For boxing fans who may not have seen it, there is an excellent post on 'Other Sports' regarding the differences and reasons why boxers are pitched very early into big fights these days, compared to yesteryear.
The thread is entitled: 'boxing tonight - Kelly v Maludrotto...' by SOLIDCASH. The post is by Geoffthechef - 21 April @23:46 |

Boxing on terrestrial tv later (Thursday morning):
Ch4 - 03:30 - Boxing Classics: Max Schmelling v Young Stribling (1931) |

I would have really liked to have seen the fight.
Unfortunately, the time it was televised was as ridiculous as most of the boxing scheduling on terrestrial tv. |

There is no boxing on terrestrial tv tonight.

Boxing on later (Saturday morning):
Ch5 - 12:55: Fight Of The Week |

I watched the first two fights they showed.
Unfortunately, the heavyweight bout caused one of the boxers to be knocked down and he stumbled out of the ring, obviously not knowing quite where he was. No doctor came to him, either then, nor when he got back into the ring. A very poor show from the people in charge. He could have needed urgent attention. |

Boxing on shortly:
Ch5 - 12:55 : Fight Of The Week |

The fight was the latest fiasco of Harrison v Guinn.
The only highlight being Joe Frazier commenting on it, at times. Joe was at a complete loss to explain the style and fight-plan of both boxers. You could also gauge his frustration at today's heavyweight scene. Teddy Atlas also had a word with James Toney at ringside. Teddy told him he was far too fat when he fought Rachman recently and that he owed it to himself and all fight followers, to be more in shape in his next fight. Toney made various feeble excuses for his physical condition. I'm afraid the golden days of the 1960/70s heavyweights are long gone. Thank goodness some of us were fortunate enough to witness that terrific era and everyone can still see the great fighters of that time on tape. |

Sugar Ray Leonard is talking about Ricky Hatton on Radio 5 Live sometime before 10am this morning.
|
|
By:
He's on now.

Ray praised Ricky quite highly.
Not so, Audley Harrison. He said if he doesn't shape up and win impressively in his next fight, he should get another job. I think he was being kind... |

It was a good programme, as usual.
The 'Gold' slot was excerpts of Roy Jones Jr fighting Montel Griffen for the light heavyweight title. There is a grudge match coming up shortly between Australians; Danny Green and Anthony Mundine, over there. It should be a good fight. |

Ken Buchanan v Roberto Duran 1972 quality stuff. |
|
By:
Just seen the 13th round.
unbelievable decision by the referee. The punch is clearly after the bell. It is also clearly a low blow. The ref had just warned him for a low punch,90 secs before! Great fight. Classic boxer v fighter stuff. |

Lennox Lewis v Noel Quarless last night, but I missed it.

AA, Duran v Buchanan was a great fight indeed.

Hello Tommy, I've just read that Floyd Patterson has died.
Sad news, but we all end up there. |

Hagler vs Sugar Ray Leonard
|

Hello AITL.
Yes, it's a shame about Floyd, especially as he had been ill with both Alzheimers disease and prostrate cancer for some time. Ricky Hatton paid a nice tribute to him (he met him in 1997) by saying: "Floyd was a gentleman and really polite and that is exactly what being a champion is all about. As the first man to regain the world heavyweight title, he was a history maker. We are saying goodbye to a great champion." |

There is no boxing on terrestrial tv later.
