Basically he was a professor/philosopher who was a prominent Atheist all his life, like Dawkins and the like today.

Yet eventually through SCIENCE ended up believing in a Deity.

I enjoyed this thread when it first appeared and my opinion hasn't changed.

I firmly believe there was a man called Jesus that attracted a large following but his story was added upon, twisted and exaggerated. Chapters of The New Testament were created 70- 300 years after he died. Stories that did not match were either corrected or excluded and the fables as we know them were finalised a few hundred years A.D.

To say the Bible is the word of a God is nonsensical. It was created by Man for the control of Man by the newly formed Christian Church and worked well 400 years ago but is irrelevant now.

Religion may seem harmless but as we seen today in Tunisia people kill in the name of it.

I think as your time runs out you don't want it to end. My mate converted to Christianity after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I can't blame him, we all don't want it to end but unfortunately that's how I see it.

There may well be a Deity that created everything or maybe it was a giant chicken that laid an egg. Perhaps it was a Big Bang 13.7 Billion years ago? In any case all 3 have no bearing on my life but it's only the former that man tells me that that demands I worship it.

A good summary Ovalman.

Although Jesus had a large enough following to attract the attention of the Rabbis it wasn't all that large and the sect would probably have gone the way of many others after the death of their leader were it not for two important events.
The first was the conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus. Under his new name of Paul he built a branch of Christianity for the uncircumcised which meant that they didn't have to submit to Jewish customs.
The second and more important break was the conversion of Roman Emperor Constantine who attributed a victory in battle to a vision he had of a cross the previous day. Christianity became the religion of Rome and gained premier league status.

I think I'm coming round to the giant chicken hypothesis for the start of everything. Perhaps we should organise a Giant Chicken Day where we can all dress up in chicken outfits and throw eggs at politicians, vicars and all other vectors of religion.

He never turned to Christianity as far as I'm aware. Just came to the conclusion through SCIENCE that there is a Deity.

He's not gonna gain any extra brownie points from God (If he's real) for turning to him in the last few years of his life is he?

You don't have to believe in religion to believe in God.

How many other scientists have came to the same conclusion as ?

I would say (without evidence) that most scientists are Atheists.

There is no evidence for a god or gods never mind a god for a certain sect of one religion in one part of the planet.

If you read back on my posts I haven't ruled out a god or gods or a giant chicken. The Universe started from something and I'm uncomfortable with the Big Bang theory. The Big Bang require an inflationary period which seems a botch job. The Deity solution doesn't stick with me either as you have to then ask, who created the creator?

These are big difficult questions but some like "Is Jesus the son of God?" are easy to rule out.

If our species doesn't destroy ourselves (likely BTW) I think we'll eventually find the answer, just not any time soon.

-----------------------------

I couldn't think of the Roman emperor who turned to Christianity Foinavan so thanks.

Wasn't there a meeting where the Church "finalised" the Bible that we know? They ditched the stories that didn't match and changed the stories that contradicted?

You have to remember that stories about Jesus were written many years after he died. Some weren't even written by first hand accounts but are stories about stories. I've no doubt there was a man called Jesus, people crave power by different means and religion is one such way to gain power. The life of Brian scene were he is dropped by the aliens sums it up very well and is no more ridiculous than the Jesus claim.

My claim varies by what website you look at. I think its mainly because Atheism is not a religion or a belief system, it's more of a lack of evidence on a weighted scale.

I'd love to find a neutral survey that asks the right questions.

I don't believe in the Big Bang Theory either so we can agree there.

Who created the creator? Haven't scientists proved in infinite matter or energy? Perhaps he/she was always there.

Why not save a step and remove the creator?

I never said I didn't believe the Big Bang theory, I'm uncomfortable with it but all the evidence points to an observable Universe that is 13.7 Billion years old (I know how they got most of the evidence.) I just don't like the botch that is an inflationary Universe. It doesn't defy the laws of nature but they need it to square some circles.

If there is a creator he's a very benign one. He seems to have rolled the dice 13.7 billion years ago and forgot about it. Just save the step and remove him/ it.

No it’s just a theory basically we know very little about ourselves our environment and space.
Over 90% of the universe is said to make up of dark matter and dark energy. Again this is only a theory and again we know nothing about.
Of 6% percent of the universe the earth and ourselves, we even know very little about this. We don’t even fully understand something as common and basic as water, and some of its qualities like why are all snow drops and different pattern?
In other words we know fook all and to claim one way or another about the existence of some higher being is just a guess based on no scientific knowledge whatsoever.

cardifffc, you seem more miserable than Bob Geldof, what a surprise he's an Atheist. How do you know that there isn't a God exactly?

No one properly knows why were all here and we may never know.

I put this on an other thread somewhere but say for example, your betting on a sporting event and beforehand, your looking at all the form/stats/evidence to try and figure out what the result will be. Sometimes you get results which you didn't think were possible beforehand, as evidence suggested it wouldn't happen.

I can understand you not believing in a God but to totally rule it out? That would be ignorant also imo.

Ovalman, if you are looking for well researched historical books about the times of Jesus then you could do worse than read S.G.F. Brandon. Try this one for starters.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jesus-Zealots-Political-Primitive-Christianity/dp/0684310104/ref=pd_sim_14_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1DRB475NKEA3CKG1MXSS

It's a bit pricey but well worth it if you are serious about studying this period of history.

Brandon has written several other books, I got "The Fall of Jerusalem and the Christian Church" as a free download. It's quite heavy reading unfortunately. Also "The Trial of Jesus of Nazareth" is reasonably priced.

If you believe the Bible to be true then you believe lots of strange things including belief in Angels.
You believe that Noah found penguins and polar bears for his ark and you believe that after the flood koala bears found their way back to Australia from the middle East with nothing to eat on the way. Hey ho, God moves in mysterious ways.

I definitely believe in a Jesus Christ, I also believe in the Giant Chicken. I just feel the Big Bang is a better answer but what was before the Big Bang? No easy answers but JC is the least likely of the 3.

I do wonder a little if there are "dark forces" making people do evil things.
When you look at the medieval or nazi or communist genocides, or IS etc, it's easy to think maybe there is something really evil in there causing it. It's hard to understand how a fellow human can act like these sc*m.
