Tommy - I know it only takes one punch to win a fight but do you think the Lacey camp should have thrown the towel in?
|
|
By:
Personally, I do, Bobby.
The bloke was taking too much punishment and I would think he'll probably never be the same again. A really hard fight like this, is enough to finish anyone's career. |
|
By:
The damage sustained by both Frazier and Ali in the 'Thriller in Manilla', meant both of them were never the same again.
It was very lucky no one died in that fight. Thank goodness Joe's corner pulled him out at the end - although Joe didn't want them to. |

Superb. Awesome. Brilliant.
I haven't seen a boxing lesson like that since The Greatest destroyed Cleveland Williams 40 years ago. It shows that skill will outdo muscle all the time. In the opening round Calzaghe showed Lacy he wasn't afraid of his reputation, but a reputation never hurt anybody, and Lacy got his nose cut in the first two minutes of round one. I thought the first two rounds were great, but the third was unbelievably better, with Calzaghe ducking and weaving, sticking and moving. In the final 30 seconds Calzaghe threw 4 x 3 punch combinations that Lacy clearly had no answer to. At the end of the 3rd Lacy was slumped on his stool with his chest heaving, while Calzaghe stood in his corner, a psychological ploy borrowed from Ali to show that he was still strong and unbothered by the few punches he had taken. Round 4 saw Lacys right eye cut and the round went the same way as the previous 3. In the 5th Calzaghe was still finding it easy to pick Lacy off, and a 7 punch combination must have told Lacy his only chance of winning was to land that left hook. The fight never changed pattern throughout, but Calzaghe was sworn at by his corner, with ITV putting the bleeps in, as he was told to carry on boxing. But Calzaghe knew he had his man beaten and you can't blame a fighter for trying to knock out his opponent. I give Lacy his due for not giving in, he probably knew his chances were slim. It may have been wiser for Lacys corner to throw in the towel, but in between rounds it's a good bet Lacy was telling them not to do it in the hope of landing a left hook, and knocking Calzaghe out, or at least weakened him badly enough to try and knock him out. Although Lacy did ask his corner what round it was at the end of the 8th or 9th, he was still able to carry on. Calzaghe thoroughly deserves every accolade awarded to him in these posts. |

Great post, AITL.
I thought it would be a good fight, but I never imagined it would be as terrific as it turned out to be. They kept showing little bits about Joe before the fight while he was preparing. He had earphones on and was listening to music and even yawned when they were taping up his gloves. I was a bit worried he might be over condident, but he was obviously so physically and mentally well prepared for the fight, that he was really 'in the zone'. It was great to see him after the fight pay due respect to his father for training him - and to see his father kiss him. A fight to remember. |

It was a good programme again last night.
In the vintage slot they showed clips of a 60 year old bantamweight world championship fight between Ortiz and Castillo. It was a good scrap, with Ortiz remaining Champ after knocking out the game Castillo (who was only 4'11") |

Ch 5 - 03:30: Boxing Classics - Joe Frazier v Jimmy Ellis |
|
By:
It was a World Heavyweight Championship fight from 1970 at 'The Garden'.
I only saw the fourth round, whereby Joe floored Jimmy twice, but Jimmy managed to get up. The fight was declared a TKO in the fifth, after Angelo Dundee pulled Jimmy out of the contest after the bell had rung. In the post fight interview, Joe admitted that Jimmy had won the first two rounds, but Joe felt he'd got him in the third and was confident he would win very soon afterwards. What a shame this wasn't shown at a more reasonable time for all fight fans to enjoy - especially as it was 'the golden age' of the heavyweight division. |

Here's one for you, Tommy.
Which world heavyweight champion was unique in that he never won a title fight? |
|

Off to dinner, back later.

Watching boxing on Eurosport while eating dinner.
Complete mismatch, 20 year old Russian with a record of 12-0 knocked out a former Yugoslavian, 41 years old, who has been a pro for just 5 years. He got him with a body punch. If I were him I'd retire while he's still in one piece. |

Was it Micheal Spinks? (Previous question)

I've just seen that ITV4 are doing a special programme about Joe Calzaghe on Thursday night at 10pm:
On Top Of The World. I wonder if my Freeview box will behave that night, so that I can watch it...? |

Not Spinks, Tommy

Hmmm, I'll have to have another think...

AM I TOO LATE 07 Mar 19:49
Here's one for you, Tommy. Which world heavyweight champion was unique in that he never won a title fight? Was it anything to do with when Bowe threw his belt in the Dustbin? Probably got the wrong boxer knowing me. |
|
By:
Ah, it sounds like a good call, Jp.
Whether it's right or wrong. |

Was Lewis Champ when Rachman beat him?
Thus, I'm having a stab at Rachman. |
|
By:
Meaning, that it wasn't a title fight between him and Lewis (but I think it was, actually!)
|
|
By:
Tony Tubbs, has just sprung to mind.
Was it him? |
|
By:
The one that kicked off just outside a pub in St Albans. Well good, especially when the rozzers got involved.
|
|
By:
Not Rachman or Tubbs, Tommy. ..:(
I wonder if Sabre has a headache yet...:) |

Thinking about one of your 'pass it on' quiz questions one night, AITL, is this a trick question?
