Too late for me Tommy.
Kevin Mitchell fights soon, but last time I looked he was 1/33. I need some sleep, so goodnight to all. |
|
By:
It was too late for me too, AITL.
It seems like Ricky was fortunate with the decision. It's not always easy to step up a weight division, even if you're very skilful. He might now have to rethink his plans to fight Mayweather soon. |
|
By:
I scored it a draw, thought Hatton won his rounds less convincingly than the ones Collazo won but he still won them, think the knockdown in the 1st was crucial. Surprised at the judges scores but Hatton was always coming forward.
Was always likely to be a tough fight against a southpaw. Agreed with Jim Watt re: Hattons weight gain between fights, he needs to cut it out, tough on the body. Think he will drop down and maybe look for Cotto, think he'd have big trouble with Mayweather. Knackered now, wish he was still fighting in M/cr. |

Kean, I've been saying for some time, I'm very concerned with Ricky's diet regime between fights. I read in the paper the day before the fight, he was getting the chefs at his hotel to cook him a full English breakfast yesterday morning.
When I saw him on a fight programme about a month ago, he was carrying far too much lard. I don't think it's a good thing to let yourself go between fights - certainly not if you're of a light weight. Heavyweights can get away with it, to some extent, but it's not a wise thing to have your body constantly fluctuating between many pounds of extra weight and your true fighting weight. It will inevitably take it's toll. |

Boxing on terrestrial tv later (approx 35 mins):
Ch4 - 02:15: KOTV - Boxing magazine. |
|
By:
Featured in the 'Gold' slot on KOTV was the 1940 fight between Joe Louis v Johnny Paycheck.
Joe was pulverising Johnny in the first round and it was all over in the second, when Joe landed a tremendous right cross that k.od Johnny. The supreme skills of Joe are always worth watching whenever his fights are shown. |

You're telling me, 13 stones 1987, almost 18 stones now...:( |

Never mind, AITL. I'll bet you could still beat Audley Harrison, with a bit of training.
Excerpts of his latest bout v Guinn was shown at the end of the programme (the entire fight was featured on Fight Of The Week, the other week) He looked far more in shape than he had done against Harrison, but he still has no idea. I mentioned on this thread, when the full fight was shown, the only highlight was listening to Joe Frazier, who was in the studio commenting at times. Poor old Joe didn't know what to make of either of them . He still looked in great shape and I'll bet he could still beat most of the current crop of heavyweights. |

There is no boxing on terrestrial tv tonight.

I don't think, in fact I know, that we'll never see an era like the Ali-Frazier years again.
|
|
By:
Tommy, any idea if the Hatton fight is going to be screened again. No way I was going to pay 15 for it, seeing as I'm stumping up 42.50 a month. I feel sorry for Hatton. Never been on terrestrial TV, and missed out on a lot of exposure, although he has said he's not interested in publicity. Just wants the titles. A great fighter and a very decent bloke.
|
|
By:
Just remembered you've resisted Sky so far Tommy, so you're hardly likely to know the answer.
|
|
By:
You're correct, Canny. I don't know when it's likely to be shown again, sorry.
I also think Ricky is a nice bloke, but it doesn't look like he's done himself any favours falling out with Frank Warren. Such is the way in the boxing world, re fighters, managers and promoters. I hope everything turns out well for him. |

Boxing on later (Thursday morning):
Ch4- 01:15: KOTV Classics The fight listed on Ceefax is: Thomas Hearns v Iran Barkley |
|
By:
Thanks for that, Tommy. I'll keep my eyes peeled.I'm sure I've seen pay per view fights shown on Sky before, usually a week later. Just want to make my own decision. Lucky to get the decision according to some quarters.
|
|
By:
I'm sure you can catch up with the fight later in the week, Canny, from what I've seen about Sky programmes.
KOTV Classics was very good tonight. As well as the Hearns v Barkley fight, they also showed Jimmy Ellis v Jerry Quarry from 1968. Jimmy was a very astute fighter and avoided Quarry drawing him in to fight on the ropes. Ellis got the decision. |

From the Manchester Evening News, no real surprise to hear Hatton intends to drop back to light welter, sensible decision imo.
RICKY HATTON: Bruised fighter after his victory RICKY Hatton is aiming to move back down to the light-welterweight division - unless a showdown with Floyd Mayweather appears on the horizon. The new World Boxing Association welterweight king says that Saturday night's close-run victory over Luis Collazo in Boston has convinced him that 10 stones is his natural division. Now he is seeking a clash with the winner of the WBC lightweight clash between Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas on June 3. Both men would be willing to move up five pounds for a lucrative pay-day against the Hyde Hitman. That fight would be Hatton's first choice, although Castillo is already pencilled in to face Miguel Cotto for the WBO light- welterweight title in November. "I would like to fight the winner of Corrales v Castillo," Hatton told M.E.N. Sport after arriving back at Manchester Airport. "Unless it is worth my while, I would like to campaign at light-welterweight now. "I felt stronger at welter, but because I am a natural light-welter I am giving the opponent a head-start." A clash with the winner of the clash between Mexican Castillo and American Corrales would be box-office attraction in the States. Both men made a big reputation with an explosive bust-up a year ago, which Corrales won in the 10th - only for Castillo to KO his opponent in a re-match five months later. But another option would be for Hatton to fight in England for the second of his three-fight deal with the American sports channel HBO - with a mandatory defence against German fighter Oktay Urkal and even a showdown with domestic rival Junior Witter being mentioned. Decision "I am sure I will be back in the States soon, but if they want me to have a mandatory over here it would be no problem whatsoever," said Hatton. Hatton says the Collazo fight, when he was given the decision by all three judges, was the hardest of his career. He said: "I am not saying I won't fight at welterweight again, because I have to keep my options open and have just won a world title at that weight, but light-welter is my division." Hatton's camp had misgivings about Collazo from the off-set. In fact, they turned him down as an opponent once, as trainer Billy Graham felt the New Yorker's slick, spoiling southpaw style would be a poor choice for his man's American championship debut. But a succession of misfortunes meant it was Collazo or no fight, and Hatton is always willing to fight anyone. He explained: "Seven weeks ago I was due to fight Juan Lazcano at light-welter, and then it changed and I had to move up to welterweight in seven weeks. "Normally you need two or three fights to develop into the weight, but I had seven weeks. So I won a world title out of my weight division, which gives me a buzz. "Collazo will be avoided like the plague from now on - no-one will want to fight him." Hatton has tired of talk about Witter over the years, although it is a fight British boxing fans would love to see. But the Bradford fighter can land the scrap he says he has been chasing for six years if he beats DeMarcus Corley when they meet for the WBO light-welterweight title in the summer. The question is whether HBO would accept Witter as an opponent, and the Yorkshireman has done little to impress Stateside audiences so far. But time is running out for Hatton if he sticks to his vow to be retired by the age of 30. "I think I will give it three years, at the very outside, and then I will be done," he said. "In that time I want to fight Mayweather, and fight in Vegas and Madison Square Garden - I would be disappointed to retire without that happening." |

I also think he'd be better off dropping down again, Kean, and getting his weight/diet completely under control.
Good post. |

There is tonight:
ITV 1 - 10:30: Big Fight Live: Amir Khan v Lasio Komjathi |
|
By:
There is also amateur boxing on BBC1 now:
England v Russia from York Hall, Bethnal Green. |
|
By:
I watched the bouts up until the racing came on, on Ch4, and flicked between the two channels thereafter.
It was good to see Frankie Gavin again after his Commonwealth Games fights. He looks a very good prospect along with Jamie Cox, who also won gold at the games, if by default (his opponent pulled out of the final bout). There was good news for the amateur boxers, as extra funding for them was sorted out last week. Meaning; most of the top prospects can now stay at amateur level and learn their craft without having to turn pro too soon. There was also a nice tribute piece about Floyd Patterson. As well as showing a few clips of his fights, it was said that most in the fight game acknowledged him as one of the finest gentlemen in boxing. Steve Bunce commented, he'd met about 30 former World Champs and Floyd was undoubtedly the nicest he'd ever met. |

Live boxing on ITV1 now.

It was good to see Khan face a better quality opponent than previously in his pro career. He also showed he could take a punch, when he was caught with a good right in the 4th round.
However, he was caught because his hands were too low for most of the fight. He still needs to improve on his technique before facing 'the big boys'. I also hope he doesn't continue with the showboating he occasionally turned to last night. In the interview after the fight, he said people need to be entertained. That is correct, but they'd rather see him win than get clobbered because of silly tactics. Still, it was a good learning experience for Amir and one which he can only benefit from. |

Thanks to the ultimate garbage being shown on Ch4 in the early hours (I'll give you one guess what it is) tonight's (Monday morning's) edition of the excellent weekly boxing programme is not being transmitted until an even more unrealistic time.
For those who are still awake: Ch4 - 04:20: KOTV - Boxing Magazine |

I missed it, unfortunately.
There is no bvoxing on terrestrial tv later. |

There isn't any boxing on either...

lol Tommy,
just listenibg to the Ali V Bugner fght, 1975, I must be mad as the telly is around the corner in the lounge and I can't see it......:) |
|
By:
Crikey, AITL, it's some years since I saw that fight.
I'll bet just listening to it is better than watching most of the rubbish that's on the box these days. |
|
By:
You aint joking Tommy, I just clicked on the BB7 forum, they've started over 200 threads today on the rubbish, so I bought the first ever post back to the top, and called them a bunch of saddos :):)
|
|
By:
Good for you, AITL.
It's amazing to me how people can watch such mindless stuff. By the way, there is a thread on 'Other Sports' requesting a separate boxing forum . It's a poor indicator of today's society that BB7 gets it's own forum and boxing is classed as minority interest. |
|

I've put my t**ennorth on there Tommy.

I'm glad you have - and couldn't agree more.

Boxing on terrestrial tv tomorrow morning:
Ch5 - 04:55 - 06:00: Fight Of The Week What mind-boggling scheduling. |
|
By:
They're showing the Watson Eubank fight at the moment on Sky 442, (not the one where they both pushed themselves to the absolute limit, and which resulted tragically for Michael) but the fight a few months before in June '91. I'd find it hard to watch the rematch knowing the tragic outcome of it.

Boxing on later (Thursday morning) at yet another ridiculous time slot:
Ch4 - 03:55: KOTV Classics. Featuring Cassius Clay v Archie Moore 1962. |
|
By:
5 TO BLEEDIN' 4.
No chance of that at all. |
|
By:
I know, it's absolutely diabolical. This is a really good programme as they usually show about 4 fights from different eras.
Guess what's on from 12:40 till five to four? |
|
By:
I know.
Braindead television. |

Got it in one.
