707 cases in the UK
although the total remains low, the rate increase over the last 7 days or so is a real cause for concern, expect the media frenzy to reignite fairly soon things to watch out for: pandemic announcement (imminent) resistance to anti virals vaccine progress spread when flu season starts ability of govt to distribute anti virals / vaccine age groups of first fatalities the intensive care cases in Scotland have been in the 35-45 age group. this points to a virus similar to spanish flu where the virus latches on to a strong immune system causing a cytokine storm (ultimately this can cause massive organ failure) however a strong immune system will reduce the chances of becoming infected |

Strange goings on in the southern hemisphere. Chile now has 1,600 confirmed cases, making it top of the league for percentage of the population affected. And Australia has 1,200, over 800 of those in the state of Victoria.
I don't think it's a coincidence that it's the start of the southern hemisphere winter and flu season. It'll be interesting to see if it combines with human flu to make a virulent strain. |

Any idea how many cases of regular Flu there have been in the last couple of months?
and how many people have died from it? |
|
By:
Can anyone tell me how many people have died or been infected with "regular" flu in comparison to "swine flu" in the same period?
Dont new strains of flu appear every year or so,often resisitant to vaccine etc etc, sure people die like they do of anything, but i don't see one bit of clear evidence to suggest this swine flu is any more dangerous than a ride on a rollercoaster(sure it may come off the rails) |

Swine Flu = 25,555 Infections, 139 Deaths
1 roller coaster death so far this year....... |
|
By:
Nearly 6 billion people, 139 deaths.
Were these 139 perfectly healthy before catching the disease? I somehow doubt it. |
|
By:
thats alright then, as long as they werent perfectly healthy before hand then they are no loss..
mind you Studyform, after looking at your video for chit chats got talant, those extra pounds you are carrying could be the difference between life and death when the pandemic hits... |

That's a stupid post, Albi.
All I'm saying is there is money and fame to be made by 'scientists' and pharmaceutical companies with a great big scare like this. One which in global terms is barely noticeable. It is NOT a major pandemic, and the threatened millions have NOT been wiped out. Of those that were killed, most were ill anyway, and the disease was the final straw. There are hundreds of fatal diseases and conditions which are far worse than this 'flu', and of which most people are completely unaware. A few quid on leaflets and warnings for these would be as useful. |

see, this is how it works, we're turning on each other already!

I think we should ban the car....nearly 1300 people killed on Britain's roads this year alone...
|
|
By:
A bit extreme jimmy. just have a 5mph speed limit.
|
|
By:
No..I was more worried about the spread of this flu from people driving their vehicles from place to place...
|
|
By:
It'd spread less quickly at 5mph

25,555 infections, 139 deaths.... 0.005% death rate (bear in mind most people in the western world have received anti viral drugs so will be much higher if / when it hits the third world)
6 billion people in the world, lets take a conservative estimate that 1% of people become infected over the next year. (I have plucked this figure from the air I'll admit) World population is 7 billion meaning 70 million people will become infected of which 350,000 people will die...... if the death rate proves to be around 0.5% as expected, and say 5% become infected, Then I am sure your maths are of a level to realise the threat is one we should all be mindful of.. |

Albi,
re the 1% figure...I'd also be guessing but I believe the total in Mexico reached 5,000...and there have been few if any cases in recent days. This would be I think, 0.002% of the population of the country most severely hit. |
|
By:
Which...and my maths may be dodgy, works out at 700 people, using the assumptions made above. I'm sure if takes hold somewhere with very poor medical facilities the total may be higher, but it hasn't even been that big of a deal in Mexico.

From 22nd May
Mexico City has lifted all restrictions imposed last month, following an outbreak of swine flu across Mexico. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said no new infections had been reported for a week in the capital and there was no longer a need to wear mask in public places. The city virtually ground to a halt at the height of the flu emergency, with schools, bars and cinemas closed. Mexico's flu death toll rose by three to 78 on Thursday, officials said. Some 4,000 people have been infected. Authorities in the sprawling capital on Thursday lowered its four-level alert system from "yellow" to "green" - the lowest level. "We can calm down now," Mayor Ebrard said. "Now you can come to the city without any risk," he said, adding that there was "no longer any need" to wear masks in public places. |

25,555 infections, 139 deaths.... 0.005% death rate Dearie me. That's 0.5%, which is still 5x the normal death rate for seasonal flu. The issue is not how many people are dying of it today. A million people a year die of malaria. It's the future potential when it (possibly) mutates. That's the worry. You can avoid an awful lot of killer diseases by taking precautions, but flu is different. Short of pitching a tent on Rockall, you're not in control of the situation. he 1918 Spanish flu emerged in the spring, then went away. It reemergedin the autumn as the killer form. That's the issue here. Will it mutate into a killer flu and when will it do so? |
|

Dearie me. That's 0.5%, which is still 5x the normal death rate for seasonal flu.
no it isnt......... |
|
By:
yes it is,
|
|
By:
feck it , i dont know
|
|
By:
Fecking hell you are right!!!
jesus, things are worse than I thought!! New conservative estimate, 7 billion people in the world, 1% getting infected = 70 billion infections, of which 0.5% will die = tonights jackpot of 3.5million deaths |
|
By:
Is there any reason to think it will mutate into a killer flu?
|
|
By:
Nope. Except that that is known to happen with pandemic flus.
What is not known is whether that's the norm or the exception. It may be that there have been many 'Mexican swine flu' type epidemics in the past which never amounted to anything. They may just have disappeared without mutating into a killer diseae. Problem is, we don't know if that's the case as there would be no record of these mild epidemics. The pandemic which preceded the 1918 flu in the late 19th century was not nearly as bad as 1918. It occurred in 3 successive years and was progressively more virulent each time. They do mutate into worse forms. We just don't know what the odds are. |

around 250,000 died in the UK as a result of spanish flu.
1 in 4 infected should be lower in 2009 25-45 is the age group most at risk |

Is it Spanish flu now?
Is there any reason to believe more than a few hundred will die? Not may die, will die? |
|
By:
I'm drinking a cup as we type, Cath.
I noticed on BBC news earlier how they mentioned several times (for twerps), that there IS NO NEED TO PANIC, and THERE ARE NO SIGNS WHICH SHOULD CAUSE PEOPLE TO WORRY. Still don't let that stop you. |

A family member of mine is in quarantine with suspected swine flu, she works in a school .... results back in two days !
|
|
By:
Schalke sorry to hear that.
I'm afraid we will be hearing more and more of these kind of stories unfortunately. I wouldn't be suprised if in the next two weeks we will be hearing all schools will be shutting early for the Summer. Trouble is if they think this time of year is bad, you wait till Autumn/Winter flu season kicks in. Let's hope this Swine flu stays the same strain. |
