Cheltenham had just one and a half millimetres of rain overnight on Wednesday into Thursday and the going remains soft, good to soft in places on all three courses, but significant rainfall is on the way and heavy could feature in the going description by Sunday.
The forecast for Thursday is for just the odd light shower, but the end of the week is still expected to be much wetter before the weather improves again at the start of next week. |

CCM the going stick reading does not increase nearly a whole point even for a dry sunny & breezy day 10-11c in march
and for that amount of "drying" I would expect an official going change yet we have been told its soft, g/s in places ever since the snow melted?? 5.5 is consistent with a heavy ground reading, 6.4 is g/s side of soft ground...at least its consistent now and you cant answer PFs point about how did the g/s parts in the middle of the x-country track turn soft on a dry day?? it is a hotchpotch of inconsistent information being given out and I think irish is right its to keep all interested parties on side oh its good to soft, good in places and soft in other places  |

Speaking on Thursday morning, clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: "It stayed dry on Wednesday and then we had just one and a half millimetres overnight, so I'm leaving the going as it was, and the same on the Old, New and Cross Country courses.
"We might get a light shower today and then rain is coming tomorrow and Saturday which could amount to around 14 millimetres in total by Sunday. If that's the case we may go soft, heavy in places for a bit, but then Monday and Tuesday are looking pretty dry." based on that soft looks a fair price at evens |

could be geoff but the big event is the rain fri/sat
for a g/s start realistically they need that rain to be a few mm and soft g/s places on sun (can happen) |

so 3 days of good dry weather and the ground has got no better and according to the going map has actually got worse in some key areas
 if this is true and they get serious rain this weekend it'll be heavy ground, everyone keeps saying how well the track drains well it's done sweet f all for 3 days of good weather now |

They don't like to give heavy in the description. Be amazed if it's anything other than soft. It's soft now and constant but not heavy rain forecast until Thursday when the heavens open. May be soft for first couple of days and heavy Thurs/Fri. GC could be a real war of attrition.

going stick down to 6.1 from 6.4 this 14mm that is f/c on fri/sat will guarantee that the meeting starts on soft ground if it lands |

10/11 soft 6/4 g/s 9 heavy its almost as though people refuse to accept it will likely be soft I think we've moved beyond the stage of oh its too far out, it might be soft but it probably won't be |

Well it has shown the course is not drying out as it should have gone to Good to Soft with the weather the last 3 days and according to Simon nothing has changed.
And I am not talking about what the d1ck calls the going, I mean how it actually rides as I've no betting interest in the official going. |

IF you believe the going stick it was heavy after the snow melted and has dried out to soft now
g/s is high 6.x, towards good ground is low 7.x, so we are nowhere near that unlike in previous years the problem is how little rain it is taking to the turn place soft and I suspect he is covering his back on the ground given the f/c |

Anyone relying on Shaman Claisse's going stick readings as a reliable indicator of the going is barking up the wrong tree. They're currently bouncing around all over the place irrespective of sun, wind and rain.
Look back at readings of past meetings and you'll see that Claisse's interpretation of any particular reading can vary when it comes to his official going description. It's been said by others before but it's worth repeating, we'll only have an accurate guide to the true state of the going after the jockeys have ridden in the first race. At no other top race meeting would that be tolerated but Claisse is a law unto himself and it's the same every year (and at virtually every winter Cheltenham meeting). Between now and next Tuesday we'll just have to guess what the going might be based on the conflicting information already in our possession and the rain stats that are made available (and try our best to ignore the wheeling out of top trainers praising the track's condition and spouting on about what an amazing job Claisse has done under difficult circumstances). |

Could Claisse be making it up or someone actually accompanies him when he's prodding the ground with the stick?

Push the stick into the ground with a gentle touch and you can record a higher reading.

If you are not happy with his interpretation of the ground. Don't bet in the first race and then take a view after you get details of the race time.
This is obviously assuming that you have not had a bet on the going. If you have then what can I say. I certainly wouldn't if I was as concerned about the outcome as you. Alternatively, you could be from the Samcro camp which I doubt because you would have made your concerns vocal as you did with the Official Handicapper. Don't let it wind you up!! Good luck Forty |

Forty - Not sure if your post was in response to one of mine on this thread but I'll reply assuming it was.
I'm never happy with Claisse's interpretation of the ground before racing gets underway. Experience has taught me to take his going descriptions with a pinch of salt. This year I'm assuming it'll be soft (but I haven't had a bet on any of the going markets). Not entirely sure I understand the point you're making about Samcro so won't pass comment. |

it was 6.1 on thurs after the overnight rain (1.5mm)

talking about up to 17mm now from fri to mon, in 2 batches, first this afternoon through to early sat morning and second on sun night through to monday morning
cant be anything other than soft ground unless the course gets just a few mm today and misses the second batch altogether |

I've been moving money backwards and forwards been g/s and soft though, some advantageously and some not I'm sick of it now tbh just wish the bloody rain comes it goes soft at worst and then guaranteed a winner to kick off g/s an ok result for me |

I haven't taken a betting position on the state of the going but from a pure racing persective I'm hoping that Cheltenham will miss some of the forecast rain and we start the Festival week on going that is no worse than Soft, Good to Soft in places.
Whatever the weather, there'll be no need to water this year. |

In this day and age a stick is still being used manually to decide the official going. Why have they not used some device more sophisticated eg an electric or pneumatic pump/plunger - a consistent reading all the time.

Do CoCs base their going descriptions on the stick reading or do they make their judgement by walking the course and apply a heavy/light touch on the stick as necessary to corroborate their qualitative and subjective assessment?
It's good to see Turftrax being updated twice a day in the run up to Cheltenham but I gave up years ago trying to correlate Claisse's going stick readings with going descriptions. Let's hope for racing's sake the track misses most of the rain forecast between now and Tuesday. Nobody wants to see the hurdles track carved up in the Supreme. |

A builder will us a moisture meter to measure dampness of a material. Why can't a racecourse use a similar device to measure moisture right across the course ie the distance between the two rails? So informative, if so. It might also educate the jockeys in the process eg Moore, repeatedly coming up the wrong side of the track in Gp1 races.
