It was a good progamme, as usual, last night.
In the 'gold' slot, they showed Lennox Lewis v Mike Weaver in 1991. Lewis landed a cracking k.o punch in the sixth round. It should be a good fight this coming Saturday between Judah and Mayweather. There are a lot of very decent welterweights around at the moment. If anyone is still up - or just getting up at 05:10 on Tuesday, Ch5 are showing Paul Weir v Jake Mattala on Boxing Classics. Crazy scheduling, yet again. |

Well, I didn't watch it - and I doubt many people did.
What a daft time to show this great sport. |

Yet another crazy time later (Thursday morning) to show a vintage fight:
Ch4 - 02:40: KOTV Classics - Jake LaMotta v Eugene Hairston |
By:

By:
The programme is on any time now.
Joe Frazier also features. |
By:
Hairston [ a deaf and dumb fighter ] had a 60-1 amateur record and had gone 16 fights unbeaten as a pro until Jake outpointed him comprehensively.I've never seen that fight before ,thanks for the reminder TT.Head of granite that La Motta fella!

By:
I'd seen the programme before, JP. It was well worth watching again though.
Jake certainly was one tough cookie. Everytime I see one of his fights, it reminds me of how well DeNiro emulated his stance in The Raging Bull. It was also a good reminder of how commentators in the 50s used to let the action speak for itself, instead of the non-stop ramblings during sport, of the ones today. |

A decent fight last night between Montell Griffin v Norman Jones.
Jones won this light heavyweight clash by unanimous decision. They were both very short for their weight - around 5' 7" for Jones. No boxing on terrestrial tv at the moment. |

They showed a great clip on the 'Gold' slot, a welterweight championship fight from 1951 between
Carmen Basilio v Johnny Saxton. It was a cracking contest with the ref stopping the fight and Basilio winning. They also showed an interview with Evander Holyfield. He's been passed fit and hopes to be fighting again later this year. I hope he's not another, who goes on far too long after he should have finished his career. |

Earlier today ITV (council Telly) showed the old Corrie episode where Ken found out abour Mike and Dreary... A decent row...Not really a fight i know but decent anyway.

There was some terrific action on Eurosport Uk Tonight. Unfortunately I was in the pub, and there was no sound. It was all old stuff. Finished up with Ken Buchanan (who I instantly recognised from his Tartan shorts) against a very young Roberto Duran in 1972. Ken seemed to take a very low blow at the end of the fight but it was enough for Duran to win the fight. Good stuff.
By:
I remember watching that at the time it was first shown, Canny.
Great fighter was Duran. Undoubtedly one of the best ever. |
By:
Tommy, I've just been checking through the listings on Eurosport UK. (410 On Sky), although if I remember correctly you don't have Sky. Tonight (Thursday) it looks like the programme I saw is being repeated. It actually says on the info for the programme, Baby Jake Matlala v Corrie Sanders, both of whom were on the programme last night. Must admit I've never heard of them. Worth watching if you get the chance.
By:
Canny, you're correct, I don't have Sky.
But luckily, a lot of the old fights are shown on Ch4 and Ch5. Perhaps they're repeats of Sky programmes? 'Baby Jake' was a terrific little fighter. Have a look at him later. Ch4 have a programme on tonight worth a look (if anyone's still about!): 03:10 - KOTV Classics: Arturo Gatti v Micky Ward - 2002 |
By:
'Tonight' meaning: Thursday morning - 3:10am.
Yet another crazy time for boxing scheduling. |
By:
Tommy, if you sign up to Sky, it will cost you hardly anythinf for the basics, and Eurosport is included I'm fairly sure.
By:
11.50 a month with Telewest, which includes Eurosport.
By:
Thanks Canny. I know I'll probably have to sign up before long, but it's always been something I'm very reluctant to do.
I hate the fact that they deprive young kids from following a lot of sport (particularly boxing) just because their parents can't afford to pay for Sky. |

To the top again, if anyone wants to watch boxing.
By:
I watched the Jackson v Graham fight.
It was good to see the fight again and remember how skilful and fast a boxer Graham was. Unfortunately, although clearly winning and Jackson suffering a damaged eye, Herol was knocked out by a devastating blow. It really was a fantastic k.o punch. It was likely that the ref would have stopped the contest after that round because of Jackson's eye, so Graham was doubly unlucky. |
By:
i remember watching that Jackson v Bomber fight.... it took the bomber right off his feet...a devastating punch.... i think @ the time McCallum was the best in that division.
