cured. There are plenty of skinny diabetics. No amount of pontificating by some evangelist petrol will suddenly eradicate this disease. You are both talking total BS. Which I'd expect from crippen, as he does little else, but you're usually more sensible. Crippen mostly ignoring virtually I pointed out, in favour of one misinterpreted line..... typical. You're an idiot crippen. This is just talking to conspiracy nutters, which, as has been discovered by everyone who's ever tried is impossible. It's just more proof that you can find anything you want to back up anything someone wants you to believe, if you want to. That's my last post on this subject. knock yourselves out. |
