Yes seaview, it's processed sh1t that is causing most of the diseases of the Western World.

If we stopped eating processed food and avoided sugar like the plague then a lot of our illnesses would simply disappear.

I've fallen out of love with Horizon over the years. I'm sure they used to be better than they are now.

I watched the one a few weeks ago with the annoying Dr Ali. It seemed nothing more than an hour long advert for L'Oreal.

So I couldn't be bothered to watch the episode on fasting. But I've been following this thread with great interest and this afternoon I gave in and watched the programme on You Tube.

I'm glad I did, it was very good.

I always follow a calorie restricted diet, by that I mean I just eat enough for my needs never any more. And always with optimal nutrition.

I eat about the same amount every day. No fasting involved. But according to the programme eating this way will not effect IGF 1. Only fasting will bring it down.

I might try fasting every alternate day. This would be easy for me to do (I think).

I will have eggs and porridge for breakfast on my fast day. That would be about 500 calories. The next day I'll eat as normal.

I must look into IGF 1 in greater detail ( the joys of the Internet).

Began the 5/2 fast nine days ago(Monday and Tuesday fasting days) and i can report a weight loss of 7lbs for myself and 5 lbs for Mrs twizzle. Fasting days consist of home made vegetable soup eaten at midday and a portion of cod with mixed vegetables at six in the evening with an apple in between . Loads of water and a good tip is to mix some carbonated mineral water with a slice of lemon and it feels like you are having a "proper drink". Carnt say its been easy because i am a real pig at heart but Wednesday morning is the best feeling ever, being able to eat more or less what i want.Just to point out i am not not grossly overweight ( 6ft tall and twelve stone eleven pounds when i started)and i haven't deprived myself of anything on non fasting days..as an example last week i necked eight pints of bitter , ate 3/4 of an m&s walnut cake and a 500 ml tub of dairy ice cream. I feel great and am going to continue the "fast" for the foreseeable future..good luck to those who decide to have a dab.

This study on protein restriction compared to calorie restriction is interesting. In a 6-year study of 28 vegans and 28 calorie-restricted dieters, the vegans, who were on a moderately protein-restricted diet, showed significantly lower levels of IGF-1 despite the fact that they were heavier. The calorie-restricted dieters' IGF-1 levels were also lower, but only a little bit lower, than someone on a standard 'Western' diet.
.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2673798/

The study suggests to me that you should reduce your protein intake to around 0.75g a day for every kg of body weight. The Horizon programme seemed to suggest that it doesn't matter how you achieve this. The first (four day) fast worked but IGF-1 didn't remain down because he went back to eating normally - he only did it once. The alternate day worked but he didn't think he could do it and the 5:2 worked, which is what he went with because it suited him better. So (it appears) it doesn't matter too much what you do as long as you work it so your protein intake works out at about 0.75g per day over a period.

I don't know if it is right, but that's my interpretation and I'm following it for now.

That's interesting, boggle.

My weight hovers around 9 stone (57kg)so, according to that little sum, I should be having around 43grams of protein a day.

I have a lot mmore than that, especially when I've done weight training.

Maybe I'll reduce my protein on non weight training days.

Trouble is, high protein foods are my favourite...chicken, eggs, oats, salmon, nuts, seeds (I eat lots of nuts and seeds). I eat most of this daily. So this, with all the other stuff I eat, means my protein intake is through the roof some days.

I have never actually worked it out and added it up.

I'm now going to have a read of your article

Quote from boggle's article.

"In addition, our data provide evidence that protein intake is a key determinant of circulating IGF-1 levels in humans, and suggest that reduced protein intake may become an important component of anticancer and anti-aging dietary interventions."

I've got to take more notice of how much protein I'm having.

I've just been rummaging round the kitchen... a tin of sardines has 22grams of protein. I eat sardines as a snack between (high protein) meals!

I'm off to do some more rummaging.

Today I will be having over 100grams of protein Shocked

I'm not exrecising at the moment, coz I'm not very well. So I don't need so much today.

I always guessed my intake to be between 60 and 80grams a day. That is what I thought I needed.

Porridge isn't so bad at only 5grams per serving Happy

I'm drastically going to cut my protein...this could save me a fortune.

It's day 24 and I can't believe I've had the willpower to stick with this.Even though I'm finding the fasting days hard guess it can't be that bad as I'm still doing it.Pleased to find I lost another three pounds that puts me on a total of fourteen pounds lost now.It would be nice to start eating the 500 cals on fasting days but I've still got about another four stone to lose and when I see the weight loss each week I think just stick with it a bit longer.
Thanks for the link ooO{Alpha Centauri}Ooo good site.

Thanks for that superam. Can you tell me why you think it's bad for you out of interest?

This could also be a tricky week for me with the weight loss as I had a few last night and am meeting a mate today where I know too many will be drank and also out Monday.Basically an extra days drinking this week.

Two interesting articles on sweeteners.

Xylitol - http://www.naturalnews.com/022986_xylitol_health_sugar.html

Perfect Sweet is made from xylitol.

Stevia - http://www.naturalnews.com/029057_agave_nectar_stevia.html

Stevia looks to me to be the best sweetener to use, but you can find articles that will tell you that it's not so good.

It's very difficult to know what to believe when you read about anything related to health as you don't always know who has funded the research.

I'm seeing a lot of stevia sweeteners around that don't seem to be pure stevia. Such as Truvia

Truvia is made by Silver Spoon. So I wouldn't buy any of that on principle.

I don't buy or have a use for any type of sugar substitute..

If the freakin' sugar industry hadn't got everyone so hooked on the deadly stuff in the first place we wouldn't be having this problem Angry

Thanks for the tip about canderel it really does appear to be pretty lethal stuff. To think I was using up to 30 tablets a day of it. Decided to give up on the sweetners altogether.
Will check out the link later d13phe.

stevia is good but agave is a scam and is at best, as bad as HFCS, and at worst almost 100 percent fructose, depends on processing.

Is it not meant to be two consecutive days of fasting?
By:

When: 05 Sep 12 13:35
Just found this on the net.

• It doesn’t matter which days are spent “feeding” and which “fasting”, as long as the fasting days are non-consecutive and you stick to the 5:2 ratio.

am also giving it a go, after being intrigued by the program. Mondays for me is usually a day where I eat very little anyway so that's easy. I'm juggling the other day around according to what I'm doing work wise. Yesterday was my second of this week and managed ok.
Some steamed haddock and pak choi for lunch and a slimasoup around tea time. Cutting down food for me isn't a problem, it's the coffee.

It's day 31 for me and after all my concern about the extra day in the pub I'm another four pounds lighter taking the total to 1 Stone and 4lbs.
Considering I've drank about 22 pints this week I'm pretty amazed at the weight loss considering I probably do less exercise than anyone as in zilch.
Having said that it's motivated me to arrange a mornings walk on Sunday with a mate which in fairness was a regular thing until all the rain but never got back into it until now.
I'm also sleeping a little better and feel a lot more awake and alive the last couple of days. At the moment this appears to be one of the best things I've ever done.
