Yes on the first one. Now if Vautour turns up i'd say there is a 75% chance Ruby rides him. Reason being that i can't see them running unless he is flying at home and the ground has "good" in the description. Would be very hard for Ruby to relinquish the ride if that was the case. Of course we could have a case where the ground goes against him after the Ryanair has run. Let's hope not this year.

BF Vautour 8/1 NRNB is a massive price. imo.

Well if a bookie priced up Vautour at 3 and Cue card at 8 then it's pretty much a no brainier which one to back.

I think the only way Walsh would choose Vautour over Djakadam is if he has proved he stays well enough.
How does ho do that??

Do not discount Vautour running in the Champion Chase yet: if so, a real dilemma for Ruby, Vautour or UDS? Whichever one Ruby chooses will no doubt be the 'fav' for the race.

I think Ruby will most likely choose Djakadam (a proven stayer) over Vautour should Vautour run in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Would not discount anything with this yard!!
However I would be really shocked if Vautour went back to 2 miles.
His connections have said all along he's a stayer, and campaigned him accordingly.
If they are not convinced enough with the trip to run him in the Gold Cup,then I would think the Ryanair is where he will turn up at the festival.
Going back to 2 miles after all they have been saying, plus the fact they have the short priced fav, would not make much sense for them.

Mind you, from a racing perspective,it would make the Queen Mother a more interesting race.
Well certainly the build up anyway.

I too would be shocked if they are considering the QMCC for Vautour. They ignored the more prestigious Arkle for the JLT last year and he won the JLT in imperious fashion. This would suggest they are not too concerned about prestige of races. Just winners at the Festival. Think Quevega and Annie Power in Mares. They would look rather silly if after winning JLT so easily at 2015 Festival and championing him as a Gold Cup horse they suddenly switched to the QMCC and he didn't win. I hope they stick to the GC plan and would understand if they switched to Ryanair if the going looks like being soft. I just can't see any way Vautour runs in the QMCC.

buddeliea,

Vautour and UDS are of different ownership; in my opinion the Champion Chase is a pretty hot race with seasoned jumpers, and UDS is still novicey; the Ryanair is less prestigious (perceptively), hence I'd like to think Vautour will be diverted to the Champion Chase instead nearer the time as I cannot see Ruby choosing Vautour over Djakadam with that daunting extra 2f uphill finish at Cheltenham.

im just saying re the yard, not the owner.

I don't think they are at all thinking about the Queen Mother for Vautour.
They see him as a stayer and that's where he's being campaigned.

Anything is possible and they make a complete turn around, but I very much doubt it.

Maelduin - BF Vautour 8/1 NRNB is a massive price. imo.

Thanks, Ive gone with that. Decided its a very 'backable' price rather than the 'smashable' 12/1 that has all the risk attached. As you say, trying to see Djakadam as a positive in that if Vautour runs then you can assume a certain degree of confidence in the yard.

I can understand the champion chase price 7/8s. Imo reflects a lack of opposition but also that its an unlikely target. Or maybe could be the other way around.

And Im sort of getting my head around the gold cup price 8/10s. Supreme Novice winner with 1 run over 3 miles doesnt scream gold cup winner. I personally dont think the books are necessarily THAT worried about the trip (considering the excellent king george run) but i might well be adding my own bias there.

The Ryanair price, 5/4, well, I just cant get my head around that at all. Considering its not his target they must think the opposition is weak as fk. Or that he is 100% going in the ryanair. I dont know. But NRNB means I dont have to care now Happy

The other consideration is that horses rarely win a Gold Cup having failed before. Like it or not, that is the case with Djakadam. I know he is that bit younger than the average GC horse, but as I say it is rare. I think it is still possible that Vautour will run and if he does Ruby will ride. Although he looked good in his reappearance surely Djakadam's price is skinny? Valseur Lido is no world beater after all. I would have thought that the Dons should both be ahead of him in the betting and I would rather take 12-1 Vautour than 3-1 Djakadam to be honest - certainly at this stage. That said, I fear that Djakadam's defeat last year might have left a scar on my reasoning!

The 5/4 for Vautour to win a race (Ryanair) that isn't his target is hard to get your head around alright. Mullins has stated that the GC remains his target which means he has > 50% chance of running there. Which means he will go off 4/6 or shorter if he lines up in the Ryanair. That's without factoring in any mishaps in the meantime. Anyone taking 5/4 is off their rocker.
By:

When: 03 Jan 16 00:35
8/1 on Vautour will definitely look like a big price on the day of the race if he runs, but that still doesn't alter the fact that he may not get home.  They might have to restrain him, but as an exuberant front runner, he might struggle to settle, wasting more energy and if he bowls along in front, he could be a sitting duck to a better stayer.

If he does run in the GC, they might have a headache deciding what tactics to employ.

I would not be at all surprised if Djakadam is a better horse this year, He's entitled to have improved and he did look very good in his last race smashing some useful horses over a trip short of his optimum.
Vautour will be going into the unknown in the Gold Cup as there is no way anyone will know if he stays or not before then.
Absolutely no sweat with Djakadam on that score, and I think that Ruby will ride him.
Ruby will also do his best to get Vautour in the Ryanair. He wants to ride both.
And let's face it Vautour in the Ryanair has the potential to post a very high mark.

Anyone taking prices for the Gold Cup should hope he's a NR in my view. Then use the money to back Djakadam.
And to be honest when/if Ruby chooses Djakadam, the price of Vautour could be bigger than it is now.

When: 03 Jan 16 10:26
I think Djakadam looked so good because of the shorter trip to be honest. Agree with Budd re Ruby wanting to keep them apart - and I think he does play a massive part in these decisions. However, if Vautour does run I can't see Ruby getting off him after all the things he said about the horse. He would just hate it if he had to listen to Townend telling us that they always thought  'this is a special horse' after he cruises round.
By:
buddeliea
When: 03 Jan 16 10:47
Yes,he does think Vautour is a special horse, but is that opinion re the Gold Cup?

Thing is he will do his best to avoid having to make a decision.
If he does have to do that,he won't like it either way if the other one wins.

He has said how special Vautour is,so as you say will hate to see someone else win the Gold Cup on him.
At the same time he knows Djakadam stays the Gold Cup trip, and equally he would hate it if someone else rode him to win,and he is on  Vautour struggling to get home not staying.

Also it seems a lot are presuming he prefers Vautour as a horse.
Maybe he likes them all equally, and will ride the horse he thinks has the best chance in a race......that's what he should do as a pro jockey.

I think the Kauto/Denman choice taught him a lot. He didn't make the same mistake when the Faugheen/Fly no-brainer came along.

If WPM can get Vautour in the same shape as he had him for the JLT last year, and the ground conditions are similar, then i honestly can't see Ruby riding anything else. He was literally speechless after that JLT win and you could sense he wanted to label him a superstar right there but held back. Vautour is one of those horses a jockey would always want to ride even with question marks around him. Anyhow the excuse for not choosing Djakadam is easy as he has already been beaten in a GC.

One thing's definite though and that's the GC market is going to be crazy volatile right up until the off. Mouthwatering stuff.

Does anyone else think that Djakadam may be ground dependent?  All of his best form appears to be on soft/heavy ground and unless there is rain during festival week (as there was last year), it may be too quick for him in my opinion.  Vautour on the other hand will clearly need it quick if he is to go the gold cup route.

I would also be slightly concerned as to whether Djakadam is rated by the stable in the same terms as Vautour.  It is easy to forget that he went off 14/1 for the JLT and Ruby deserted him for Felix Younger!  Ok, he was only 5 so perhaps they thought it was a year too early but they swerved taking UDS to cheltenham early in his career so they have form for looking after horses if they want to take their time.
By:
buddeliea
When: 03 Jan 16 13:46
I don't think there is anything easy about the decision if he has to make one.

At this stage and indeed come March if both run,he will have to decide between a horse he knows will stay and a horse he does not know will stay.
Not easy at all.
By:

When: 03 Jan 16 13:52
Having said that,The  point re the ground may be a valid one and could possibly make a decision a tad easier I guess.
Djakadam  does have a lot of form on soft ground and not much on decent ground, although I cannot recall connections saying he's ground dependant.
Anyway I guess we just have to wait and see.
By:

When: 03 Jan 16 17:12
Marvin - Good point on the ground. Looks like the Punchestown race was the closest he got to decent ground and he ran a cracker given his exploits in the GC.

Budd - The decision certainly won't be easy for Ruby but the excuse would come easy if he ditches Djakadam. On the other hand if he ditches Vautour it would be because of stamina doubts which the KG didn't conclusively prove yet.

As you say we'll just have to wait and see.

We have seen horses not just stay 3 miles but 3 miles 2 furlongs on other courses but even on good going they have failed to see out the Cheltenham hill. Years ago the great Pendil was a  brilliant King George winner but he got caught close home by the high class plodder that was the Dickler. One Man won a King George and a Hennessy but a good ish going Gold Cup was too much of a test of stamina.

The Gold Cup is of course a great race but it does not always produce the champion 3 miler. That's because its not a 3 mile race. It's a brutal stamina test run at a merciless gallop all the way and anything with stamina doubts gets found out.

With Vautour there is only limited evidence. He has run 13 times and lost just four times: 1st & 2nd ever runs in French bogs, once when pasted by Clarcam (found to be not right), and last time out.

Last time Vautour was allowed to go at his own natural pace, jumping past Silviniaco Conte at the 11th, still going best 4,3 and 2 out but running out of stamnina close home and getting caught by Cue Card who was not exactly quickening himself. Now anything is possible and maybe he can be made a deal fitter for Gold Cup day and that maybe would do the trick. However, the evidence of Kempton is that he would not reverse the form with Cue Card over the Gold Cup course and distance. If he did not get 3 miles even on soft to heavy going at Kempton, experience suggests he lacks Gold Cup stamina.

Vautour was a superb winner of the Supreme, making all a a quick pace before quickening away on the run in. He is not a plodder but a speed horse. In my view he is a natural for the Champion Chase.

Walsh will definitely ride Vautour IMO because if he chose Djak over him means that by definition he isn't as sold on his chances over the trip in the first place which in turn suggests that if that were the case Walsh would be fielding against him running in the GC.
By:

I'd like to see Vautour in the GC - better prices for his opponents - but I do not believe Ruby will ditch Djakadam in view of Vautour's head start and beating he received from Cue Card, another runner not certain to cherish an additional 2f and uphill finish.

Don Cossack for me, more so if Don Poli is ridden by Bryan Cooper.

Think you are spot on Duffy. They won't want to run Vautour if Ruby doesn't want to ride him imo. Exactly as you say, if Ruby doesn't want him in the GC, then why go for that race?
By:

When: 04 Jan 16 18:25
I think Ruby could be quite Machiavellian over this. He might think either Djakadam or Vautour could win it and genuinely not know which to pick if both are committed but if he says he'll pick Djakadam because Vautour needs another year that puts the gun to connections heads and I'd be pretty confident they'd then opt for the Ryanair with Ruby riding. Ruby emerges the winner either way then. He hasn't got off the winner of the Gold Cup and he just could emerge with both birds in his hand.

Exactly EO. That's how I've seen it all along tbh. And not only Ruby. RR and WPM could end up with both as well. That's what it will make it even easier for Ruby to talk them into that plan.

Is Djakadam ground-dependent ? Yes he is. Either Willie or Ruby or both stated that publicly at some point pre-Cheltenham last season. I can’t remember which of them or when exactly, but it is something I have carried around in my head for the last year or so, and I am surprised that it never seems to get a mention in any analysis. Is it not the case as well that the money came for Djakadam in last year’s Gold Cup when it became apparent that it was going to be soft ?
I think it was also plenty soft at Punchestown when he again finished in front of Road To Riches. I was a Road To Riches fan throughout last season and couldn’t believe his bad luck in not getting the decent ground he wanted at either Cheltenham or Punchestown.

Thing is re the ground,it's not likely to be proper good ground,as they will always water to try and get at least soft side of good.
If needs be they will water during the week.
I don't see any problem with Djakadam and the ground, like said before he ran ok on decent ground behind Don Cossack considering the hard race he had at Cheltenham. Yes,he has most of his form on soft, but that don't mean he can't act on better.
Would be interested in where you heard that quote re the going for him, must confess I have never heard anything.

If any of yous seen an interview with ruby when asked if he could ride the KG again would he do anything different you could see by the look in his face he knew he c0cked up big time on Vautour, he simply asked him to go and win the race far too early (4f from home) he said if he could ride it again he'd have got a breeder into Vautour 4 out and ask him to go about his business 1 out, the horse was knackered because basically he didn't get a breeder into him the whole way around Kempton, the gun was put to his head far too early, run the KG again and he'd beat CC as he likes,
When ridden in the right way this fella will stay 3m plus on his head.

Agree with this. Also think with Coneygree out, horses not necessarily proved over the GC trip i.e. Vautour & Cue Card have a better chance of staying as there won't be a relentless gallop. Id also argue a lack of Coneygree doesn't do many favours for Don Poli in looking to 'out stay' the field, who you'd think could be shagge'd after a Coneygree gallop for 3 miles+. With the way Vautour has run at the festival and the way Ruby & Willie talk about him, I personally find it very hard to see Ruby onboard Djakadam if they both lined up.

Has there been any mention on where Vroum Vroum Mag is going? She could be Ricci's Ryan Air horse with the weight allowance then Ricci gets 2 stabs at the Gold Cup.....Just thinking aloud more than anything
