Barry, I went when Liverpool beat Palace 9-0, we stayed the night and the locals were as good as gold to us in the pub and nightclub afterwards.

Seriously.
If someone says to me - "I don't like London", and tells me they don't find it friendly and the like, I'm not remotely bothered. I'd probably agree. So even if I was the type who told locals it was better where I came from - which I'm not really, it still doesn't excuse this blind tribal loyalty. |

seriously tho, having moved to ellesmere port, which truly is a dump btw...i find the people here, on the whole ..much more unfriendly, a high proportion of even the women here are aggressive, they also have a stick together mentality which surpasses anything associated with scousers, etc...on thw whole, liverpool is a much nicer friendlier place than ellesmere port,at least.

I have been to liverpool quite a few times to watch football and lads weekends away. had quite a few good nights.
My friends and I are quite well spoken and we akll detected a certain attitude towards us from the blokes who assumed because we were from down south and spoke properly, we were rich, posh etc. we weren't. a good percentage of them had a chiop on shoulder. another thing i hate about people, is because they come from a rough city, eg liverpool, manchester, middlesborough etc they assume they are harder than you when they know nothing of you. I have boxed to ok standard and i used to hate these people giving you attitude cos they instantly assumed they were harder because i can talk proper and was educated like! i also lived abroad for a few years and was mates with loads of scousers. this isn't exaggeration. all the male scousers were dodgy. they sold drugs, robbed off people and generally ducked an dived. I got on with them but they completely lived up to their stereotype. |
By:
and we all detected a certain attitude
You ALL detected an attitude? Who had the attitude then? You or the other people? |
By:
The point being that there probably was no attitude at all.
It was probably just in your mind - and fuelled by some of the negative stereotypes you can see on this thread. Did that never occur to you? |
By:
Are you from Liverpool shab?
Are you bothered that some people think Liverpool/Liverpudlians seem different, or have provided them with an unfavourable impression? If so, why? |
By:
Having defended Scousers they are guilty of one thing.
They have ruined the Friday of the Aintree meeting. 40,000 drunken, shouting overdressed scousers is not a pleasant experience at a race meeting imo. The vast majority of them never attend a race meeting each year other than Aintree on Friday. It is horrible and I have vowed to watch at home in future. |

STUDYFORM 04 Dec 12:50
Gene. They do take offence, at everything. Curryisforlife 04 Dec 12:58 Study, they don't, not at everything, just being**ged off by people who've never been there. They bloody do and i live there too. you cant criticise liverpool or scoucers without starting a fight, they just cannot take even constructive criticism |
By:
oh and just in case im being too negative, id like to add that id rather sort the place out than live anywhere else! seems to me the older generation (who dont forget all lost their jobs when the trade all moved away) are the REALLY miserable ones, and although there are little sh!ts who give the place a bad reputation, young people on the whole are more positive. hopefully in 20 years, all these little issues will sort themselves out and conversations like this wont happen any more
By:
Study, I was born in Liverpool and lived there until I was 26. My parents still live there and I go home regularly.
The thing that always amazes me is that people feel threatened - or they say they feel that way for effect - when in fact it is their own outlook that is causing prejudice. For example, look at the last post - saying that if you critisize the city/people there will be a fight. Really? I have never seen that. Ever. |
By:
well i have, many a time these sort of threads are discussed amongst friends and colleagues and i find that scoucers, as much as they may try to hide it, get pi$$ed off if you criticise them and dont speak to you for the rest of the day or something silly like that. its just unnecessary pettiness and they need to accept that there are social problems round here that are more serious than in other areas without taking it so personally.
By:
Let me expand. I now live in Gateshead. When I first moved here, I started drinking in pubs that are known as 'rough'. Even the locals were surprised I was drinking in there.
"You don't want to go in there" I was told. "Watch your back" and so on. Guess what? I actually got to know the people, and surprise, surprise, they are actually nice blokes. Dodgy a fcuk, but nice guys. See? I tried to meet them rather than just stand at arms length and fall prey to a stereotype. |

get pi$$ed off if you criticise them and dont speak to you for the rest of the day or something silly like that. I get pi$$ed off when I meet somebody and they tell me about their hubcaps. IT JUST ISN'T FUNNY. Tell me a joke**ging the city off, and I will laugh at it. Stand there and rant about scousers this, scousers that and I will get a bit touchy - because you are lumping me in with some of the dregs of the city, then expecting me to be the same. If there was a paedo living in your street, and everytime somebody met you they said "Oh, hello, you not out looking for a kid to screw" you would get a bit upset, wouldn't you? |

Having defended Scousers they are guilty of one thing. They have ruined the Friday of the Aintree meeting. 40,000 of them attending ======================== I would have thought that kind of attendance number would have SAVED the National for future generations .. |

no thats not the kind of thing im talking about at all. can you explain to me why the people of liverpool seem to think life is all about what you can get away with? can you explain the blame and claim culture round here? - and dont tell me its the same everywhere, its terrible here which is why insurance premiums are so high. can you tell me why we all have to pay massive massive council tax? cause i think its to clear up all the sh!t that goes on. the place is in dyer trouble, and the ignorance of people towards the problems is worsening things

funny thing is..
i think i probably have put 3 or 4 threads up about my scouse mates.. 1 about him being "mental" so has to be on disability benefit.. which by the way, he was told he was being taken off.. he appealed.. lost.. appealed again and won.. same guy had an accident and is going for compensation for whiplash this friend is half black.. and takes offence to everything, and goes on about how he'll smash my head in etc(joking way) accuses everyone of being racist, and always goes on about kent vs liverpool in a fight, liverpool would smash kent etc etc my other mate was going to move down south and leave his girlfriend and kid.. told his mates he ditched her, when infact she dumped him cos she had a new bloke.. this is the one who has never worked before btw.. |
By:
oh and he accuses me of being pleased about hillsboro.. wtf is that all about..
By:
fkqmz,
I disagree! Council Tax is cheaper than West Dorset (for example). http://www.projectanalyser.co.uk/CouncilTaxTool/CouncilTaxBands.aspx Does that mean West Dorset has even more problems than Liverpool? The blame and claim culture is endemic in this country. It is not a Liverpool thing. The difference is that a scouser will tell you he is claiming, yet other people would (probably) be too embarrassed to mention it. Can you back up your assumption with evidence, ie, number of claims per head of population, so they can be compared with facts rather than assumption? |
By:
Oh, I forgot to mention insurance premiums.
I'm guessing here, but I reckon that Liverpool would be lower than most other comparitive cities due to it having one of the lowest crime rates. |
By:
lowest reported crime rates maybe?
By:
grew up with scousers, they congregated on about 3 different estates around town,i would rate them as 50/50,50% of them decent,50% other, luckily over the years they have become more integrated into the local community, but if you you hear loud people blowing their own trumpet 80% its a scouser.
By:
I think most people would report their car being stolen or their house being burgled, don't you think?
By:
its all akin to making out irish are thick
blacks have big willys italians are cowards germans are humourless scots are mean etc. theres good and bad in every town, same applies to the actual town's scenery or lack of. |
By:
Wrong guess shab.
Insurance premiums are just about the highest in the land. For example my car insurance is THREE times what it was in Essex. I suspect there is more unreported crime here than most other places. Also, I like to think my perspective is more general than what the various pubs/drinkers/nights out are like, and it's based on personal experience. In the nearly 5 years I've been here I have found it to be the least welcoming of the many places I have been to. From the horrible neighbours (no-one seems to get on with their neighbours much round here) - which is something I have never experienced, to the sour-face miserable women who barge their way round supermarkets, to the shutters on EVERY shop window in the city, to the crimes I have witnessed (street-robbery, bookies - I was area manager for - broken into, car wing-mirrors ripped off all down one street one evening), and including the complete lack of politeness nearly everywhere. Maybe my view is somehow jaded, but I'm well positioned to have formed it. |
By:
I was in a pub near Cheltenham the other week and the barman asked "Whose next?" when I was waiting at the bar.
I pointed to my right and said "He is" A minute later the barman again asked "Right whose next now?" I pointed to my left and said "He is" Neither of the blokes said anything or even acknowledged my gesture.I suspect they had never come across any such thing before. If I'd have done that in Liverpool or indeed most places in the North West of England most (not all)would give a nod of acknowledgement or even speak to you. |
By:
It seems to me everyone is basing their assessment on pubs or football matches. I'm sure there are unpleasant or impolite people in nearly every pub. There are chavs in every town and city. There run-down areas in every city. Crime and drugs are rife everywhere.
Liverpool has all this and more, but it's coupled with an attitude which is prevelant among much of it's population and which nowhere else seems to possess. |
By:
on the head nail
By:
if that attitude is more prevalent in scousers than other groups, it's prob only owing to negative stereotypes being cast towards them constantly which has formed that attitude in the first place.
