Think The Fellow's run may have been his 4th, not his 3rd. That was bl00dy unusual though and the point remains that not many win the Gold Cup at the 3rd attempt.
If SC fails this year and comes back again we're into Beef or Salmon territory! |

CONEYGREE looks increasingly likely to take his chance in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup rather than revert to novice company in the RSA Chase, although a final decision will be left as late as possible.
The eight-year-old put up a terrific front-running display when making it three wins from as many starts over fences in Saturday’s Betfair Denman Chase at Newbury, and connections are starting to wonder if this year’s open-looking Gold Cup might even be the easier option. Sara Bradstock, wife of trainer Mark, said on Sunday: "He’s incredible, but it’s nerve-wracking. He’s not a Gold Cup horse at home, where he’s become quite idle, so every time he runs and steps it up again it’s another bonus. "Before Saturday the needle was pointing very much towards the RSA, but after winning like that it’s much closer to the middle. In fairness he’s won enough prize-money now for us to go to the line before choosing so that we can take everything into consideration. "We’re not greedy and we’d be happy to win the RSA, but with Silviniaco Conti such a strong favourite despite being beaten last year the Gold Cup is tempting. It might even be the easier race." Bradstock reported Coneygree "very fresh", which suggests he did not take too much out of himself. She added he has earned a break now, albeit a short one. She said: "We’ll wrap him in cotton wool and he’ll have an easy time now, but he wouldn’t take more than a week of that without exploding. We’ll then build him up again for Cheltenham, but it’s all about keeping a lid on him. "Any injuries he’s had aren’t training injuries. They’re through being such an idiot. He’s a thug, but a likeable one. Mark has now taken to wearing three coats when he goes into his box as he bites so much. He’s given up trying to stop him and just wears protective armour now!" While the Bradstocks were delighted with the ride Coneygree was given by substitute jockey Richard Johnson, there is no question of the suspended Nico de Boinville losing the mount. Bradstock added: “We feel very sorry for Nico, who had a whip ban. In some stables it might have cost him the ride in future, but we’re not going to jock him off.” |

The Fellow lost two Gold Cups by a short head which is exactly what hasn't happened to SC.

 ..unless you're a previous champ its very much 1st time or bust(Unless youve a valid excuse)See More Business was the last one..he did have a valid one having been carried out the year before, as mentioned the Fellow did..then you have to go back to Bregawn and Silver Buck |

Coneygree been given an OR 166. At first thought I thought a tad low. Obviously rated through Unioniste? Can't say I thought HDO ran below form.

it would be better to give him a chance of winning a festival race with a high probability of success in the RSA against novices than going against much tougher opponents in the Gold cup; could later win 3-4 gold cups there are no stats against 9-10-11yo's. If they do decide GC then I assume they'll be aware that there's no glory or alot of money for coming home in 4-5th or worse. There's absolutely no need to rush into such an experienced and high class field as that sometimes has the opposite effect on horses and he could never recover from it.

I'd win more on him in the Gold Cup than the RSA, but I'd still go down the RSA route personally - there's a reason why novices are all kept together.
It'd be different if he got a weight allowance, but off levels against seasoned 3m chasers, I wouldn't risk him (especially if the ground is quick). I get the idea of small stable, small owners etc so the Gold Cup could be too big a prize to turn down, but if he was mine I'd handle him with kid gloves - go for the RSA this year, and then have one shot at the Gold Cup when he'd be a 9yo, when he will have had a whole season of gaining experience of mixing it with the big boys. |

I think Pipe would want him in the Gold Cup.
Kings Palace gonna struggle if hes in the RSA imo. Really think the RSA is his race to lose,the Gold cup I just cannot see him being a major threat at all. |

I'd definitely go Gold Cup.
Many Clouds beat Houblon 3L receiving 6lbs Coneygree beat Houblon 7L receiving 1lbs. He is 8 years old, perfect age to have a go. Strike whilst the iron is hot I say. |

But there are a lot more horses than MC and HDO in the Gold Cup. Good chance of an RSA winner or smaller chance of a Gold Cup winner?? Decisions decisions. |

I think we're missing the real issue with the horse, namely the ground, it's already starting to feel like spring, a good week or two earlier than last year, come Friday that ground is going to be on the quick side and they will not run him on that, even Johnson voiced his concerns re: the ground after the race.

love the horse.....but just outta curiosity,how come mattie didnt get the ride last sat,has he retired,i know he not everyones perfect jockey but he has won some goog races on carruthers,king harold and coneygree !!i aint changing subject ,just wondering,thats all.

wouldnt dispute that ,but nico was banned last sat,obviousely dickie was available,and you would always want the best but bradstock had been using mattie for a long time and i just wondered was he retired as he doesnt seem to ride much anymore.

Great performance and a great decision to go for gold. May not have beaten Don Poli on good ground but conditions turned in his favour overnight and to win a gold cup from the front with immaculate jumping takes some doing.

Well done to anyone who followed this horse from the start ... amazing performance. I thought he'd run well but never considered him as a potential winner.
Looking ahead do people think he can dominate the staying division for another year or so .... style of racing would suggest he's going to be hard on himself? |

While I'm gutted that Conti couldn't do, this fella winning more than makes up for it. Also owe Djakadam an apology - he ran a blinder, as did Road to Riches. Also, Holywell on unfavoured ground ran well better than I imagined he would.
That was a proper Gold Cup - no hard luck stories, with the best 4 pulling well clear of the rest. All young horses, with Vautour and Don Poli, what a race we could have with 2 Giggi and 2 Ricci ones right at the top. |
