I appreciate what Hobbs says but JP is not going to bypass the Champion Chase with a horse that has won the key 2 mile races in England this season. No chance in my book.
The Ryanair could be a real test if Frodon goes flat out (won Cotswold last year) so DDS not certain to stay if that occurred. Risks both ways perhaps but surely will go with 2 miles. |
|
By:
To me its a simple case of what Hobbs is saying.
After Saturday they will decide if they think they can win the race. Then make the decision. |

any news from wpm on cilaos emery after sundays fall ? out to a decent price and likely to drift but after departing at the 1st inconclusive . chacon looks to be the stables no.1 but if ce is none the worse he is still of interest to me and a decent price no need for me to go in again yet but will monitor the situ.

Was hoping for news too. I would be surprised if there was any issue. Just landed too steep and was caught immediately. The horse is a little fragile I think and recognising what a proper race it turned out to be I would have been worried the race would have left its mark had he traded blows. Happening at fence one a number of weeks before the festival and the absence of a gruelling race were mitigating factors that convinced me to top up my bet at the 14s offered by PP

CE hit every fence on his run before leopardstown so will surely do the same again if he turns up.
Big engine though! |

Yep got a jumping lesson from ballyoisin then proceeded to sluice up. I am always very wary of backing horses based on their ability to jump because you know that unless they jump well when you back them they are unlikely to win. Perversely I am very keen on the angle of inconsistent jumpers that are sure to go very close if they jump well. So what price would you have CE if you knew in advance he was going to jump well in the CC. For me much shorter than he currently is. This makes it a bet for me on my balance of risk and reward.
A perfect example for me of the opposite is Fakir doudairies at least his first two chases. His ability to jump well got baked into his price and therefore jumping perfectly became a must do and just one mistake meant he no longer represented value. Where is the potential upside if he is already jumping perfectly. |
|
By:
bit of an unknown quantity, won his 3 other chases
and was around 4/1 at the weekend, shame he never got around. |
|
By:
Another way of looking at this. Imagine you are one of the jockeys on one of the big three. U are at the start of the race and you start thinking about scenarios that worry you. I think close to top of the list is I am worried about CE if he jumps well. In fact I am maybe thinking you know what if this fella jumps well I could be in a lot of trouble. When that kind of horse is 14-1 I will always back it.

Interesting points MS
I was actually saying to someone last week that this could be the new Kemboy (all be it over a different trip). Kemboy obviously also struggled with his jumping, hitting to many fences, before getting things together for the same yard. I must admit I used to all about finding value in a race, however nowadays prefer to rule out more of the outsiders in the top class races, which has been working well. I would be more forgiving in a handicap chase though as many more negatives can normally be found, along with the odd plot. |

Most horses unless they have loads in hand need to jump pretty well to win a top race. I agree in that I will quickly eliminate a lot of horses that irrespective of how they jump I don’t think can win however I think many punters look at how a horse has jumped historically and assume that is how it will jump in the next race and yet there are countless examples of horses that jumped well in its last few races that make mistakes nto and there are countless examples of horses that made mistakes the last couple of races that then go on to put in an impeccable round of jumping.
I take the view that how a horse jumps nto is harder to predict than we think and therefore take a step back and focus first and foremost on the ability of the horse and its price. I find that occasionally this throws up horses that have a lot more talent than the price would suggest. I then ask myself is there a case to be made for the horses jumping to be better nto than previously. Novices in particular can suddenly click with their jumping so I am more likely to take the risk with a novice. Horses that I have read have had intensive schooling, been to henriettas etc. Horses that are with yards that have a proven track record of improving a horses jumping. So I treat jumping as much more of a variable that can be better or worse nto than a constant and I tend to find that the price of good jumpers is such that jumping well nto is already hard wired and baked into the price. Therefore there is only neutral or a down side. |

At what point do you class a horse as an outsider? By that i mean, you can have a fancied horse on the day that earlier in the season was an outsider. For me,i am always looking early in the season at nice prices for horses that i think will be a lot shorter on the day. Of course that way you end up with non runners and horses running in different races, but you also can end up with some nice looking value on the day. |

On another thread there is discussion about Asterion Forlonge. Imo it is already baked into his price that his jumping WILL IMPROVE. This doesn’t happen all that often but when it does then I’m out.

agree with a lot of what miltons says about jumping and price for example and we have to go back a good few years for this one . tuichev ran at sandown iirc before cheltenham and whacked a fence just the one bad mistake and a lot of media//punters tipsters said the same thing ie "if tuichev jumps like that at the festival he wont be winning anything . his price drifted and a lot of talk was about his bad jumping .i came to the thought if you ignore that mistake in the main he jumps well and a trouble free round he has a great chance ,he did jump well and duly won but that one mistake saw him written off by many who could not back him down to that error .

Yep happens all the time. There is a novice hurdler that I backed at 380 odd on here despite it having some of the best bumper form last year. The reason for the huge price is it hadn’t jumped well in its novice hurdle races so far. I haven’t seen the race but the post race comments suggest it’s jumping was vastly improved and it won impressively. Mcfabulous. I am not saying he will win the Ballymore but 380 assumed his jumping would always be rubbish.

asterion is no value now at the price for the supreme but he was before sundays race which what we all try to find i.e something at a bigger price who has could be a lot better and shorter on the day ,kicking myself as i got the race target wrong and had a smaller bet for the supreme as i thought the ballymore was the target ,trying to 2nd guess wpm is not easy . as for af jumping right he may do that at chelt and if he does it will obv be a negative we will see but it may be a lack of exp and as i said a fewdo seem to go slightly right for some reason at leopards .

Good luck Foyles and I hope for your sake his jumping straightens up which it could well do.

All good points, some horses can be ruled out on betting trends alone for me. Such as The Arkle where classy horses tend to win (besides Western Warhorse).
Last year was a very weak race, so not one where I would of trusted trends as much. CE having a weakness for jumping can indeed be improved by a good trainer, but I would still want to see it do it in similar conditions where jumping is at its most important at a faster pace, before putting my hard earned down. After that fall, i would imagine they will also make sure it has clear sight of all fences, meaning they are going to give away a good few lengths by riding out wider to do so. Mcfabulous was crying out for that step up in trip yesterday, and will still improve for a further step up on pedigree. It still looks awkward jumping a hurdle, but will no doubt improve next season when sent chasing. |
|
By:
The thing is if you wait for proof you no longer have value and everyone sees what you see. The best punting tip I ever heard was take a look at what everybody else does and then do the opposite. It wasn’t meant to be taken completely literally but was directional. So in this case the majority are giving CE a wide berth because everybody knows about his jumping and before you know it an opinion becomes an indisputable fact. I try and sniff out these occasions as very often that is where true value can be found.
Maybe a compromise might work for you ..... perhaps hover over him in running One thing I know. People on one of the front three will have one eye on their own horse and one eye on how this fella is jumping. If he is jumping well there could be a lot of people getting that sinking feeling. Re Mcfab...... I agree he was always going to improve for a step up in trip everybody knew this but it didn’t stop him being 380 and now you are telling me there is even more potential upside as his jumping can still improve. So bumper form illustrates the ability. Massive improvement for a step up in trip, another chunk of improvement for jumping better and suddenly 380 looks bonkers and all I am saying is you have to play out these what if scenarios before they happen not after. listen of course I am not saying he will win the ballymore I don’t even have a clue if they will run him ....it’s just an example. |
|
By:
Yep, I can certainly see the points of view, and good luck with the eye watering 380!
And yes agree that doing the opposite is certainly a way of finding an edge or beating the those horrible overrounds the bookies can have. |
|
By:
what books were offering 380?
no 380 on it's graph on here. |
|
By:
What’s you point are you suggesting I am lying
|
|
By:
Apologies .... I was lying it was 280 and 290 and not 380. Thanks for checking up on me and keeping me honest. Obviously The post is fundamentally different now everybody knows it was 280 not 380.

I believe Altior will retain his crown come March 2020. His electric acceleration past horses at the business end is impressive.; 3rd Champion Chase title well within his grasp.

I’m not really sure what to make of Altior today. If that was Defi running that race today I’m sure he would have drifted against Altior and CPS...form not good enough.....needs to improve to figure in March.
Altior is definitely on the down grade now but still around the 170 mark which puts all three about the same mark. I’m going with Defi though as he’s the younger horse and has best form this year. |
|
By:
Yeah i agree. Think Defi will travel better and have the legs of Altior.
|
|
By:
just think defi being held up until after the last will make it more difficult for him to hold off altior but i still have doubts he will run in the race unless its pretty soft
|
|
By:
Altior had that kick at the end and scooted away nicely, I've always thought that as good as he is though he deffo has operated in a weak period for the division, he hasn't had the opposition against him to put him under maximum pressure at the vulnerable part of the race for him.
He's going to be up against probably the best field, certainly depth wise at least he has faced, and he's probably not getting any quicker. The crucial factor in this race for me is Chacun Pour Soi's jumping because he is an absolutely brilliant jumper and the best in the field, I think he might just be able to get Altior at it as he's a powerful traveller allied to his jumping and do what Douvan was threatening to do before his fall a few years back. I'm worried about whether Defi's jumping over 2 miles at pace will hold up, but if it does he has that kick at the end that could win the day. It's a tough one for Altior because he has two big rivals with two separate skill sets that could both do for him, a strong jumper/traveller that could get him at it past his breaking point and the first horse he's faced with the pounce factor just like he has if CPS falls in a hole. I wouldn't like to be dogmatic about it but I think that CPS might be able to break the other two with his jumping and the gallop he'll go. |
|
By:
Altior does what he does, thats him,Wins again by a similar margin as he normally does, with that powerful finish.Cheltenhams finish suits him so well.I have seen nothing this season that tells me their is a better 2 miler .
Think hes the one to beat again. Be interesting to see what DDS connections thought of that, with the option of the Ryanair. Alan King looked well pleased with his horse, big smile on his face, think he had him in much better form than last time out. Can see him placing again. . |
|
By:
thats what altior does now,he used to beat horses easily, the worry being he is beating the same horse(sceau royal) by a similar margin, that may be good enough and if they are all together at the last my money would be on altior but i think duffy sums the race up well in that the way chacun pour soi runs and jumps he could have them racing a long way out,if all three run i think it will be a race to watch and saviour than lump on
|
|
By:
Be interesting to see what DDS connections thought of that, with the option of the Ryanair. ???
There is now even less chance of DDS running in the Ryanair after Altiors performance. Before it was 90% likely now 99.99%. I’d expect that Hobbs will be extremely pleased seeing Altior only beating SR and DD only 3 lengths. I don’t think he could have won any further than that If you watch the race again. He’s flat out from 2 out. There’s not much between all A, DDS or CPS. The facts are the two younger horses form is superior this season...although A should improve for yesterday’s run. |
|
By:
Gazo
If you go back through his race record you will find a lot races won by around 3 lengths. Done it again yesterday. Yes,Duffy may be right,i just happen to think he wont be,or is that hope .None of us can be sure of the outcome, but its building up nicely, and with Altior proving hes still a horse at this level it can only be good for us and the race. The reigning champ against two up and coming ones, its what we want, cant wait!! I just hope connections of DDS choose to run in the race, cos Hobbs did say they would look at the picture after yesterdays race. |

They don’t need to Hibore has just taken Frank Berry’s job
|
|
By:
Really Hibore?
Altior ran how I thought he would. Like I say, thats him. He will come on for that as well,be spot on in March. |
|

Berry is also apparently considering Epatante Champion Hurdle as well after Honeysuckle’s win against Darver Star. He’s got some big decisions in the coming couple of weeks.
