We want to share an important update with our Betfair Community users.
Over the coming months, the Betfair Community platform will be winding down. The final active day for the platform will be December 21st. From December 22nd, users will no longer be able to access the platform.
Your discussions, insights, engagement, and, most importantly, feedback have helped shape the platform and guided innovation. Your feedback continues to be important to us, and we will continue to listen via our dedicated feedback channels, as well as through product testing and innovations.

They also tackle Heisenberg's uncertainty principle too, another concept that has been "mangled" by Lanza in his article.
These guys are physics prof's. As someone once said, in science there's physics, all the rest is stamp collecting. (Don't fully agree with that by the way ) |

As you know your physics will you watch this video and give me your feedback. It`s from The Royal Institution https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9tKncAdlHQ |

Jim Al-Khalili from the RI says if you can explain it there is a Nobel Prize in it for you Foin.
When are you being presented your award? ![]() |
By:
See it`s not Lanza `mangling` the double-slit experiment.
That is the view of the world of physics. Unplug the observer and you get light waves and not particles. |
By:
I'm not going to contradict Jim Al-Khalili. I've seen the double slit experiment performed more than once, one slit open shows particulate behaviour, two slits demonstrates wave behaviour. Have never seen the modification with the detector placed after the slits and can't explain it, not going to pretend otherwise.
By:
Consider the famous two-slit experiment. When scientists watch a particle pass through two slits in a barrier, the particle behaves like a bullet and goes through one slit or the other. But if you don’t watch, it acts like a wave and can go through both slits at the same time. So how can a particle change its behavior depending on whether you watch it or not? The answer is simple – reality is a process that involves your consciousness.

By:
Why are we here? To experience the physical world and to love God, to evolve.

Foin
Robert Lanza has not solved the double-slit mystery, he is using those findings to back up his own theory. |
By:
Why are we here?
To procreate. To take money from other forumites. Te despise the Labour Party. Tick. Tick. Tick. |
By:
What Jim hasn't explained is how the detector actually detects the particles and what it adds or subtracts when doing so. he hasn't said if there are any theories why it happens either (unlike Lanza who says that he knows why).
By:
I guess that you are talking potential interference by the detector(observer)
But i would have thought the greatest physics minds on the planet would have looked into that by now. |
By:
I have.
And nothing matters. |
By:
They probably have but if Lanza is correct and "the answer is simple" why doesn't Al-Khalili say so? Could it be that it's not so simple after all?

Go get your prize Taxi, always new that you was sharper than the average bear!

By:
*knew not new but you knew that

The science world needs facts, Lanza is offering a theory beyond the perceptions of scientific minds. It`s a rather large leap some might say. I find it interesting though. |
By:
When you watch the experiment with your eyes as I have done and as Lanza implies then you see the interference pattern. When you install a detector it alters something when it is switched on. it is a giant leap from here to say that "reality is a process that involves your consciousness".
I still don't agree with Lanza but have learnt something new, so thanks Angel. May say something later on the interpretation of how Einstein saw time but for now will be watching the cricket. Come on England, they have won the toss and will bat first. |
By:
Should be another stonking match Foin.
Yes the question that Lanza will struggle with is, where was the Universe before the spark of consciousness, if consciousness created it. More research is needed into this thing we call consciousness. |
By:
Why?
Who cares? |
By:
Muslims aren`t interested either Taxi.
By:
Who cares what muslims think about it?
By:
Who cares what you think about who cares about what?
By:
People that you'll never meet.
By:
You should get a Nobel Prize IF you can explain why Jim thinks you’d get a Nobel Prize for explaining why a detector that isn’t a detector (because it’s switched off) should interfere with a passing wave.
By:
Perhaps you don`t fully understand the set-up FM.
You should apply for that Nobel Prize. |

By:
Explain to me then why it is remarkable that the wavefunction doesn't collapse when the detector is off?
By:
FM
The reason Jim is suggesting that there is a Nobel Prize for cracking the central mystery in Quantum Mechanics.....is because it is the central mystery in Quantum Mechanics. |
By:
And that would be, for those of us who don't fully understand quantum mechanics as you do?
By:
Absolutely FM.
By:
Sam understood them in Quantum Leap.

Einstein thought that the separation of the past present and future is an illusion and that all time exists in the present. He also said that time has no independent existence apart from the order of events by which we measure it.
There are popular science books on this concept known as timelessness should you wish to learn more about it. half time in the cricket, just time to get a drink and a snack then settle back for the run chase. |
By:
....could go one step further......
...perhaps all time...as we perceive it...is also an illusion. |
