oh, forgot to say - with the sugar-free jelly, if you make it with less water and put it in very small ice-cube trays to set then it's sort of (very sort of...) like boiled sweets.

also, lots of sugar-free sweets on-line - just beware the laxative effect!

Diet irrevalent...exercise is the key then lump on what you want....tdf cyclists require mammoth calories each evening to get on the bike next day. Been thinking about the Morgan Spurlock Mickie D's diet myself...looks like a challenge...Crazy

still trying this , not putting weight on but not losing either.
drink doesnt help and ive had an eye opener seeing what calories are in stuff , i like a bag of sweets now and then , 500 calories!
pints are a killer too.

anyways , anyone find that you say , ill do the fast day tomorrow and then find yourself saying the same the next day :)
takes a fair bit of discipline

Day 59. I've found it fairly easy to stick to stevie and for the first time in a long while I've actually stuck to something and not cheated at all. Time to eat my own words as I've lost only a 1lb this week and it does deflate you a little but it's still nearer my goal.
The beer definitely hammers it though and I reckon I could be half a stone ahead if I had stopped drinking. My determination grows each day to see this through and good luck to all those having a go.

little tip for the fasting days.

If you like coffee have a couple of coffees with cream in.  It won't take you out of your fast Grin

Excellent bigmo..keep it up mate your doing terrific.I've put on 4lb since my last weigh in ( 16days) but thats hardly surprising as i have had a pretty busy social calender this past fortnight.During that time i haven't deprived myself of ANYTHING , however, i will cut down on my lager content in future months ( summers gone now anyway so no great hardship)g/l all.

great stuff bigmo , are you using that libra app? its interesting to show the graph of weight loss.
even gives an estimate of when your likely to reach your goal , so even though its only a 1lb its going in the right direction.
been really interesting to study all this calorie stuff and sadly all the things i like are laden with them :(
however it now makes perfect sense why someone who like myself who doesnt eat too badly is carrying weight around the gut.
beer and lager and guiness!
like said im going to keep at this and try cut down on the drinking , not many events between now and christmas.
good luck everyone and keep it up.
i was 195 today so a slight weight loss , my goal is 180

Well done to all that are still doing this.  I'm doing the bog standard 5:2 Today I am 10 pounds lighter than when I began 7 weeks ago.

Rate of decrease has definitely slowed of late but still going the right way.
Eaten badly over the last week, though I have also done a lot of exercise.

Thinking of giving this a go! so does it have to be exactly 24 hours?

So could I have dinner on Sunday at say 6pm and then not eat until Monday 6pm?

Would beans on toast be ok for a fast day?

am going to give some kind of 'fasting' a go in this winter to get in tip top shape for next season
By:

When: 14 Oct 12 16:21
You should be ok with the 24hrs upthedron. I'm really no expert but the best idea I would have thought is to work out how many calories you're having on a normal day.I'm guessing if you want to eat on a fast day you need to be eating not much more than 3000 which if you have say up to 600 on a fast day works out about 1800 a day which I would think nearly everyone would lose weight on.
Others prob better than me to give advice.

Sounds like it could be easier than i first thought.

i am now testing the one meal a day (for the whole week) and i think it is my favourite of the lot

i must admit some days i get hungry and eat a lunch around 1/2 pm but i will usually now just eat a large meal (approx 1000-1500 calories) at night.  I try to get 60/70% of the calories from fat (good fats) and i feel stuffed until the next sitting usually about 18 hrs -24 hrs later

its good to keep the body guessing imo

upthedron, yes its just breakfast and dinner gone.  not that hard really to skip a couple of meals.  just stay well hyrdated

Great thread.

I started 7 weeks ago with the 5/2 fasting limiting the 2 days to 600 cals, but never lost anything at all in the first 2 weeks so decided to go for it hard for a month and on the 2 days to have nothing except water. I still eat every day as fast starts about 5pm after tea on Monday and Thursday until tea time Tuesday and Friday.

I refused to weigh myself until the month was up today but knew I was losing something due to the belt and jeans getting slacker, got on the scales tonight+ have lost exactly 8 kilos. Was 113 Kilos now at 105, so still plenty to do but going to keep at it as can see results.

Been doing a lot of long walks, and switched from scooping Cider to vodka when out which probably helps as well, and find that myfitnesspal program someone posted earlier is really helpful.

Find it a bit of a challenge going the 24 hours but sleeping a lot of it anyway. Only downside is usually get headaches after lunchtime on fasting day but worth it to get the timber off.

Good luck all.

Had my fasting day yesterday and finding it easier and easier as it becomes more routine.
Had fruit late morning, a miso soup mid afternoon and scrambled egg with fish for dinner.
I did the scrambled egg in a non stick frying pan with 2 squirts of "Fry Light" and it was still very tasty. No milk or butter. Happy

get the full fat butter in there Sultan

nothing wrong with pure saturated fats.  I have ghee in my coffee.  fills me up for hours and hours which means i eat a lot less in the long run as I don't feel the need to snack.

Can we have some clarification, please.
------------------------------

People refer to "FASTING Days" ...... However

Some posters appear to do 'FASTING DAYS' quite literally - NO Food, whatsoever

Whilst others consider 'FASTING DAYS' to be ....Eat LESS/LIGHTER meals days.... to around a Maximum of 600 calories intake

AS in ....
----------

FULL FASTING - NO Food ....

BrendanScrote     27 Sep 12 19:22
Question about fast days

Do you have your fasts for 24 hours or for longer ?

What I'm saying is would you have your evening meal at maybe 18:00 on one day and fast through to a later supper at maybe 20:00 the next day (26 hour fast) or would you go through to breakfast on the next day at say 07:00 (37 hour fast)

bigmo     28 Sep 12 11:27
I eat my last food about 8pm which leaves 35 hours each time until I eat at 7am after a fast day.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile - there are a myriad of {light) meal suggestions - or simply only Soup and drinks - posted by other .... who consider 'FASTING Days to be JUST- 'Eat LESS' days.

I ALSO ask, because -

Dependant upon the above decision ....

If the 'Fasting Days' are either  EAT LESS days, or NO food days - then doing them on, say, SUNDAY and WEDNESDAY would give the body two 'BREATHER' days  - and possibly be a  more effective/natural and beneficial approach to the body - both physically and MENTALLY - than doing TWO CONSECUTIVE days - especially of FULL Fasting, which would then be PURGING the body.

Thanks.

to get the real benefit from fasting there needs to be a gap between meals.  Coffee and water allowed as it doesn't bring our out of the fast (technically speaking)

plenty of info about it on the internet.

i think the daily mail jumped on this fasting bandwagon with the nonsense that you should only eat 600 calories 2 days a week

the real 5/2 fast was created by a chap called Brad Pilon in Eat/Stop/Eat http://www.eatstopeat.com/.  you dont need to buy his book, just read his blog.

Thank you - d13phe

I have read the whole thread - and watched the video of the programme, too.

Logic dictates that TOTAL abstinence FASTING Days will be more effective - weight-loss wise - than LESS eating/600 calorie days... or, at least, quicker weight-loss results than just the reduced food intake approach.

However - I asked because so many above posters report excellent results from Less eating days - as opposed to TOTAL Fasting - too.

Hence my questions - and, ALSO, the secondary scenario of TWO separate days 'FASTING' or Less eating - rather than CONSECUTIVE days - which I would still like comment upon.

Again - Logic dictates that Two separate days would be far easier to 'handle' mentally (for most people) - than would Two CONSECUTIVE days, together.
By:

if you want quick results i have found that

always skipping breakfast and first meal is lunch and 1/2 24 hr fasts a week works best
By:

When: 16 Oct 12 22:29
Not 'wanting' "quick results," - as, fortunately, not really too overweight.

I was thinking the opposite - As it is well documented that the 'faster you lose the weight - then the faster you, usually, put it back on again' ... and some by many accounts.

The thinking was, therefore, more in terms of just shedding 10lbs, or so. gradually, and then maintaining that - which would, in my mind, be more manageable by the Two separate days approach.

How would that sit with the 'Cell repair' - as opposed to new cell production - age-related disease prevention benefits outlined in the programme?

As i said there is loads of stuff on the internet about health benefits.

the way i figure it is if your body spends less time digesting food, then it has the time and resources to focus on other parts of your body (i.e. repair)

onlooker I'm in the less than 600 cals 2 days out of seven camp. And they're not consecutive days. Modified intermittent fasting is easier imo, and this from my understanding of the original video helps reduce IGF1 production. Switching to a healthier diet is obviously better than doing nothing, but a calorie starve seems to have a positive shock effect on the body. Just try it for say 2 weeks and see how you feel.
By:
genelec
When: 17 Oct 12 14:32
Onlooker, as time goes on the body adapts to the shock and it gets easier mentally to do the fast days. I have just started mondays and thursdays, 600 calories. 3 fast days so far. The first was difficult, I found it hard not to constantly think about food, the second one was easier but I still thought about food a lot. The third I went 24 hours without food no problems whatsoever. I still thought about food but no more than I would usually as if not fasting. After the second fast I had dropped 2.5 lbs. Your 10lb goal should be pretty easy imo.

i'm joining all you fattys on the 5/2 regime. currently 12st 8  looking to get down to about 11st and lose the beer belly.  Today is day one of the fasting, seems simple enough. Good to see something that seems to work for everyone without having to sacrifice all that i enjoy over the weekends.
