I couldn't access the forum very well last night, so couldn't post that Ali v Chuvalo was on Boxing Classics on Ch5 at 2:30am.
This was a title fight from 1966. Ali toyed with him in the early rounds, but Chuvalo kept plugging away. Ali won (of course) Why do they have to show these great old fights at such ridiculous times? |

George was a tough Canadian, not known for their boxers.

No boxing on terrestrial tv tonight, but now that the Commonwealth Games has started, there will be on the BBC transmission at some time.

prob not the best 'fight' but calzaghe vs lacy must be the best performance by a british fighter for 50 years. Lacy was a real fighter and Joe mashed his head repeatedly, lacy couldn't get a shot in, this world class fighter was outclassed totally by the widest margin, there were no excuses, JoeC was the biggest man in the world for 45 minutes and will go on and we just have to get behind this massive champ

The Impaler, it was indeed a brilliant display from Joe.

KOTV was good last night.
On the round up slot, they said Danny Williams has pulled out of his next fight and Scott Harrison's 25th of March fight has been cancelled. The vintage clip was of a 1929 World Heavyweight title fight between Jack Sharkey and Tommy Loughran. Loughran had given up his lightheavyweight crown shortly before the fight, to step up to the heavyweight division to make more money. Tommy had a very upright stance - typical of boxers early in the century. Jack was too powerful for him and knocked him out in the third round. The commentator mentioned during the fight that 'Slapsie' Maxie Rosenbloom was fighting Jimmy Slattery for the vacant lightheavyweight title. They fought in 1930 and Max won. For those who remember the great old gangster films, Max often played a 'heavy' in them, mostly in a comedic fashion. |

I'm now heavy enough to train.
Beginning to look like Danny Williams, bar the colour of course. |
|
By:
That's made me chuckle, AITL!
Jack Sharkey was very powerfully built, especially in the upper body and arms, yet there wasn't a peck of excess weight on him. Which, as we know, all good heavyweights used to be like. The lard buckets of recent years would have been kicked out of the game, in days gone by. |

I watched some of that Tommy. The Welsh asian kid (Nasir) was very good, but may have to brush up in the next bout.
I was watching it ia bits and pieces but I think he's drawn to fight the English kid who had the tear up with the kid from Swaziland. I thought that was the best fight of the 3 I saw. Nasir the better boxer, but the English kid, (can't even remember his name) can dig a bit, and he just srugeed off having his nose broken. Nasir may not be dancing so much if he catches him. The soldier from Lesotho was pretty good as well, he stopped his opponent. |
|
By:
I only saw a little of it too, AITL. I remember Nasir from the other week, when they were showing amateur boxing on BBC.
It should be a good fight between him and the English lad. I've just seen in the paper that there is more boxing coverage on from about 03:15 (too late) but there is further coverage on at 11:15 on BBC1 in the morning. |

Thursday, for me. Watched a bit today but don't know who I was watching as I was trying to do about 4 things at once.
|
|
By:
Our lad named Perkins seemed pretty good today, AITL. He was the lad from Liverpool on the ABAs a short while ago, I seem to remember.
I think he's fighting in the semis tomorrow (Thursday morning) |
|
By:
Saw Nasirs semi-final fight this morning.
Excellent tactical battle. If you didn't see it you'll have to wait until 11-15 a.m. India v Nigeria was a good fight as well. |
|
By:
Well, there were a few mixed fortunes on the programme that's just finished.
Perkins didn't perform to expectations, so he's not in the final, but a lot of the blokes from the UK are. Price was lucky to finally get the decision over the Indian chap in the superheavyweight division (on the standing 3 count rule) as the referee was hopeless and the Indian bloke had outboxed him until the fourth round. It should make for an interesting final between him and the Welshman. I enjoyed the Nasir fight, AITL, and the lad that beat him looks pretty useful. As does the lad in the next bout shown (was he named Gavin?) who outscored his opponent by the third round. The finals on Saturday should be worth watching. |
|
By:
That was Frankie Gavin, Tommy and he was very good indeed. He's an ex-sparring partner of Amir Khan.
I think the standing 8 count rule needs looking at. Price was knocked down 3 times but was allowed to carry on. If the Indian was allowed to carry on, Price would have had to knock him out, or lose the fight. And as for the commentator saying the Indian was **ing, that was rubbish. If I was in front on points and one more knockdown puts me out, I'd have spat out my gumshield The clock stops, but at least I would have got a breather. When you've outpointed your opponent by better boxing, and he suddenly wakes up and starts to thump you, at 6 feet 8 and 17 stones you need all the help you can get over the last minute. |
|
By:
I agree with you there, AITL.
If it had been the other way around, Ritchie Woodall and the other commentator would have been calling for Price to do anything he could think of, to hang on to his points lead until the end of the fight. Price was very fortunate to get past the second round. |
