Lisa, if you want to be pedantic (either that or you are a bit stoopid), he actually said he opened his moputh. He didn't say he spoke.

I've been to Liverpool and thought it was quite good with a very good nightlife. Andy states that he's got two friends from there with the attitude us vs the World. Well with the attitude of the majority on this thread I feel its with some justification. By the way I feel Andy was being a bit facetious. Yes I'm sure they have some cause for getting a bad reputation but then again its the same all around the country with very few exceptions.

Had a great night out in Liverpool. Ended up in some bar with them all dancing on the tables and chairs like mad monkeys and making an absolute racket. I didn't even get me wallet nicked.

It always amazes me how people in this country can take offence to one region/country or another.
What does it matter, really? We're all just here by happenstance of birthplace - no matter where it is in the world. |
|
By:
unless you are scousers then its different
|
|
By:
I can confirm that scousers actually do say "They do do that there, though, don't they though?" I've actually heard one of them come out with it.

I went there a few years back to watch Palace beat them in the FA Cup. Me and a mate went out in the lash after and they were fine. In one pub in the city centre a group of lad clocked our accents. Was a bit concerned after they said they were Liverpool fans. In the end we had a beer together and chatted about the game. No problems whatsoever.

Must have been a gay bar Barry.

I've only been there twice, both times for a match at everton, spent a few hours in the winslow before and after the game each time, chatted with the locals and had a great time... everton won both games as well :(

It's not like anywhere else in the country, and much of the indigenous population is unjustifiably proud of just about anything that it can grasp.
The accent can be REALLY irritating (it has a mixture of northern and welsh which combine to form aarrrrggghhh shut-up!!!), and 95% of people only talk about football. Much of the city is run down, or a mess. I'd never been here before I moved here, so had an open mind. It is nowhere near as cosmoplitan as most other cities in the UK, and not as welcoming. There are a couple of good things. It's comparatively easy to get about, transport and parking are good. Restauants and take-aways are plentiful and cheap, and errrr....... It's this amazing 'Pride' attitude from most of the people who happen to have been born in a city which spawned the Beatles, and not much else really. A banging on and on and on about heritage and how funny all scousers are, and football, and so on. The population was double what it is now in the 1930's. and about 300,000 escaped between the 1960's and 2000 ish - and it was most likely the most well off, and least worrying (in a chav sort of way) who left. If you; don't like Football, are not just here for a 'Night Out', don't drink, don't like dogs (particularly staffies, Pit-bulls and the like), appreciate drivers indicating before turning, want a decent job done by a tradesman, don't appreciate something frightening from your locale being in the national news every day, don't want to be ridiculed for not being from Liverpool, don't like a general attitude of aggression and don't want to see hoards of teenage hoodies outside more or less every sweetshop. Then it isn't the place for you. Liverpool - The city of self-pity imo. |

An insightful and well written post by SF, and not one mention of 'thieving b@stards'.

Why do Liverpool have scousers and Blackpool have Donkeys???
Blackpool had first choice !!! |

Worked there for 4 years and its a poohole. Full of people as SF states, are full of self pity.

study form puts into words everything i wanted to say on this thread. cant agree with the transport thing though, roads round here were the afterthought of a 5yo. also radio sh!tty, its god awful djs and its utter trash of a playlist is a shocking omission.

big game player u have been there then? its one of the best places in the uk for nights out, bars, cafes etc...id imagine many people who criticise have never visited the place, much much nicer than for eg manchester, and im not just saying that cos of the rivalry, as id say londons a great place too when i visited.
Its like anything else ...its called believing the stereotype. And every city/town has the same deadbeats spoiling it for everyone else, they just dont get the same publicity. |
|
By:
It is nowhere near as cosmoplitan as most other cities in the UK, and not as welcoming.
Not as welcoming? It must be you sending out the 'don't talk to me' vibes. Liverpool is without doubt the friendliest city in the country. I have worked in most major towns/cities in the UK and nowhere comes close. Before anyone says 'thieves/scallies' etc. yes there are but there are allover. No I'm not a scouser. |
|
By:
I know a few scousers, one's called chippy, cost he is, very. And yes, as with other somewhat downtrodden areas, there's something of a victim mentality which can act as a very negative factor - the same is true here in Stoke, although to a lesser extent. Two points though, it can also be a plus, unifying people through a shared experience, and stereotyping people adds to the problem - the other scousers I know are just regular people.
|
|
By:
I must add, my cousin (from Nottingham) lived there and absolutedly loved it. But 2 negatives, and only 2. And I don't think they are reprasentative of the city...
His mate lent him 2 Liverpool Season tickets and took his black girlfriend. The bloke next to her acted like he was sitting next to Sir Alex Ferguson! He got chatting to a bloke in a bar and he was fine until my cousin told him he was a Forest fan. He started ranting about the miners strike and called him a scab! |

Liverpool is a great place. Like all big towns and cities, it has its problems - but the nightlife's good and the locals don't have the arrogance of your average Manc.
It always makes me laugh when away fans at Goodison start**gíng off Scousers and Liverpool as a city. I could take it from Barcelona and Fiorentina fans - but Stoke, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, West Ham and Portsmouth supporters?! |

Well,Studyform is right about Liverpool not being like anywhere else in the country.
He's wrong about a few things though. The run-down areas of Liverpool are no worse and no more prevalent than many other cities. The 300,000 that left in the 60's and 70's weren't the well-off. They were the poorwho moved from the terraced slums that were being pulled down to Runcorn,Skelmersdale and Runcorn as well as other various towns within 20 miles of Liverpool. Liverpool's sense of humour is different to other places, that is a fact. They would laugh at this kind of thread and not get remotely offended. |

About five years back I went on holiday to Cyprus, with a one-day cruise trip to Egypt for the pyramids thrown in. We had what must have been a 3-hour drive from Port Said to Cairo on a coach, which was bad enough given the state of the coach and the humidity. It got worse then when we had a family of about nine Scousers sat around us. All they did was bicker with each other for the entire journey, in a horrible dragging tone of voice.
But, the Easter after that I went out in Liverpool for a big night out, and found them all to be jovial sorts. So I've deduced that a sober Scouser is a bad thing, but a drunk one is a cracker. ;) |

Liverpool is a dump.
Can't think of any scousers who I've met who I didn't like though. Actually there was one. I was seeing this girl at uni and the girl in the next door room was a scouser who couldn't be arsed to walk to the bogs and used to p*ss in her sink. It wouldn't really have mattered if the smell didn't come through the drains to the girl I was seeing's sink. |

I've been a few times and although no big lover of things 'Lanc' i thought the city centre was the cleanest and well kept of any city in England...not one bit of litter.
People were friendly in the pubs, etc. As for the scrubber bits...every town/city has them.Anyway...if you re visiting why feel the need to see the bad bits? |

A lot of holes in that tale History Maker.
I think you probably twisted and tweaked a story you once heard to suit your prejudice. |
|

I'm from Liverpool and while it has it's good points the thing that really disappoints me about the place is the general lack of respect that lots of scousers show to others. Intelligent, polite scousers are amongst the best people you'll ever meet, but there are too many young**bags with shaved heads, status dogs and bad attitudes. Architecturally though it's a lovely city.
|
|
By:
Are people not allowed to hate scousers now? Why do you care?
|
|
By:
I think one thing is clear.
Liverpool is a place of extremes. It's very good and it's very bad, people love it and people hate it. |
|
By:
Great, thanks, records updated.

No problem Ken.
You could have found out enough to form a cogent opinion yourself had you visited the city. |
|
By:
Did I say I hadn't?
|
|
By:
No you didn't Ken.
I would have thought that if you had been you would have told us of your visit and how terrible it was. As you didn't I assume you've never been. |
|

Did I say it was terrible? I'm getting confused now...

They do take offence, at everything. |

Study, they don't, not at everything, just being**ged off by people who've never been there.

Never had a problem with Scousers, have got a few long term mates from there and although I only see them once or twice a year we just carry on where we left off, good people. I agree with whoever said the Welsh were the most unfriendly.

there is a distinct bias against them in tv progs
We go to Heartbeat middle of the Yorkshire Moors every time there is a burglary , or similar , the perpetrators have scouse accents ...99.999% of scousers have NEVER been to the Yorks moors ... Holby City + Casiualty , set around Leeds ...never a Yorkshire lout in ED , no Liverpool accent a must ... It goes on + on , stereo typing by the BBC mostly ... now you know it , you will start to see the point as you next watch a tv drama or + soap ,etc .... |

You must be offending them if they take offence. You're not one of those that constantly tell the locals that it's better were you came from are you? |
