We have a bit in common Canny.
We both managed betting shops, both play guitar, both drive Jaguars, both hate Newham...:) Probably more. |

Thanks for the update, Canny. Keep it coming.

Not read all the threads, but if I ever see another Hagler v Hearns (esp Round 1) I will die a lucky man.

The anniversary of this thread was missed the other day.
Another 12 months which has flown by. |

I may watch that, Tommy.
|

By:
I turned it on, AITL, but ended up not watching any of it because we were quizzing.

I only saw 8 rounds, it was a bit boring to be honest, even for a world title. I fell asleep on the sofa.
Apparently, Urango was the 1/2 favourite, but from what I saw I had Rabah 7 rounds to 1 up by the end of the 8th. I gave round 3 to Urango. He was the puncher of the 2, but he only threw about 8 jabs in 8 rounds, and relied on getting in close for a punch to land. Rabah was quick, never stopped moving, and rained punches in from all angles. The number of punches they landed compared to what they threw was bad imo, they landed about 20% between them, with Rabah outscoring Urango easily. I don't know the result, but if Urango never landed any bombs, Rabah must have won easily on points. |

Just googled.Rabah lost.Apparently one of the clearest boxing robberies
in recent times. http://www.secondsout.com/World/news.cfm?ccs=225&cs=19841 |

Absolute fkn rubbish decision then.
I had Rabah in front by 79 to 73 after round 8 I gave Urango round 3. The only way for Urango to win from there was by K.O. If Rabah stayed on his feet, which he did, Urangos score could not exceed 113, and he STILL loses by 2 points. Urango was odds on, the 'heavy hitters' and the judges, must have had their money on. |

By:
Oh well, at least we have the Williams v Skelton fight to watch on Saturday night (!)
|
|
By:
Watching that debacle really brings it home how the heavyweight division is so very poor now.
It's enough to make you weep. |

There's a station on Sky that I've only just discovered. Channel 442 ESPN Classic is the name of the station. Features a lot of old sporting action with a fair bit of boxing.
Tonight at midnight it looks at the career of Paul Pender the American middleweight. Must admit I've not heard of him, but I've certainly heard of a couple of the guys he fights in tonight's programme, Sugar Ray Robionson and Terry Downes. Should be good. You'll have to get Sky Tommy. I know you don't approve on principle but look (or rather don't -:) ) what you're missing. |
|
By:
I was told on another thread you were LTIA.
|
|
By:
How's AITL campo? Frustrated or glad he's got the spare time, or a bit of both maybe?
|
|
By:
Canny, I know they show some great old fights on Sky that I would really enjoy watching.
It really pains me that the way things are going (less and less terrestrial sport) I may have to relent one day and sign up. I'm still holding out at the moment though! |
|
By:
Get it Tommy, you only live once. Tomorrow morning at 11am, Emile Griffiths (I'd forgotten all about him) Wasn't he the chap who was in that ill fated fight where the opponent died? Benny something?
|
|
By:
does this include UFC fights too?
|
|
By:
I don't think this particular channel does, although I have seen UFC on another Sky Channel. Not really my cup of tea.

Benny "Kid" Paret was the name of the boxer who died in 1962, aged only 25. They're showing the second of his 3 fights with Griffith tomorrow night. Live boxing not shown on American TV for 10 years after the tragic end to his last fight with Griffith.

Is that so, Canny? They didn't see the great Ali and co fights live in America in one of the greatest ever eras?
|
|
By:
I don't think so Tommy. You've got me wondering now. I'll see if I can get some confirmation of that with a spot of googling.
