Oh no sir. The sweetest memory. My greatest day of racing bar none. One person jumping up and down out of a couple of thousand at the side of Tatts screaming Johnson home from the top of the hill. They must have thought I was barmy.

Camping Ground actually finished 1.25 lengths in front of Thistlecrack in last year's Imperial Cup giving him 15lbs - Thistlecrack has clearly improved since and Camping Ground will have to prove he stays but the Sandown race was on decent ground so can't see that being a problem - so, yes, he's a challenger, for me, though, Thistlecrack has a degree of star quality - Cleeve will tell us more.
Worth bearing in mind that CG has just turned 6 and Thistlecrack is 8 so former entitled to improve also. Pedigree would n't give you too much confidence that CG will stay 3 miles although 2.5 miles on bad ground obviously not a problem! |

^ just to be clear I think Camping Ground will be effective on better ground but not sure he'll stay 3 miles...

Interesting to hear Camping Ground has recently had a breathing operation...could be more improvement to come yet.

He has to be a live threat after that performance.
As a Cole Harden backer I was not too displeased with that today,hopefully he will peak in March and hopefully will get his ground then. |

I'd have to agree. Cole Harden will make them work in March which is the only race he's being primed for. I do feel Thislecrack is the one he's got to beat seeing as my original fancy Kilcooley seems to have fallen off the map. But 7/4 isn't Thsitlecrack. It's Smokingcrack.

EO - Kilcooley is very well according to Charlie Longsdon and goes for the Cleave Hurdle on trials day and all being well the World Hurdle will follow.

I was really impressed with Camping Ground the other day; he'd be my selection at this stage. Admitedly over a trip a lot shorter than the World Hurdle, but he smashed Cole Harden. Now I know people will point to the fact that Cole Harden will be trained for one day in March, but I was expecting an improvement from his Newbury run, but I thought he took a step back.
I put earlier in this thread that Whisper, Cole Harden, Martello Tower and Windsor Park were all big dangers, but based on all four of their recent runs, they need to improve a whole heap in the next couple of months to have any chance in a WH. Might be being harsh as the ground was against CH and Whisper, and it was Martello Tower's and Windsor Park's first run of the year, but it'd be a brave person to back either of them after the last couple of weeks. |

I Look at it totally different Chief as re Cole Harden.
None of his runs put me off,and all they have done is push his price out,that's good. He is being trained to peak in March,and after watching the WHurdle again the other day,if he's in that shape he's gonna be hard to beat,providing the ground is ok for him. All his runs so far this season have for me absolutely no bearing on him come March. |

Agree to a certain extent Budd, in that I would never expect a repeat of his World Hurdle run in mid season, but I have been expecting a higher level of performances than he has been putting in. He had a wind op mid season last year didn't he, so with his wind now sorted, I would still have liked him to have gotten nearer to CG, and shown some progress from his first run of the season.
Beginning to agree with Sonko in thinking that the WH from last year was not particularly strong. Looking through the list of runners I can only see two wins from the entire field this year - Un Temps Pour Tout in France and Seeyouatmidnight in a novice chase the other day. If they sort of Saphir's wind, like they did Cole Harden last year, I wouldn't rule him out, but I'm now struggling to see past the top two, and because of the difference in price, it has to be Camping Ground for me. |

Yes mate,it's possible this years horses are better than last years.
I'm just going for a horse that if he repeats his form of last March he's a nice price. If CG and Thistle are simply better horses I will have to take it on the chin mate. |

I couldn't see past Thistlecrack and Cole Harden until watchiung Camping Ground win on New Years day. I still think that Thistle would be 6/4 if trained by Mullins or Nicholls but he could drift again if another potential runner romps up in a trial.

Camping Ground, despite winning easily in its last race over 20f, can still be backed at 10/1 here; I see there could be doubts of its effectiveness over 24f and good going despite winning in g/soft ground here and France; Camping Ground finished 4th and ahead of Thistlecrack in the William Hill Imperial Cup Hurdle Handicap last year despite giving 15lb to the latter; Camping Ground is priced at 10/1 and Thistlecrack 2/1, bizarre I think.

You must also think Ebony Express is better than Thistlecrack too ? Clearly Thistlecrack was running over wrong the trip. I was impressed with CG, but i need to see him run over 3miles and better ground than soft.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ptit Zig turns up in this. His not a natural jumper of a fence and Nicholls doesn't tend to persevere with dodgy jumpers

THREE-TIME Grade 2 winning chaser Ptit Zig is likely to be switched to hurdles for his next start after failing to complete on his last two outings over fences. An unseat at the second-last in Saturday’s Listed chase at Kempton followed a similar jumping error when falling at the final flight in last month’s Peterborough Chase. In both contests Ptit Zig looked booked for second place but Paul Nicholls is set to press the pause button on the seven-year-old’s chase career, with the Cleeve Hurdle on January 30 under consideration. “It was disappointing to see Ptit Zig depart at the second last fence at Kempton and I'm afraid he has never been the most natural over fences,” the trainer said on his website. “He got away with it in small fields last season but despite loads of schooling at home he tends to get into the bottom of his fences when he doesn’t meet them spot on. It’s so frustrating as he has loads of talent. “While I will still give him an entry in the Ryanair Chase I plan to switch him back to hurdles next with the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham an obvious option.” Nicholls knows what it takes to win the Cleeve Hurdle as he has claimed three of the last seven runnings of the Grade 2. Gearing up for festival The trainer said Le Prezien, winner of the 2m½f novice hurdle at Doncaster on Friday, will receive an entry for next month’s Betfair Hurdle and he also gave an update on some of his more established stars. He said: “I’m pleased to say that Aux Ptits Soins and Saphir Du Rheu are both back cantering in the early stages of their preparation for the World Hurdle in March. “In addition Dodging Bullets has been in full work for a while after his problems with a splint. He’s on course to return in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury before defending his crown in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.” |

Paul Nicholls on ATR not sounding overly confident on Aux Ptits Soins making the World Hurdle. He says he'll have to rush him to get him ready in 8 weeks, and nominated the French Champion Hurdle as a target, before novice chasing next year.
Didn't say anything like he won't run, but he'd just like more time with him, as he's had two ops in the summer and he'd rather be a bit further forward with him. Saphir Du Rheu defintely going for this - he's had his wind done, and he'll improve a lot for better ground. Conti will get an entry, as he hasn't been entered in the Gold Cup. |

He nominates Saphir Du Rheu as his best chance of a winner at the festival at this stage - 20/1 NRNB with Boyles isn't bad. FWIW, I took that before his interview
 Also, Ptit Zig will run in the Cleeve, and then they'll decide whether to go for the WH |

I think he ended up tipping Ibis Du Rheu in the Koral Kup, actually chief. He said something about John Hales not being happy with him for giving that one - if he was watching in Barbados!

Just watched the interview back Delsie (it's on the ATR twitter feed too) and he definitely said SDR in the World Hurdle. Chapman then pushed him for a handicap one and he chose Politologue in the Coral Cup, who is a John Hales one. He came second to Barters Hill lto.
