Ys, Huntley was indeed a 'majority' 11-1 verdict, despite offering the most ludicrous 'defence' of all time. He was effctively presented as Soham's 'Unlucky Alf'.

That same crime in an American state with no death penalty, he would have got 100 years.

20 years just seems very short for a sexually motivated murder

you'd hope the judge would have given him life for manslaughter anyway, given what he knew

he gets a minimum 20 years life sentence, so he'll be 53 before he's even considered
to be released. Deserved a full automatic life sentence.

Tried to cover his tracks, gave police misleading information and tried to frame the landlord,
"throttled her after watching porn and she died in pain and fear".
That poor girl and this disgusting person.

Don't think the jury had the full details of him watching violent porn before.

I guess the Lib Dems hope he will be rehabilitated in prison

That will be a factor if he comes up for probation after 20 years. Bearing in mind there was no provocation, no mitigating factors it's unlikely he'll ever be released.

He will be released. We will attempt to deport him, but that will fail because of the right to a family life. Then he will claim he needs a new identity to live in the UK. Plus 24 hour police protection.

I was on a jury many years ago and the whole process was quite disturbing.

I won't give details of the trial but it was quite a serious case. During breaks many of the other jurors moaned at court officials about how long they were being kept and how much they could claim in expenses.

Once the case had been presented which took quite a few days we were asked to adjourn and went to a room with the only instruction that we must let the usher know when we had a unanimous verdict.

The hours that followed were quite incredible. It started with electing a foreman. Most didn't want to do it because they claimed they didn't want to get too involved. Others said they didn't feel comfortable leading/organising the discussion. Some were clearly too thick to understand why they were even there.

I threw my hat into the ring and offered to be foreman and despite being the youngest person in the room by quite a margin they all immediately accepted this and from then essentially deferred to anything I said.

I thought the case was pretty clear cut however to this day I am convinced I could have got the rest of the group to give a different decision if I had been minded to do so. There were a mixture of some who didn't understand the whole case and others who wanted to go home as soon as possible.

If I were a defendent my biggest concern would be the quality of the jury. It is a sad fact that a random group of 12 people in the UK these days is going to have a high proportion of complete inadequates.

Banks... I did jury service on one occasion, the accused was a postman who had been nicking Credit cards ..
When we was asked to adjourn it was more or less the same as what you have just described
except after about an hour of discussing the case one amazingly thick lady juror commented
that the accused was a decent bloke and never nicked anything we he was her postman.

The case was thrown out a re trial was set.

I heard he got off, when in fact he was soooo guilty.

I swore from then on to never do it again, The general public are just too thick.

Here's a pending execution in Texas, with similarities apart from the aggravating factor of kidnapping.

Banks. One of the better posts. I've heard whoever first volunteers to be foreman virtually never gets challenged. I have a Barrister friend working in, shall we say, a less well off area of the country. Some of the horror stories I've heard would be beyond belief, except we know this day and age they aren't...

Both crimes are equally as bad. Can we leave it at that? Or start a new thread comparing the two cases.

If he was an experienced serial killer, he probably wouldnt pick on someone who lived so close to him.

Any proof he was a serial killer?

Well known fact that 80% of victims know their assailant ( serious crime) and 90% of assailants either live or work within 500 yards of the crime-scene.

implication is though if he had held his hands up straight away he'd have got 13 or 14 years - a third off for a guilty plea - which would be absurd given the aggravating features of the murder.

Intent to kill or 'do serious harm' unproven here. Manslaughter it is.

were you being serious??

How on earth could it ever be proven if you have to prove what was going through the killers mind at the time?

If you take a deliberate action that is clearly going to result in death then that is murder .Wether or not the killer stopped to think about it beforehand is neither here nor there.

Manslaughter is surely when someone is responsible for the death but the action/or inaction could not be forseen as being fatal . The 'unsound mind' defence is very dubious when that comes up IMO but that was not the case here anyway.

Yes the Huntley is innocent juror was quite unbelievable. Judges sometimes don't explain reasonable doubt so well and some people get the idea that it means scientific proof.

I've done Jury Service a couple of times and people are happy to drag it out for another day off work tbh

yep with that defence every single person to have murdered someone with intent to could claim after that "oh I didnt mean it"
