For some unknown reason, the excellent 'Fight Of The Week' is being transmitted on Ch5 at five to five on Wednesday morning.
This programme (which shows very recent fights from the USA) is usually shown on Friday night/ Saturday morning, at a more realistic hour. The world has gone mad. |
|
By:
I caught the last 5 rounds Tommy.
Gogolazde (Georgian, southpaw) was far too good for Davis (U.S. orthodox) and won comfortably despite losing 3 points (2 in round 12) for holding. He wasn't powerful, but just far too quick for Davis to cope with. |
|

I'm glad somebody caught it, AITL.
I really enjoy watching this programme usually, especially with Teddy Atlas's commentry. What a ridiculous time for it to be shown. |

Surprisingly low for this time of day.

Thanks for getting this thread back, AITL.
I watched a great clip on KOTV last week of the Tony Zale v Rocky Grazziano middleweight championship fight of 1948. Jale landed a fantastic lefthand to K.O Rocky, after knocking him down several times earlier in the fight. Zale is one of the less remembered greats now, but he certainly was an excellent boxer. |
|
By:
I thought some semblance of decency had returned to Ch4, as KOTV was on at 01:55 last Sunday (Monday morning).
Unfortunately, they are showing BB trash again at that time tonight, so KOTV is on at 04:45 |
|
By:
I already moaned about that to Mrs AITL.
She said ' You say that every week.' ...:) |
|
By:
Hello, AITL.
You should hear me moan about the times they televise boxing! It's really taking the mick though. 2am is very late for it to be shown, let alone almost 5am. |

There is no boxing on terrestrial tv later. |

Tommy, been some delays but I eventually subscribed to DeAgostinis Boxers by e-mail as we're so far from a newsagent.
Issue 15 is about Jack Johnson and shows 4 fights, Burns - 1908 Ketchel - 1909 Jeffries - 1910 Flynn - 1912 Not seen them yet but looking forward to it over the weekend. |

Sounds terrific, AITL. I'll try and get that issue.

Boxing on Ch5 now.
Fight Of The Week - Recent bouts from across the Atlantic |

They were showing some 1966 highlights the other day on ITV during the interval of one of the matches.
They showed a brief interview with Brian London after his fight with Clay as he was then. "You told me he was fast", he said to the interviewer. "Why didn't you tell me he was like bloody greased lightning?". It was quite amusing. I reckon (and have heard) that London had a good sense of humour. I saw him ejecting someone from a disco, as we used to call them around '69 in Blackpool. "And don't ** come back", he said. "Otherwise you'll be going home in a suitcase". I never did work that one out. |

Bloody hell, this thread is a year old in less than 2 weeks.
|
|
By:
Yep, and kq who started it hasn't been seen for about 6 months.
|
|

I saw the Brian London clip yesterday, Canny. It really made me laugh.
It's a shame Kq has been missing for some time. Definitely one of the better forumites on here. |
|
By:
Evening Tommy. It was the "way" Brian said it that was so funny, more than what he said.
Yes, I hope kq's ok. The guy's had a couple of heart attacks if I remember correctly, and seemed to be a bit depressed on his last few posts. |

One of my FAV fights-----Jake La Motta Vs Sugar Ray Robinson 14 feb 1951
Robinson took the title off La Motta by a TKO, they called it the St Valentines Day massacre, but no matter what Robinson hit La Motta with, he just wouldn't go down. Got the actual fight on tape............pure class. |
|
By:
Hello Canny.
Yes, the way Brian said "...like bluddy greased lightning!" and the look on his face when he said it was really comical. I remember Kq had suffered a heart attack previously. I also hope all is well with him. He also started at around the same time as this thread: 'Your favourite poet'. Unfortunately, that dropped off the forum sometime around last Christmas and can't be retrieved anymore. It was another terrific thread. |
|
By:
Robinson was Ali's boxing hero stewarty b. The best pound for pounder of all time, many reckon.
Tommy, it's just come to me. I have kq's e.mail address. We talked about football programmes some time ago. He's a collector and I have hundreds gathering dust. I was suppose to send him a list of what I had with a view to selling the wanted ones. Never got round to it, like dozens of other things in my life. I'll e.mail him and report back. |
|
By:
Stewarty, although I've only ever seen clips of the fight (not the whole contest) it's one of my favourite fights too, even though it was a 'boodbath' for Jake.
As you will know, from being another 'Raging Bull' fan, the fight is featured with blood dripping off the top rope when the ref stopped the contest. Even so, Jake staggers over to a dumbfounded Robinson to say: "You couldn't put me down Ray". His actual words were: "You couldn't drop me! You never dropped me!" I heard Jake interviewed on the radio not so long ago and he still thinks his greatest moment was not being K.Od by Ray in that fight. By the way, one of Jake's quips (after fighting him 6 times) is: "I fought Sugar Ray so often I almost got diabetes" |

*bloodbath
Please do, Canny - and send him my regards. |

E. Mail sent as follows Tommy.
Hi kq, cannyman here from the Betfair Forum. I've still to sort those footy programmes out but I'm getting near doing that job. I was on your thread tonight (yes it's still there, the favourite fight thread) and we were wondering how you're keeping. Tommy sends his regards. Send me a brief reply if you've time and I'll report back on the forum. A few people have asked about you. Take Care Regards |

A good e-mail, Canny.
