The judge today was reported to have told the jury they had to be "sure" that Tabak intended to kill. Maybe some of the jury thought they had to be 100% certain when of course they only have to believe it beyond reasonable doubt.
I can't see how a juror could hear that it took 20 seconds to strangle the life out of her, yet be unsure Tabak intended to kill her. This was one of the most chancer defences I have heard (because there was no better one) and the defence council still got two jurors to buy it. If I had my hands around your neck for 20 seconds squeezing the life out of you, could you honestly believe I only meant to shut you up in blind panic (in any circumstance). Unless the two jurors misunderstood that the intent to kill had to be premeditated from the point he left his flat. |

Most have now been at least partially explained: The pizza Yeates bought a pizza as she walked home on the night she vanished. The receipt was found at her flat but not the pizza nor its box. She had not eaten it. The explanation: Tabak admits that he ate pizza on the evening he killed Yeates but denies it was hers. He claims he took the pizza and its box from her flat after killing Yeates and dumped it in a municipal bin. The prosecution suggested Tabak had eaten it. The two bottles of cider Yeates also bought two bottles of cider on her way home. This led to speculation she had bought one for her and one for a guest she was expecting. The explanation: CCTV footage of Yeates in the off-licence was shown in court. She picked up one bottle of cider, stepped away, then returned and grabbed a second, suggesting it had been a spontaneous purchase and was for her. According to the defence, Yeates opened one of the bottles and may have taken a sip from it before she was killed. When Yeates's boyfriend, Greg Reardon, returned home on Sunday evening he says he found the opened bottle and finished the drink. Tabak claims Yeates offered him a drink but he refused as he was driving later to pick up his girlfriend. The sock When Yeates's body was found one of her socks (in fact, one of Reardon's socks she had borrowed) was missing. One theory was that the killer had kept it as a trophy. The explanation: Tabak claims the sock fell off in Yeates's flat and that after he moved the body to his home he went back to her flat, took the sock and put it in a municipal bin. What happened to Yeates after she vanished? There was a great deal of speculation following Yeates's disappearance and after her body was found. Was she held captive before being killed? Is that why her body was not found for eight days? Was she left alive by the side of the road in sub-zero temperatures to die of hypothermia? The explanation: both the prosecution and defence accept she was killed soon after arriving home on the night she was last seen alive, and her body was dumped in a roadside verge not long afterwards. The jury system is a joke.People being judged by a set of morons in most cases.I did 2 weeks of it and was amazed by how thick some of the people were.This guy was guilty no doubt and the right decision reached in this case,but I think cases should be dealt with by judges.The days of 12 people good and true should be ended.

The jury system needs to go. A lot of trials are complicated and full of legal jargon that you are going to get some people just doubting the evidence.

Many juries are too easily confused and a good barrister can create doubt in their minds when there really should be none. Quite how anyone can believe you can throttle and strong young woman to death by mistake is a mystery. Judges as well are often too far up their own arses to sum things up in a way a jury can understand.

I think that the time is coming when something must change. There are cases where the Internet and social networking are jeopardising trials. And in other cases where complex science is used in evidence or expert testimony debated that very few people are in a position to judge, however intelligent they might be. Is the average judge in any better position to weigh up expert testimony or complex science than the rest of us? I rather like the idea of a set of people debating the evidence, rather than having one, perhaps no better-informed, person deciding the verdict. It probably needs tweaking a bit for the times imo. |

Apparently Tabak's ex is believed to have moved abroad to start a new life. She met him through the Guardian's lonely hearts column, Soul Mates in 2008. Poor girl was so convinced he was innocent she went into shock when she realised he was responsible. She said they had planned to marry and start a family. |

His ex gf (assuming she has dumped him!)is the silent victim in all this.
It must have been an appalling situation for her to realise that the person she had planned her future with had done such a thing. She won't get a huge amount of public sympathy because she is not seen as the victim and she will always be associated with Tabak regardless of the fact that she was absolutely nothing to do with it. I wouldn't wish that situation on anyone and hope that she manages to start afresh. I reckon I would struggle to trust anyone after that. |

Disagree with the call to drop jury trials on here, particularly with some of the reasoning. It is true that a "clever" barrister can cause doubt in jurors, but we have a tough standard of proof for criminal trials - you have to be _sure_. If doubt can be created that easily and created in six people out of twelve, then guilt isn't proved imo.

He's only got about another 7000 days to go before he can be considered for release? Was the sentence indeterminate or a fixed 20 year jail term.If he VT is released at 53 i think that would be so wrong

Tabak is expected to ask for a move to Holland at the earliest opportunity.
With no family in the UK and a mother who is ill, he will qualify for a move under international prison transfer rules. But the final decision is down to the authorities. A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice has refused to comment on individual cases. |

It means he won't be considered for release until that point - 20 years.
To be honest, I doubt very much he's killed before. The stuff with the prostitute would suggest he was building up to this, and his attempts to cover his tracks after the murder looked amateurish. He'd have been caught sooner were it not for the snow. |

Vile images of children being sexually abused were found on Vincent Tabak's laptop, police sources have revealed.
An anonymous officer involved in the investigation said Tabak had 30 images depicting child pornography on his laptop computer at home. They were all category four images. 'Following his conviction for murder, I don't think the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) will prosecute. It just won't happen.' There are five levels of severity for offences involving indecent photographs of children, which start with images depicting 'erotic posing with no sexual activity'. Category four images depict penetrative sexual activity involving a child or children, or both children and adults. |
