The sun is very strong in the Mediterranean so don't be afraid to put plenty of contrast between light and shade.
Are the buildings in proportion to each other?

Hi M_D. I've submitted your photo for approval. It's surprising how big that tower is compared with the surrounding village. Your drawing looks OK at first glance.

Who is that Zorro? She looks very stern. Will you be doing a sketch of Kate Bush for us?

Thanks, Foinavon. It's probably one of the most recognisable views of Saint Tropez.

M_D's photo of St. Tropez.
Although I lived in France for a number of years, I don't recall ever going there.

Thanks, Foinavon.

I went last year. I fell in love with the place.

I love France Love

Where about in France did you live?

I lived near Lyon for a couple of years then moved to a small town near Rouen when I changed jobs. This was way back in the 1970s. You should always do these things when young and optimistic.

it's doodling - it's out of my head. not aiming for a likeness, like this sheet below, it's just random.

Paddy Power already using the "Black Betty" song as "Bad Betty".
Nice drawing, clever use of the letters, Zoz.

France used to be lovely back then Makybe_Diva. The standard of living and quality of life was far better than in Harold Wilson's Britain. Things have equalised since then and not for the better as far as France is concerned (IMO).

Did this while listening to football phone-ins...haven't done pencil portrait drawing for years...bought 8 graded pencils in a tin case for £2...plan to frame this and use as a prop in an oil painting.

You guys have got this pencil drawing art sussed. I love the subtlety in the lady's hair Vel. Who is she?
The eyes are a bit like Kate Bush's eyes, all the lines disguised with Polyfilla and false eyelashes. A very nice portrait.

I don't know, Foinavon - she was in a Cagney movie I watched last week, a movie from 1930...I thought she looked like Princess Margaret Laugh...anyway, she is only in the movie for seconds and is not listed in the credits...managed to find a nice wee picture frame this afternoon...

It's a nice test piece for pencils as you can pick out tonal values from 1-5, most light (face) to most dark (background)...the dark bits are done lightly with a 5b pencil and then you can use a hard H pencil to go over the dark graphite, and this compresses the graphite into the tooth of the paper, which is quite rough.

She does bear a resemblance to Princess Diana rather than Margaret to me. I saw a wax statue of Diana in the Great Hall at Warwick castle a few years back and was surprised by how tall she was. I believe the statue was on loan from Tussauds along with some others.

Thanks, M_D. Although I'm happy with the picture, I'm annoyed at my camera's colour response. The real thing has much more saturated colours and a redder bias than the camera is recording. It should be possible to adjust this but I can't see how. Cameras are far more complicated than they need be. Angry

Ha, could have made the hair bigger but would need a bigger sheet of paper.
